Gregory writes very well, and I enjoyed most aspects of her treatment of Margaret Beaufort. Still, the one overarching theme throughout the book is Margaret's overweening ambition coupled to her complete lack of self-awareness. If only we hadn't known this about her from the first pages, it would have kept me more engaged. Instead, there is never any doubt that Margaret sees herself as a perfect candidate for, if not sainthood, then for every honor that one human being can receive. She constantly wonders why others, so much less deserving than herself, keep receiving the things which she sees hers. Why are these things rightfully hers? Why, because she is God's most devout and devoted servant. Ergo, she alone deserves riches, respect and to be honored by others. All of her introspection, if such it can be called, is directed towards asking god to redress her endless grievances. This gets tiresome, hitting us as it does from the very first page. We get it, Margaret feels entitled.Still, her endless and mostly fruitless plots and schemes make an entertaining read, especially within the context of The White Queen, which should definitely be read before this volume. Her last two marriages are also well-explored by the author, and her feelings towards and interactions with first the cautious but honorable Henry Stafford and cautious but scheming Thomas Stanley were enough to keep me reading. Ultimately, and despite the protagonist's lack of introspection, I found it an enjoyable read.

The Red Queen is the a biography of a bad guy, and it's AWESOME!!Margaret Beaufort is this notorious/ infamous brutal & cold hearted women of English History, but how does someone get that way? Philippa Gregory lays down the foundation of how this woman came to be in this book, and who also becomes a prominent figure in multiple books after.As an influential figure in The Cousins War, she's never been one of my favorites; but I love this book for leveling me with who Margaret Beaufort is as a person and showing me why she is who she is. Philippa Gregory told the story of Margaret Beaufort in a way that evoked some emotions in me- she made me laugh, she made sad, she made me think, she humbled me, and she frustrated the heck out of me...and I loved every second!

This was a very interesting read. Lady Margaret is not a sympathetic character in my mind. It is true that women in this time period were ​little more than chattel, but she doesn't seem to know it. She doesn't appreciate her second husband, the only one who cares for her. When her third husband calls her out for her ambission, she is shocked. Her faith is not in God, but in her own greed and jealousy of the Yorks. It was fascinating to see how far she would go to put herself in a position of royalty. I didn't like her character, but I enjoyed filling in the history, even if it was fictional.

A bit easier for me to read than the first, The White Queen. The plot wasn’t as filled with conflict. And thank goodness for that! I had to put the first down to take a bit of a breather but this one I flew through!I was on the fence about this Queen, however. At first I was thinking I would like her more than Queen Elizabeth but as the story moved forward I became more confused with her motivation. Well, not her motivation, because that was always to put her son on the throne. But to the God aspect of her motivation. I feel like later on she was blaming everyone except herself for all the horrors in the world and she really should have been looking in the mirror instead of casting stones. She believed so fervently that God was backing her and her family that she would literally do anything that made that so!Even with that though, I really enjoyed how this one ended. There were questions that I had about the ending of the first and this one filled those in. There are still questions of course but I feel as if the next book in line, which is about The White Queen’s mother, does not sound as interesting to me as The White Princess which is #5 in this series! I just can’t wait that long!!

It's a rare story that gets told in the first person when that person is unlikeable and completely lacking in self-awareness. Lady Margaret sees herself in the mold of Joan of Arc, while we see her as unpleasant, wildly ambitious (for her son) and constantly scheming. That could make for an interesting contrast if the dichotomy between thought and action was slowly unveiled, but we're looking down our noses at Lady M in the first few pages after she announces she has "saints' knees".We learn little of her son, who is offstage for almost the entire book. Consequently when he does become king (I'm not giving anything away -- it's history!) there's no sense of joy or triumph. It's just another machination in a book that's full of 'em.So why four stars? Gregory writes extremely well. Two of Margaret's three husbands are fairly interesting. The endless plotting has its fascinations. And you get a good sense of what life was like for aspirants to the throne in the England of Richard III.

About the Author

Nadia Chugal, MPH, DDS, MS, is Clinical Professor at the University of California, Section of Endodontics, Los Angeles, where she is Program Director of the Postdoctoral Endodontic Program. Dr. Chugal is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics. She gained her MPH, DDS, and MS from University of California Los Angeles School of Dentistry in 1984, 1988 and 1990, respectively, and completed the endodontic residency at the University of Connecticut.. She joined the UCLA’s Section of Endodontics in 1997 as faculty and has also worked in private practice, limited to endodontics, since that year. Dr. Chugal has been a member of various national committees, including, currently, the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations and the Commission on Dental Accreditation, and is a past president of the Southern California Academy of Endodontics. She serves on the advisory board of the Journal of Endodontics and acts as a reviewer for several leading journals in the field of endodontics. The main focus of Dr. Chugal’s research has been endodontic prognosis and she is the author of award-winning articles on this subject. Her current research includes the study of new imaging technologies for endodontic diagnosis and treatment planning with the aim of developing more effective therapies and improving prognosis, as well as a translational study that deals with novel approaches in studying microbiology of the infected root canals. Louis M. Lin, BDS, PhD, DMD, is Professor in the Department of Endodontics at New York University College of Dentistry, having previously held chairs at the School of Dentistry, University of California, Los Angeles (2000-2002) and the Department of Endodontics, UMDNJ – New Jersey Dental School (1989-2000). Dr. Lin is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics. He gained his BDS from the School of Dentistry, Chung Shan Medical University in 1964, his DMD from New Jersey Medical School in 1976 and his PhD in Pathology from University of Oklahoma Medical Center in 1972. Dr. Lin completed specialty training in Oral Surgery at National Tokyo University Hospital, Tokyo, Japan, Oral Pathology at Louisiana State University Medical Center, and Endodontics at the School of Dental Medicine, University Connecticut Health Center. He also engaged in private practice before joining UMDNJ – New Jersey Dental School in 1983. Dr. Lin has won various awards, including the Modern Chinese Outstanding Achievement Award, and has been listed in Outstanding Dentists in America and Who’s Who in Frontier Science and Technology. He is a member of the editorial board of several journals, including the Journal of Endodontics and the International Journal of Dentistry, and he has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals.

It's pretty headdy, possibly his Ph.D dissertation, reformatted for sale to the public. He's quite a sharp thinker.

I like things well explained. But here I have found the mentioned "understanding of creativity" to be buried so deep under layers of information and theoretical discussion that I gave up pretty early on. Not my type of reading. Very cerebral. With lots of references to ideas and people I, as a musician and creator, have no clue about and have no particular interest in.I started reading Uncharted. I tried again, and again then I packed the book and returned it to Amazon.But before I parted with it I was able to appreciate Bill's eloquent command of the written language. Nicely written.Three stars because Bill must have had fun doing his PhD and he deserves it.

This is basically like reading a college thesis. If as a drummer or musician you're not going to get a lot of insight into the creativity process unless you can relate to psychological jargon and studies etc. Not a lot of discussion with the drummers on their thoughts - this is only about 10% of the book. SO it's a very ok book - not an easy read unless again your into psychological studies.

My husband is happy with this book!

I loved the story, but wanted more! lol And as much as I loved Hyde from the previous book, I wanted to smack him for interfering in this one (his intentions are good).The backstory with what happened to Sariah was a bit choppy, with the twist at the end seeming kind of random, IMO. But the overall message that we all have scars — whether visible or not — was beautiful.Well written and paced, clean romance.

Mack is physically a giant size man with a gentle heart. His love for Sariah does get tested because of her fears and insecurities. A beautiful slow, moving love story. I love it.

Mack and Sariah are both so gentle and without guile that they melt my heart. I love reading about characters I am first introduced to in other books. I have read the stories about two of Mack’s brothers and a story about Sariah’s sister, Lily. These other characters are very protective of Mack and Sariah because of their gentle natures. While this book stands alone quite well, I was entertained watching these other characters pop up. I loved the theme of learning to accept ourselves despite our imperfections. I think most of us have parts of ourselves that we would like to hide from the world. This story explores how love and relationships can strengthen or destroy our feeling of self-worth. I love cheering these characters on and laughing out loud at some of the family interactions. Can’t wait to read about more friends and family members!!!

The Gentle Patriot has a powerful message to not let our looks define us. We all have scars. Some are simply more visible than others. Some are not physical. Our experiences and the scars we receive from them build our character.Mack is so patient, gentle, and loving. Who wouldn’t fall in love with him? Sariah is real and vulnerable, a perfect heroine. Add a quick moving, little bit suspenseful story, and you certainly have a winner! I love this book.

This i.d rhe first book I've read written by rhis author but I promise it won't be the last. Thw storyline was well-developed and interesting and the characters were extremely easy to relate to. I quickly lost myself in the pages of this extremely satisfying romance and can promise you I'll be looking for more by this author in the future.

Cami, thank you, thank you thank you! I love these characters. I love the way the love and the suspense weave through their lives so naturally that they stuck me into the story until I forget to breathe. The insecurities and self doubt are just enough to be real without being annoying. The supporting characters make or break a story and yours are perfect! Thank you for bringing back Josh and Theresa and Griff! I can hardly wait until May 7th for the next book!

What a joy it was to read this book. I laughed and cried my way through it. The lesson taught in this book would be something to behold if everyone would actually accept people for who they are, flaws and all and not for what we think they should be.

The romance is alive. I love the football books! They are always fun and sassy. This books is wondrous, funny and down right family good. You are part time of the family and fall in love with the characters and their uniqueness. Love this book. It has my heart working through every single word!
