This is a smaller sized version of several highly illustrated editions of pirate books, and textually wise, better than some. There is a big book out there "A World Wide Illustrated History: PIRATES -- Terror on the High Seas from the Caribbean to the South China Sea", also edited by David Cordingly; that one is much larger, even better illustrated, but the test leaves something to be desired. This one is smaller, thiner, but also with fine visuals, but also a better textual treatment of the subject. I like both of these books, but prefer this one for the reading, and the other for the looking. Get both, if you can find them cheap enough. This volume does go a bit deeper into the subject matter than some others and may be one of the better basic studies. Read A General History of Pirates by Capt. Charles Johnson (1724) for the standard version of the stories of individual pirates (reading books 300 years old can be a little bit of a challenge, but you get used to it).The contents of this book provide a history of piracy from ancient times to the present and cover a wide variety of topics. One herein will learn of piracy in the Middle Ages and the development of the corsairs of North Africa. It gives a thorough picture of the whole spectrum of activities along the Spanish Main from the earliest days onward, and does not concentrate on the so-called "Golden Age". There is further a chapter on piracy in the South China Sea. The book features good maps in addition to the other copious illustrations. This book is also somewhat devoid of the sensationalism which many of the earlier works provided, and one does not get a lot of the "pirates as a cultural phenomena" stuff. This a a good, solid, overall history of the sea robbers as the real things.

This is a wonderfully written book which is a history of piracy from its roots in ancient Egypt right up to the present day. The book not only discusses the "Golden Age of Piracy" when Morgan, Blackbeard and Captain Kidd plied their trade in the Caribbean, but it also covers the extensive pirate activity in the ancient world as well as its modern manifestation. The links between the breakdown of social order or a political power vacuum and its effects on the rise of piracy during various historical ages are addressed as is the centuries long pirate conflict between Islam and Christendom during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. This is a well written historical work and the pirates are portrayed as the frequently ruthless and bloodthirsty men (and some women) they were rather than as the charming rogues of so many Hollywood motion pictures. The book is also full of detailed full color maps and pictures relating to piracy which both ably supplements the text as well as being esthetically pleasing in their own right. The principle author Angus Konstam was a commentator on a recent History Channel documentary on piracy and his in-depth knowledge of the subject makes this book enjoyable by both a serious student of the subject as well as the newly interested reader. In these days of "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies and the "Pirate Master" reality show this book is a welcome dose of historical fact into a subject which has been long been dominated by romantic fantasies

This is an Osprey book, so you need to think in terms of an adult version of the Eyewitness picture books. You shouldn't expect an exhaustively comprehensive treatment of the subject, after all they tend to be only 1/4 inch thick.So, with expectations aligned, this is a fairly well done treatment of the subject of pirates from the Golden Age of Piracy. There are quite a few pictures to compliment the text and the topics covered include their origins, dress, tactics, flags, ports and ships. Konstam gives us some brief biographies of a few of the famous names like Teach, Bonny, Reade, Rackam, Vane, Every, Bonnet, Kidd and the Dread Pirate Roberts.An excellent overview suitable for adolescents and adults, for more detail on William Kidd I suggest Richard Zacks' The Pirate Hunter, for more of an overview of piracy through the ages I suggest Konstam's The History of Pirates.

This is a great book to anyone interested on this period and in piracy.Angus Konstam's text is both concise and accurate,while Angus McBride's illustrations are certainly some of the best I have ever seen.The book is mostly about British pirates which should be expected,since Osprey is from Great Britain,and British sailors were always inclined towards piratical activities.The sections on pirate warfare and pirate codes are particularly nice,and you get biographies on such pirates as Blackbeard and Captain Kidd as well.The only thing I miss is a color cut-away illustration of a pirate ship.Even though,I must say It's an A+ job from front to back cover.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book! In the beginning, I was not totally immersed in the book, but it did not take long for me to start to think, “wow, this is actually really interesting.” I love mystery, crime, and thriller books, and I think this book did a good job intertwining all of those aspects. The author, Mark Stephen O’Neal, did a great job making this book easy and fun to read. I never felt bogged down with unnecessary details. Also, the fact that this book seemed to start out to revolve only simply around sports but then took an unexpected turn to mystery was very exciting. It was also something I have never really read about before, so the theme of this mystery book all together was unique and refreshing. The author definitely had a good, new take! Although the mystery itself was not anything too suspenseful or new, I still thoroughly enjoyed reading about the kidnapping and money schemes. Overall, this is a great book for any person looking for a good crime mystery!

Brock is a basketball player, and a good one at that. Although his team did not survive the playoffs, Brock was still offered an extension on his basketball contract. He travels to Chicago to spend time with his family- his stepdad and brother to whom he is close to. This is where things start picking up in the plot -his stepdad is kidnapped and the kidnappers want one million dollars for his return. Was the contract extension and the kidnapping timing a coincidence? I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I'm not a huge basketball fan, but the story was very intriguing and kept me turning the pages. The writing was pleasantly surprising as well, and I'm looking forward to the second in the series.

I was pretty surprised when I opened this book to see it was only 90 pages considering the description of the book. But, the pace really kept up the whole way through with absolutely no lag time anywhere, which is probably better than having too many unnecessary scenes.It's a pretty good set up to the rest of the series. You get a little character development and the book ends with some intrigue as to what will happen next. It builds the whole time so you expect to find that there's more to the whole kidnapping than Brock originally knows and then finally learn at the end what it is. So, it leaves you interested in finding out what kind of trouble Brock and Malik will find themselves in with the next book and how quickly things will unravel for some characters. I did wish that there was a little more character development in this book. You barely geet to learn anything about Brock's father or brother or Malik, but hopefully that is gone into further in future books. It was nice to get some good insight into Brock's upbringing and to follow Naomi's story throughout and see them connect in the end. Very interested to see what could develop between Brock and Naomi. All in all, an intriguing and fast-paced jump start to a series with an ending that makes you want to dig into the next one. Very nicely done.

My oh my. This storyline is just begging for a Hollywood manuscript. I mean a young, good-looking sports superstar abruptly caught in the midst of a massively high profile American kidnapping? There’s no way this one CAN’T end up on a summer blockbuster list at some point in the near future.In all seriousness though, if you are a crime/thriller addict like I am and always on the lookout for talented new writers (like I am), then I bet my bottom dollar you’ll enjoy this quick and easy read. There’s a certain knack for excellent fictional thrillers that I can’t exactly put my finger on, but I’ll tell you that I’ve read plenty of duds over the years, and this one is no dud. At the end of the day it accomplishes exactly what I wanted it to - quality entertainment, an engaging read, and exposure to a new author that I’ll definitely be keeping my out on in the future. Highly recommended.

This book in the Brock Lane chronicles is a great first book. I haven’t heard of this author before, but the storyline that I thought was going to be more of a sports book took a turn into a great mystery. While Brock is dealing with his own personal life and trying to navigate his career, his life is quickly turned upside down by a kidnapping and demand. His sudden step into a grim reality is captivating and the quick change in pace and almost in genre is interesting and exciting.O’Neil has a style of writing that is clean and to the point, but doesn’t lack any detail or leave you wanting anything else. This was a fun read that makes me want to find out what is next for Brock and the career and family that he works so hard to protect. A great read for many different types of readers, as there is a little of everything, including a story of drive, perseverance, and faith.

In order for him to be released, one million dollars has to be sent to the kidnappers by a certain time before harm comes to his stepfather. It’s up to Brock to come up with this massive amount before tragedy occurs.O’Neal’s writing style is phenomenal and he keeps the story flowing well. The book is action-packed and you’ll be flipping through the pages quickly to find out if Lane can raise the money needed before it’s too late. If you enjoy suspenseful novels, definitely check this book out.

I read this book in just a few hours. I couldn’t put it down.I didn’t know much about the Spice Girls, but I enjoy Mel B. on America's Got Talent. Brutally Honest is just that. Some of her story was very unpleasant for me to read, but I plugged along. Never having been abused in the way she has been, and by so many men, it was difficult for me to understand why she kept falling for the same kind of abusive men. I did begin to understand how this happened to her, and I feel so much empathy for her and her daughters. I hope very much that she is now as strong as she says she is and will stay away from those types of men. I hope the drinking has stopped. I hope she continues to see Dr. Sophy until she is one hundred percent sure that she is cured of all of her addictions, including men. She’s only in her early forties. I think she’s still susceptible to falling for the same kind of guy. Be careful, Mel B!! I hope you make a ton if money with this book.

What a gut wrenching book. I cried during most of it. Melanie packs a he'll of a story but it's been a hell of a life. This is a woman I admired and thought she had everything and the best of life. Truth shall set you free. Being a abused wife myself, I know all the signs so reliving that through this book was incredibly hard and there were times I had to put it down and stop. But I am thankful that she had the courage to get this done and start her life over and be the mom her children deserve. My heart, prayers and love to put to a remarkable woman who got sucked into a terrifying experience and was able to recover and come away with her life and love. There is a special place in hell for abusers and I pray one day they all get what they deserve. May Melanie now have the life she and her children deserve. Book packs a wallup!

A heartbreaking, inspiring and raw memoir. This book will strike all of your emotions.The audiobook is narrated by Melanie, her daughter, mother, and third party voice talent that Melanie auditioned. Who narrates the book is not important. What’s important is the story it tells.

I wasn't a huge Spice Girls fan but I was somewhat familiar with her Spice Girls days because my little brother was a big fan. My familiarity with Mel was from her brief reality show and her time on AGT. I've always liked Mel's public persona as I've find her funny and affable. Initially, I had no plans to read the book but after hearing Mel B discuss it on TV I changed my mind.I'm glad I checked it out. Once I started the book I couldn't put it down. It only took me three days to finish it. I had no idea that Melanie's experienced so many trials and tribulations in her life. Parts of her story are hard to read but ultimately, I came away feeling relieved and proud that Mel finally had the strength to leave her ex-husband. She's a survivor in every sense of the word. I hope the next chapters in her life are filled with happiness and continued success in her career.I don't want to give anything away but the book will hold your attention even if you have just a passing interest in Mel's life. I do wish she'd talked more about her Spice Girls days but from her perspective I suppose she feels like she shared all that needed to be said. Much of the book talks about the last ten years of her life with her ex-husband and her struggle to survive his abuse. Those chapters she seems to "tell-all" but I'd say the rest of the book is measured and respectful. She's honest but doesn't share more than is really necessary. After all, she does have two young daughter's to protect. I enjoyed the book immensely.

I read tons of biographies and this one really got to me emotionally because I don't believe it's the end nor "happily ever after" for Melanie Brown and Family. Yes, it's brutally honest and I've never been in that kind of relationship because after one incident I would be gone, but that's me. With her, she seemed to want children to "fix" her problems and it seemed her life came first-her children had to follow her wherever they went, and they suffered just as much, probably more. I'm a firm believer to protect children as number 1 idea. I wasn't thrilled to read what happened to her during her choice relationships (except with Eddie Murphy-good guy) but NO, she didn't communicate with Murphy and figured I'll go back and get him...stubborn woman! Instead she ended up with men with MAJOR issues instead! Children again, suffering. If I had read, at the end, that she doesn't drink anymore, and in a program changing her life, cleaning up the past emotionally (not with riches, with emotions) then wow, but she still parties and that scares me. I pray for the children and I hope she decides to put them first. Wait till they are all over 18 years old, then look for a partner in life, great. But they are all still at risk, in my humble opinion which I know equals nothing herein. As for the book cover with her left hand exposed and no ring...what is she saying again? And that Stephen guy is someone who I would hate to even think exists in this world...but should be behind bars forever. NO, he owns a restaurant? WTF is that? I don't recommend this book to anyone unless I know they are going thru this and with a major drinking problem. I cried every night over the last few chapters for her pets and children, her father too. Read this if you like SCARY in your SPICE only!

Amazingly the best HARD BACK players guide I have ever seen of all of my video games. I am 73 y.o and an avidvideo game player, and I have waited 2 years for this, and it is here, and it is BEAUTIFUL with vividcolors and pictures and clear instructions. A thick & heavy book that will be handed down to myfamily heirloom. Quality & paper is top grade, something to be proud of. Yes, this is 5 Stars Plus +++++I highly recommend this book for any RDR2 fan...It is addicting and the most beautiful graphics I haveever seen in a game and this book shows you the way to increase your pleasure......ENJOY !!!

First of all, the print is small. I’m 58 and I use 275 magnification readers to paint military figures and other micro stuff these old eyes need help with. The font is so small I couldn’t read anything without an addition magnifying glass. Maybe it’s just me, but why in this day and age are we forced to read fine print smaller than the near invisible stuff on the bottom of a used car dealership’s finance contract.Secondly, the whole purpose for me to buy a book is to have access to the information when I know I’m not going to get a good signal for example, going to a mountainous region to absorb the peace and serenity of nature while unwinding. There’s so much information not in this guide. Sure, they touch base and say for example your horses tack can change the stats on the horse, but I couldn’t find any of the saddle, stirrup and blanket stats anywhere. What good is that if your away from your internet service and can’t plan, take notes for the things you would like in the game if they didn’t include it in the book. I’ve hunted for information about trains, fast travel etc and again, vague. It doesn’t say if your horse meets you there or do you have to find a stable. It doesn’t tell you how, or if fast travel is a one way trip. There’s no talk about any weapon calibers, the game includes it, but again we’re talking about being AFK. I’ve used bows on three star animals, perfect shot to the head, I skin the thing, thinking oh boy, I’m on my way to the dude that makes special outfits. I pick it up, it’s only two star. One head shot, no other damage and I get good after skinning, why? The book should expain penalties. I watched a video, they said if ya plug the thing full of holes, you’ll get a penalty, even after skinning the wound was above the cut of the skinning. The book is riddled with like just touching base but it leaves out so much. Heck, I’d pay more, or should I have too when the advertising says it’s a tell all. Sure, I expect to hear, well, we had to print the book and have it written before the end of the games design, or they’ll possibly change stats later which will render it useless. If that’s the case, why are some stats there? You get the drift of my meaning. I gave it three stars for paper quality, layout etc. there’s a ton of work that went into this book but it falls short in some aspects in my humble opinion.

I wasn't sure whether to order this book because part of the fun of playing a game is discovery and figuring out what is what. But this game in particular found me wondering what to do next in so many places. I searched the built-in Help system and got some answers, but they were often incomplete. There is a lot of free info online, but I didn't want to sort through it all and didn't want to week through hours of help videos. This is a HUGE game with a lot to discover and I didn't want to waste any more time being frustrated on how to accomplish a particular thing, or determine the best way of doing something. This book fills that need very well.This book is a reference and consists of 386 full-color illustrated pages. The 7 chapters include: 1)Primer 2)Missions 3)Exploration 4)Atlas 5)Weapons 6)Items 7)Extras.Each chapter has numerous sections or sub-chapters which are too many to list here.This book is LOADED with useful illustrations, charts and tables that visually describe each part of the game. Along the right column of each page is a "locator" which indicates the chapter and section that you are currently on.If you love the RDR franchise but have been frustrated with the game, then this book is for you. You can quickly lookup whatever is required to get you back on track enjoying the game. It's filled with tips, tricks and lots of detailed information that you can lookup quickly so you can focus more on having fun. In some ways it compensates for what the game should never have lacked in the first place. But I have found it a useful reference to get me back on track.

I got my book 3 days later than it was supposed to come, that's fine I had a lot of the game to play anyways lol. The hardcover book is t h i c c lol. Get it. very detailed stuff.

Yes it didn't arrive Friday when the game released and I didn't get it until today but other than that negative occurrence the guide itself covers everything in the game! Can also be useful for the trophy/achievement hunters by giving tips and making it known that some trophies/achievements are missable!

This guide is fantastic! It has everything necessary to get gold badges on story missions, it has locations of every collectible in the game, and it has good tools to get better at some of the side challenges like hunting, fishing, five finger filet, etc. It's an essential item for a completionist or trophy hunter. Would definitely recommend.

The content of this guide is great, but it seems many of the copies sent out have manufacturing defects. The pages of mine are all wavy and shrivelled at the top and bottom throughout the entire book, almost as if it got wet somehow. Very unfortunate as the book and content itself are really good. Wish that it didn’t arrive damaged :(

Just received my guide today and I couldn't be happier. Yes I didn't receive it on the day of the game release, but that is fine with me. Waiting 4 extra days is not a big deal (for me). The guide is jam packed with useful information, and I spent over 30 minutes reading all about the game before even playing. After reading how important paying attention to details in this game is, I am super happy I bought the guide. I would miss out on so many missions and events if I didn't have it. I recommend it.
