First and foremost, this story is a young adult paranormal romance aimed mostly at 15 to 16 year old girls. The language is clean, the romance only goes as far as admiring someone’s flawless face/features, blushing, heart pounding kissing, and of course the introduction of a “love interest” to make it a love triangle. You will not get a lot of action or danger. For the most part the dangers the protagonist face is self-induced due to adrenaline seeking to unlock illusions of true love interest. Some honey before the vinegar. The introduction of the Wolfpack and the Native Americans who can shift into wolves was interesting. It is not the classic werewolf, which is later on also shown to have existed in this world but never on page. Yes it can be considered cheap to throw in Native Americans as a mystical magical but Noble Savages. It is a bit of a trope but it does feel legitimate in the story. A close-knit community with an oral tradition of magical history that comes to life protecting people from very serious threat. There is a background story with Bella's father and his friends that give an underlying pulse to the story that makes it feel a little deeper than it actually is. Meaning there is life beyond the main characters. One thing I wish we see more of in the series is day-to-day life beyond the obsession of love. Bella is still a blank slate pretty much, and while this allows readers to step into her shoes it does make her character feel flat and shallow at times. Unfortunately, this background story missed the mark as it was used mainly to create the final touch of a misunderstanding leading to the climax of the story and we do not get to see how it affects the side characters till later on in the series to a small degree.I do like the introduction of the Voltari because it shows just how dangerous the vampires really are. The character of Aro is all the more monstrous because it's nice and welcoming as he seems he is unabashedly what he is. I think these vampires if written in a different genre could have been quite terrifying but still serves their purpose. I would have loved to see more action in the series as a whole but I a more of an urban and epic fantasy reader with a little sci-fi thrown in.If I'm honest this is probably my least favorite of all the books. Mainly this is due to the fact that the story feels forced in the direction that it takes for the exclusive purpose of introducing what is clearly a false love interest in a love triangle as well as introducing the Wolfpack. Save for a first-time reader into the genre and of the series, it is clear that the author is at least in this part showing her hand that the character of Jacob, while an awesome person and friend, will be nothing but Mr. Friendzone. it is really hard to pull off a good love triangle with mature characters. The obsession that Bella has for Edward and visa versa still feels undeserved. You do not get much about their personalities outside of being possessive protective and fawning over each other's flawless beauty. We never really get into attributes beyond the physical and the fact that the good vampires do not eat people and Edward, though tempted beyond reason, has not kill Bella yet. In the 3rd and 4th books the characters do feel more real and do have some depth to them but that could easly be my imagination filling in the blanks. I know that they're kept mainly blank particularly Bella so that an reader can slip into the character and be pulled along the story. Here in the second book though this obsession is only shown to be one-sided as the character is shown to be pretty much depressed mentally unstable and uses friendship to get her fix through illusions that are brought upon by doing stupid and dangerous stuff.I think love triangles work for some readers because people can relate the feeling torn and having mixed feelings for different people. Perhaps if Bella was shown as a more sympathetic and deeper character with interest that went beyond her obsession with Edward and his perfection introducing Jacob Black might have worked. I think that it is more the commercialization of the series (Burger king Team Edward or Team Jacob cups lol) that made the love triangle seem to be a bigger part of the story than they actually was. For any of those who read series when it came out the direction was fairly clear by the next book despite what the hype said. the only question was and is what emotional wreckage will be left behind.

Continuing with my journey to revisit the Twilight saga story again in graphic novel form, New Moon Part 1 gave me a lonely, fragile, yet funny version of Bella. The illustrations were great, but lacked the climatic effect that the two Twilight volumes did. Most of the graphics were black and white with the exception of two or three short scenes. This volume lacked to capture the tone as effectively as I have come to expect. After Bella discovers Edward has left, I wanted to see her state of mind reflected more in the artwork, but this aspect of the story was glossed over. For something that impacted me so heavily in the novel and film versions, I was left feeling let down. The black and white drawn in grey shades, when I’d have liked it to be represented more visually desperate than a white-wash treatment. With that said, I still liked the darkness – the more sinister aspects of the storyline: the wolves, Laurent, Victoria. While the movies only hinted at this, in the novel it was meant to make you feel uncomfortable, or in the least, shiver. The artwork here captures the impact more in the tone of the novel, and I enjoyed getting more tension for Bella than I had from the film franchise.Though, my favourite pages from this volume would have to be the end pages, which I feel really captured the soul of the first half of New Moon – desolate, haunting and dark.So while I appreciated the artwork, the story felt flat. Admittedly there was a lot of detail in there that I did not expect, but there was something about it that failed to punch in its weight class. Possibly because some of my expectations went unmet.Really looking forward to Volume 2 later this year. And upon searching the internet, it doesn’t appear Young Kim is continuing with the series. Sad. I’d really like to see where her illustrations could have taken the saga.
