Kate’s mate, the Prime Leader of Luxiria, is a very honorable, caring mate to her. Vaxa’s planet had experienced a war-time virus that made their surviving women infertile, so bringing in mates from other worlds could be very important to his people. Vaxa had fought in battle for her and took her back to his world. Kate was now pregnant and no one was sure how difficult this would be for her as an Earthling. Her pregnancy would only last 3 months and they were being extra careful with her. Vaxa told her he had yet another Council meeting and could not pick her up at the end of the day. But Kate felt that Vaxa had seemed worried about something else and would not confide in her.Kate kept busy at her work in the Archives. Bruxilia was teaching her to read their language. But the two women were talking about the unrest lately. Bruxilia told her that some of her people were not happy with their leader choosing an alien mate. Kate did not realize the extent of the danger, but at that moment, they were interrupted and the discussion ended. Would the birth of her child have any impact on the attitudes of those who were against any otherworldly matings? Would Vaxa survive the upcoming Trials -- a battle to the death against the hostile males who challenged his mating – a secret which Vaxa had not confided to Kate? This was another excellent story from this author. Once again, the author’s skill at describing the planet and people was amazing. The reader could easily imagine this world, and could not help but be awed at the surroundings. Her characters were expertly developed so the reader knew exactly how each felt and could understand what each was dealing with. Vaxa remained deeply invested in his mate and wanted her happiness. When some of the warriors did not want their race diluted with other beings and resented his taking an Earth wife, he was challenged to prove himself and risked his life for his mate and his people’s future. I loved this noble alien leader! I highly recommend this book and look forward to the continuation of this series. I voluntarily read a review copy of this book and my comments reflect my honest opinion.

This is the second installment and I have to say, if you want more action and a further introduction in the world of The Golden City and it inhabitants, then you'll want to read this one. This second one delves further into the life of the aliens and how Kate is adapting to life there as the only human. This one also intruduces you to the ambassadors of The Prime Leader who will also get their own book later on as well. How I wish there were visuals to see what this planet looked like!! Especially that pod that tasted like custard!! Much more action in this one as well as surprise appearance. Not going to spoil it for you, but read on !!

I read this one out of order. That being said, I was a little disappointed with this one. Not a whole lot happened except for the trials and the birth. The only other thing happening were the crazy errors throughout the book. Errors such as, “The wrist on her bruise ….” These were errors that any editor should have caught.

I loved , loved this story. What an wonderful read. I was so glad that the part 2 was available right after I finished part one.Now I can hardly wait for the next book in this series. So, so good. Don't miss out !.Thanks so much Zoey Draven.

The second book in this series. The pregnancy continues at an increased pace and there are factions from his race who challenge is position. Another reader mentioned some grammar mistakes and if the writers editor would throughly recheck this story it would make readers comments less disparaging. Overall a good sci fi story.

The Alien's Mate is the continuation of The Alien's Prize. The world building is fantastic, with plenty of drama and hot sex. I'd recommend this to anyone ripe for a great love story. There are two other books in the series and they're all good. The Alien's Lover is so good, I've read it three times and I read The Alien's Touch yesterday. It's clear that more stories are needed PDQ.

I think this part two of Kate and Vaxa'an's story was great. It covered more background of Vaxa'an's story, family and his world's history. It also created many possible plot lines for more stories in the series. There was more in depth world building and interaction with other characters, and it had a lot of heat! I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

Short and Sweet Reviewer back again for PART TWO of Kate and Vaxa'an.Perfect second parter, and I know we will check in on them more throughout the series but I'm so glad Zoey did more on them and Kate getting used to Luxiria and the issues with their people. Here for the sex? You wont be disappointed!

From the Back Cover

A THRILLING MAGNUM OPUS ON AMERICA’S GREAT CRIME EPICIn 1929, thirty-year-old gangster Al Capone ruled both Chicago’s underworld and its corrupt government. To a public who scorned Prohibition, “Scarface” became a local hero and national celebrity. But after the brutal St. Valentine’s Day Massacre transformed Capone into “Public Enemy Number One,” the federal government found an unlikely new hero in a twenty-seven-year-old Prohibition agent named Eliot Ness. Chosen to head the legendary law enforcement team known as “The Untouchables,” Ness set his sights on crippling Capone’s criminal empire. Today, no underworld figure is more iconic than Al Capone and no lawman as renowned as Eliot Ness. Yet in 2016 the Chicago Tribune wrote, “Al Capone still awaits the biographer who can fully untangle, and balance, the complexities of his life,” while revisionist historians have continued to misrepresent Ness and his remarkable career.   Enter Max Allan Collins and A. Brad Schwartz, a unique and vibrant writing team combining the narrative skill of a master novelist with the scholarly rigor of a trained historian. Collins is the New York Times bestselling author of the gangster classic Road to Perdition. Schwartz is a rising-star historian whose work anticipated the fake-news phenomenon. Scarface and the Untouchable draws upon decades of primary source research—including the personal papers of Ness and his associates, newly released federal files, and long-forgotten crime magazines containing interviews with the gangsters and G-men themselves. Collins and Schwartz have recaptured a bygone bullet-ridden era while uncovering the previously unrevealed truth behind Scarface’s downfall. Together they have crafted the definitive work on Capone, Ness, and the battle for Chicago.

One of the best, and best researched, true crime narratives published in a long time, Max Allan Collins and A. Brad Schwartz’s Scarface and the Untouchable: Al Capone, Eliot Ness, and the Battle for Chicago is a thrilling account of the efforts by Treasury Prohibition Unit agent Ness and his colleagues (and sometime rivals), “The Untouchables”, to bring down legendary gangster Capone. The authors thoroughly detail how Capone rose to power, first in New York, then Chicago, becoming the head of “The Outfit”, where he ran various bootlegging operations during the Prohibition period, noting how he and Ness, both first generation sons of immigrants, sought the American Dream. But Capone’s pursuit of that dream meant crushing anything -and anybody- in his way, no matter how bloody the results. Ness, also ambitious, but believing in common decency and respect for his fellow beings, manages to eventually derail Capone. But the bloody battle between organized crime and law enforcement in Chicago would still continue, long after Capone was finally put away for tax evasion in 1931.Collins and Schwartz provide a whole lot of meticulous documentation and details, including court transcripts, newspaper accounts, and police reports, among other sources, in depicting the dual stories of their two subjects, in the process bursting many previously held falsehoods about both. The book’s Introduction even notes how previous histories and biographies stressed the false portrait of honest, hard working and resourceful Ness as an egocentric and headline grabbing glory hound, while glorifying the evil and perfidious Capone. Those previously inaccurate depictions are pretty much debunked in this book. There’s lots of good stuff here, including how Ness’ “Untouchables” unit broke up various Capone breweries, often risking their lives; background on the infamous 1929 “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre”; the overtly political efforts to prosecute Capone (then President Herbert Hoover especially doesn’t come off well here) that almost backfired; and implications that some of Capone’s own men (including the equally infamous Frank “The Enforcer” Nitti, referred here under his actual real surname “Nitto”) conspired to bring him down because he was bad for business! Scarface and the Untouchable is riveting from start to finish! Definitely check it out!

Full disclosure: I'm about halfway through this book and came back to re-read the other reviews to see if I'm missing something. At times the writing is engaging and meets the "history as page turner" description. At other times it's embarrassingly bad. I almost never start a book and put it down. I've done that twice in the last 24 hours and then picked it right back up.Two examples: "On June 10, a judge heard the prosecution's pathetic case as to why Capone should be denied access to his own home. Seemed guests had been served alcohol--not a crime under Prohibition. Another prosecution witness, the president of a major Miami department store (who'd apparently attended the recent banquet), said he too had seen alcohol served. Also, some of the guests were not entirely sober. Imagine!" (p. 255). I'd expect this quality of writing from the 113th chapter of a Dan Brown novel but not from a serious history.Next: "The man he knew as the 'head of the dog track' was Edgar Joseph O'Hare, a fast-talking, clean living, lawyer from St. Louis." The next page and a half detail how O'Hare is a corrupt criminal. Clean living? (p. 266-267).If you can overlook the, at times, sensational and sloppy writing "Scarface and the Untouchable" is an entertaining and well researched biography of Ness and Capone. I'm just not sure that I can finish it. Imagine!

There have been a lot of different versions of the Al-Capone-versus-Eliot-Ness story. I'm old enough to have watched the Robert Stack version on television as it was produced by Desilu! I've been interested in this story ever since. With this offering, authors Collins and Schwartz prove their chops as researchers and as writers. The documentary detail of this book is amazing, but it's also written with a "true crime" voice that is very entertaining.

I have seen other biographies of Eliot Ness, most of them consisting of "revisionist" history seeking to discredit rather than examine the Prohibition agent's career. At least one of them, which I will not name, has a bibliography which consists of a couple pages of questionable secondary sources, some of which I know to be of little reliability, and uses those sources to tear down Mr. Ness in a manner that is repugnantly self-serving. Other books on the broader subject of the history of Prohibition and the organized crime that grew out of it either dismiss Ness with a short paragraph, or ignore him altogether.Scarface and the Untouchable: Al Capone, Eliot Ness, and the Battle for Chicago is the book I have waited for, having been fascinated by the story of Eliot Ness and Al Capone since I was 12 years old, watching the 1959-1963 series on television. Most of what I have found on the subject in the intervening decades has not been satisfying. This book by mystery writer Max Allan Collins and historian A. Brad Schwartz, is satisfying. It is meticulously-documented, using many original sources. The extensive endnotes testify to the quality of the careful research the authors have provided for us. This book examines the story and the interactions of both men in depth, with facts that debunk much of the mythology that has grown up around both. The authors' analysis of the implications inherent in Capone's criminal activity and in Ness's law enforcement efforts against it, and of the larger society in which both existed and contended, is the most cogent, deeply-sourced I have yet seen on this subject. The writing is superb, telling a story as gripping as any fictional thriller. This is the book that sets the record straight.

Each story is told from the perspective of Father Christmas himself, but there are other characters that sometimes take the spotlight and write to the children, including most notably a polar bear who seems to find himself in a bit of trouble with Father Christmas from time to time and has his own adventures worth sharing with Tolkien’s children. The letters are actually meticulously crafted demonstrations of art and calligraphy. While the former seems intended for a young audience, with dancing bears and a variety of colors, the typography is something to behold all by itself. When one considers the same meticulousness that went into certain other works of the author, it’s no wonder he put such thought and care into the lettering of these whimsical narrations. One recommendation: If you buy the Kindle edition of this book, do yourself a favor and read it on a color device such as a Fire tablet or iPad. A black and white, E Ink Kindle does not do the art, colors, and typography justice, and that’s what you’ll want to see most here. The stories told in each letter are charming in their own right, but they’re not the main attraction (though they do provide some amusement).Letters from Father Christmas by J.R.R. Tolkien is a fun, almost nostalgic-like glimpse into the lives of the Tolkiens. It’s the sort of book one can share with the children each and every year much like Mr. Tolkien did with his own children. I’m giving it a solid three rockets and hope you enjoy it.

Tolkien’s pal C. S. Lewis once said, “A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest,” and this book passes that test.Every year Tolkien would write one or more letters from Father Christmas to his children, and this book collects all 24 years’ worth (1920-1943), complete with pictures of the original letters and accompanying drawings. The first few are little more than simple notes, but they soon include little stories about the goings-on at the North Pole…most of which involve the North Polar Bear getting into some kind of mischief. North Polar Bear adds occasional editorial comments (my favorite part of the letters), and later on so does Santa’s elven secretary Ilbereth. The overall tone is cute and innocent without being sickly sweet. There are occasional mentions of times being difficult (presumably due to the Great Depression and WWII), but the overall tone is always positive. There is also a bittersweet element to the letters as we see occasional mention of each child getting older and no longer sending letters to Father Christmas or hanging their stocking.Overall, this is a beautiful little book. I enjoyed it so much that I am now reading it aloud to my children (ages 8, 10, and 13) and they are enjoying it immensely…mostly they want to see what the North Polar Bear is going to get up to next.

If you want the original with the full-sized letters, get the revised edition with the blue cover. It's a large hardcover book, and you can get it used. It's a great book. There are pictures of the letters, and there are some drawings. Where the letter would not have fit, they type it all out. Mine came with an odd taping job on the cover, but the tape was old so I fixed it.

Letters from Father Christmas was my favorite part of our 2017 Christmas. Such a wonderful book to read aloud. I loved it. My kids loved it and we can’t wait for next Christmas, so we can read it again!

Purchased along with the book was the audio which enhanced this book to the delight of my granddaughters. Tolkien's original art, including pictures of the letters and his drawings can easily be enhanced on this kindle version. THIS BOOK IS A DELIGHTFUL READ ! Tolkien also took into account what was historically taking place over each year at Christmas time. Some families were having a hard time during war. But the absolute best part goes to the wonderful character of POLAR BEAR.

Such a fun book! I read it with with my children, and I enjoyed it more than I expected. This is a collection of letters that J.R.R. Tolkien wrote to his children from Father Christmas from 1920 to 1943. The actual envelopes, letters, and pictures that he drew and painted for them are printed in the book, along with text that makes the letters easier to read. It is a delight to read the fun and crazy stories he made up for his children about Father Christmas' adventures with his friends and helpers in the North Pole. He adds more characters as the years go on - red elves, green elves, goblins, gnomes, etc. And you can see the beginnings of his ideas that found full fruition in The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. It is also interesting to hear about his children growing up, and the times they are living through - the depression, and World War II.

As a Santa, this touched my heart and has inspired me to start this tradition of letter writing. It has meant more to me then Tolkien could ever know. I would to let him know if he were alive. Thank you.

I fell in love with this charming take on Father Christmas by one of my favorite authors several years ago through the edition that had individual pockets and letters to pull out and enjoy. I like that this version is still rich in Tolkien's charming art, but it includes new stories, and easy to read text which makes this better for sharing with child. The North Polar Bear is my favorite!
