Brazil is a fantastic and rewarding place to visit and the warmth of the Brazilian people are it's greatest attraction. If you plan on going anywhere in Brazil besides the international hotel in front of Copacabana beach that you booked online, you're going to 'need' (not want, but NEED) to know at least 'some' Portuguese words and phrases. Having this book as a reference is a great item to keep in your backpack, and I think Berlitz still makes the best phrase book.Having traveled around Brazil in the past, I told my wife (she hadn't been there before) that not that many people in Brazil speak English, and it's not like in Europe where most American's can point at an item, make some funny faces, speak twice as loud (like somehow louder will make them understand), hopefully someone within an earshot who speaks English will bail you out ....and muddle their way through a 2 week vacation like this. That's not going to fly in Brazil. There isn't going to be anyone in that earshot 90% of the time outside of the tourist belt. After about the 3rd day on our trip my wife said, "Wow, you were right, not very many people DO speak English." Well, I speak enough Portuguese to get around comfortably, and have some conversations with people, but for my wife, it was tough because people on the street wanted to visit with her and she really couldn't communicate, or even order food at restaurants. If you are the inquisitive type, or just don't want to be an ugly American, having a good reference book is a must because new words come up, or you may want to ask for certain things while doing things on the street, restaurant, shopping, and most of what you may need should be in this book.Sure you can use Google Translator, that's my wife's secret weapon ....to whip out the phone at the absolute first sign of confusion. While I think Google Translator is a powerful piece of technology, and it HAS saved our hide a few times, particularly in very esoteric situations, it looks (and feels) incredibly stupid to do so ....plus, once you get past the situation you were in you really don't retain anything using G-translator that you can build upon in the future. If you really want to get something meaningful out of your trip to Brazil, put a little work into learning the language and you will be RICHLY rewarded. It is very similar to Spanish and Italian in structure so the basics are easy to pick up on.Pro's of the Berlitz phrase books (like this one):1) Compact size2) Pretty well organized3) Nice 'feel' with the paper stock they've selected. Better than some which use a cheaper paper4) Dictionary in the back that contains most (but not all) of what you're likely to run into in both English and Portuguese.5) "You May Hear" sections in the book are extremely helpful in pointing out what you are likely to hear back from waiters, ticket sellers, doctors, or other people you may encounter. Some books don't have this and due to the speed of conversation and the Brazilian accent, often times I wasn't able to understand what I was hearing, but later looking at it in the book, I was able to see the words and it made perfect sense ...something I was able to remember and use the next time.Things that could be better:1) There are a few pages of basic grammar in the back, but I'd like to see Berlitz dump the table of Contents and a few other things, and quadruple the grammar section. If you understand basic grammar and verb tense rules, you can really build a lot of sentences and go a long way with a little knowledge. That's the problem with most early learners ...they want to quick fast approach but unless you understand the very basics of Latin language structure, it's going to be very difficult and not make sense. This isn't adequate here IMO.2) Increase the "Romance" section. Ok, the first thing I do when I look at a Phrasebook is go to the 'Romance' section. Same with my wife. I don't know why, but we use the sentences on each other and make some jokes when we are traveling around, which makes our trip even more fun. I've read some phrasebooks (like Lonely Planet) which really get down to the nitty-gritty of romance and then some, almost makes ya blush!3) Page of common verbs. I'd like to see a page or two with tables of common verbs and tenses. This has got to be the most important thing to know and Berlitz has very little of it. They have some, but woefully inadequate IMO.4) Re-do their pictures - They have pictures on some pages, but rather than looking at that back of people standing at a subway station, why not put pictures of interesting places in Brazil that readers might not know about (and some type 6 text explaining the picture) that they may later want to visit?Overall, this is a good book to take with you and refer to during plane rides, in the hotel at night, or wherever. My ultimate suggestion before heading off to Brazil would be to buy a used copy of the Living Language Brazilian Portuguese - Complete Course with 4 CD's and Coursebook, and invest a little time each night a couple weeks before leaving. You will really learn something. The L/L Coursebook is really good, with a lot of grammar (but not overbearing). Then visit some You tube Portuguese language tutorial pages so you can also hear the Brazilian accent because it's more like French than Spanish and you need to start training your ear to start understanding the sounds, so you can recognize what you are hearing. I carried that L/L Coursebook with me when I was in Brazil and would thumb through it at night and on plane rides to learn things I forgot or how to say certain things, or verb tenses. Then keep the Berlitz as an everyday book in your backpack to brush up on things as you need. You can be conversational in no time.

Very basic, incomplete information.

Very useful during our trip to Brazil. Wish it had more verb conjugations, though.

Great little phrasebook, I'm usually pretty rubbish with languages but I do travel a lot and always try and learn some basic phrases to get me by. I'm going to Brazil for the World Cup and this book is ideal for picking up phrases quickly and easily, I love how it is broken into the different sections which are relevant, rather than the standard. And the phrases at the back especially for the World Cup are perfect! It has helped me feel really prepared and excited for the trip. Good buy, really happy with my purchase.

Didn’t get to use it as much but was handy to have on hand.

#11,758 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

First and foremost, this story is a young adult paranormal romance aimed mostly at 15 to 16 year old girls. The language is clean, the romance only goes as far as admiring someone’s flawless face/features, blushing, heart pounding kissing, and of course the introduction of a “love interest” to make it a love triangle. You will not get a lot of action or danger. For the most part the dangers the protagonist face is self-induced due to adrenaline seeking to unlock illusions of true love interest. Some honey before the vinegar. The introduction of the Wolfpack and the Native Americans who can shift into wolves was interesting. It is not the classic werewolf, which is later on also shown to have existed in this world but never on page. Yes it can be considered cheap to throw in Native Americans as a mystical magical but Noble Savages. It is a bit of a trope but it does feel legitimate in the story. A close-knit community with an oral tradition of magical history that comes to life protecting people from very serious threat. There is a background story with Bella's father and his friends that give an underlying pulse to the story that makes it feel a little deeper than it actually is. Meaning there is life beyond the main characters. One thing I wish we see more of in the series is day-to-day life beyond the obsession of love. Bella is still a blank slate pretty much, and while this allows readers to step into her shoes it does make her character feel flat and shallow at times. Unfortunately, this background story missed the mark as it was used mainly to create the final touch of a misunderstanding leading to the climax of the story and we do not get to see how it affects the side characters till later on in the series to a small degree.I do like the introduction of the Voltari because it shows just how dangerous the vampires really are. The character of Aro is all the more monstrous because it's nice and welcoming as he seems he is unabashedly what he is. I think these vampires if written in a different genre could have been quite terrifying but still serves their purpose. I would have loved to see more action in the series as a whole but I a more of an urban and epic fantasy reader with a little sci-fi thrown in.If I'm honest this is probably my least favorite of all the books. Mainly this is due to the fact that the story feels forced in the direction that it takes for the exclusive purpose of introducing what is clearly a false love interest in a love triangle as well as introducing the Wolfpack. Save for a first-time reader into the genre and of the series, it is clear that the author is at least in this part showing her hand that the character of Jacob, while an awesome person and friend, will be nothing but Mr. Friendzone. it is really hard to pull off a good love triangle with mature characters. The obsession that Bella has for Edward and visa versa still feels undeserved. You do not get much about their personalities outside of being possessive protective and fawning over each other's flawless beauty. We never really get into attributes beyond the physical and the fact that the good vampires do not eat people and Edward, though tempted beyond reason, has not kill Bella yet. In the 3rd and 4th books the characters do feel more real and do have some depth to them but that could easly be my imagination filling in the blanks. I know that they're kept mainly blank particularly Bella so that an reader can slip into the character and be pulled along the story. Here in the second book though this obsession is only shown to be one-sided as the character is shown to be pretty much depressed mentally unstable and uses friendship to get her fix through illusions that are brought upon by doing stupid and dangerous stuff.I think love triangles work for some readers because people can relate the feeling torn and having mixed feelings for different people. Perhaps if Bella was shown as a more sympathetic and deeper character with interest that went beyond her obsession with Edward and his perfection introducing Jacob Black might have worked. I think that it is more the commercialization of the series (Burger king Team Edward or Team Jacob cups lol) that made the love triangle seem to be a bigger part of the story than they actually was. For any of those who read series when it came out the direction was fairly clear by the next book despite what the hype said. the only question was and is what emotional wreckage will be left behind.

Continuing with my journey to revisit the Twilight saga story again in graphic novel form, New Moon Part 1 gave me a lonely, fragile, yet funny version of Bella. The illustrations were great, but lacked the climatic effect that the two Twilight volumes did. Most of the graphics were black and white with the exception of two or three short scenes. This volume lacked to capture the tone as effectively as I have come to expect. After Bella discovers Edward has left, I wanted to see her state of mind reflected more in the artwork, but this aspect of the story was glossed over. For something that impacted me so heavily in the novel and film versions, I was left feeling let down. The black and white drawn in grey shades, when I’d have liked it to be represented more visually desperate than a white-wash treatment. With that said, I still liked the darkness – the more sinister aspects of the storyline: the wolves, Laurent, Victoria. While the movies only hinted at this, in the novel it was meant to make you feel uncomfortable, or in the least, shiver. The artwork here captures the impact more in the tone of the novel, and I enjoyed getting more tension for Bella than I had from the film franchise.Though, my favourite pages from this volume would have to be the end pages, which I feel really captured the soul of the first half of New Moon – desolate, haunting and dark.So while I appreciated the artwork, the story felt flat. Admittedly there was a lot of detail in there that I did not expect, but there was something about it that failed to punch in its weight class. Possibly because some of my expectations went unmet.Really looking forward to Volume 2 later this year. And upon searching the internet, it doesn’t appear Young Kim is continuing with the series. Sad. I’d really like to see where her illustrations could have taken the saga.
