Oh, Jessica...I so want to feel sorry for you but...I can't! I feel like the writing in Playing with Fire greatly improved from the first two books. But, I'm still so angry that Jessica is such a jerk. And when Jessica kinda-sorta becomes the victim, I want to feel sorry for her but she's a victim of her own circumstances!I have to keep in mind that these books are written in the '80s and fat-shaming sadly still occurs. But, what bothers me is that even the "good" guys that we want to feel bad for are guilty of fat-shaming. I mean, geez! Jessica treats Winston like a doormat. So, you would think that he would be more understanding of others. Yet, when goody-two-shoes-Elizabeth decides to fix him up with a sweet girl like Robin, he makes the comment, “But Robin ...well, she’s OK. We really don’t have much in common, though. I get nervous around people who eat all the time.”Okay, back to feeling sorry for Jessica. I really wanted to feel sorry for her. No one deserves to be in an abusive relationship and let's just face it, Bruce is a patronizing creep. But when Jessica's doing things like ditching her date to go somewhere with Bruce and calling her "friend" Robin a tubby and musing that Robin would be kind of pretty if she lost weight, I really just want to slug Jessica.Overall, I think these books explore themes still relevant to today's youth. Kids still bully others. People are still body-shamed. But, I think that there has been an overall shift in how authors approach these matters. Typically you will see an effort from the author to show how wrong these things are. This is the one fundamental flaw with the SVH series so far. I hope to see some improvements as the series continues. What I rate this book now: 3 starsWhat I would have rated this book in 1995: 4. The insinuation that Bruce and Jessica were doing a little something more than making out would have bothered me. I was a goody-goody when I was 13. I would have loved Jessica's revenge on Bruce though.

This was definitely one of the better sweet valley high books that I read. Jessica Wakefield finally catches Bruce Patman's eye, one of the wealthiest (and not to mention snobbiest) guys in Sweet Valley High. She has had a crush on him for a long time, and now that Bruce starts showing interest in her, she goes out with him everywhere, and does whatever he tells her to do. Elizabeth starts getting worried because Jessica starts getting a change of attitude. But how can she convince Jessica that Bruce is a traitor, when Jessica worships him like a God? Apart from this, there are also side storylines in this book such as Tony Conover, who claims to be a representative for an agency and wants to make `The Droids' (sweet valley high's music band) famous. But the members of the group, start fighting over their priorities after this. Also Todd and Elizabeth try to set up Robin and Winston together, since Robin has a crush on him.The main reason I liked this book was because we get to see Jessica Wakefield change her attitude from ordering everyone to taking orders from someone. You would never think that Jessica would sink so low, but that's exactly what happens in this book.I also liked the character of Robin, and how clueless she is about being Jessica's friend. She is one of the main characters in the next book of the series `Power Play'. All in all, this was a fun read.

Once again, Jessica Wakefield has gotten her way. Fresh from her greatest social triumph, Jessica proceeds to sink her hooks into rich, handsome Bruce Patman, the most eligible, sought-after guy at Sweet Valley High.Or has Bruce gotten his hooks into Jessica? Elizabeth, Jessica's twin, notices a big change in her sister. Suddenly Jessica's dropping everything just to spend time with Bruce.Elizabeth doesn't trust Bruce one bit --- he's arrogant, demanding, and way too fast. Jessica can usually hold her own with any guy, but this time Elizabeth is afraid her sister may be going too far...Winston is still starry eyed in love with Jessica. Robin, on the other hand, has a big crush on Winston and begins to wonder if he has eyes only for Jessica.Meanwhile, the band The Droids start playing at a local club in town and have a new manager. Can they make the big time?Stay tuned for more drama.

If you are/were a fan of the original Sweet Valley High series, go to used bookstores or Salvation Army. Whatever you do, do NOT buy this 2008 reissue of the series. The plot is boring, the characters are unlikable for the most part, and the attempt at writing teen slang is silly and off-putting. We are meant to root for Jessica, a bratty, flirty 16-year-old, as she finally lands wealthy Bruce Patman as a boyfriend. Since they are both equally superficial and egotistical, it ought to be a match made in heaven. But Bruce is picky about his girlfriends: they can't beat him at tennis, they have to cater to all his whims, and they can't be on the cheerleading squad. (A high school senior who doesn't want to date a cheerleader? Shockingly, yes.) Jessica tries to appease him, but her twin Elizabeth is worried that she's sacrificing too much of herself. Well, since we see Jessica being mean to others and generally being snobby, before AND during dating Bruce, I don't see how exactly Jessica ever really changed. One thing I really disliked was Jessica's attitude towards new girl Robin, whom she pretends to be friendly with only when it serves her interest. Robin, you see, is larger than a size 4 (how much larger? I guess it's up to the reader), and Jessica's thoughts on Robin's body shape are nasty and almost hateful. Again, there is nothing to like about Jessica's character, so it's hard to wish her a happy ending.

Baroque Ornament and Designs (Dover Pictorial Archive), by Jacques Stella

From the Back Cover

Baroque art and architecture—extravagant in concept, exuberant in spirit, elaborate in detail—flourished in seventeenth-century Europe, and through the ages has continued to stir us with its vitality and dynamism and its mood of barely suppressed passion. In the architecture of St. Peter's in Rome, St. Paul's in London, and Santa Maria della Salute in Venice as well as in the works of Michelangelo, Bernini, and Rubens, the Baroque spirit lives today. Now graphic artists can add Baroque flair to almost any graphic project with this magnificent collection of royalty-free motifs. The seventeenth-century French artist Jacques Stella (1596–1657) embodies the Baroque sensibility. Early in his career, Stella spent seven years in Florence, working for Medici Prince Cosimo II and enjoying the acquaintance and advice of the master engraver Jacques Callot. He spent another ten years in Rome, where he came under the artistic influence of his friend Nicolas Poussin. On his return to France, championed by Cardinal Richelieu, he became court painter to Louis XIII, and founded a career that makes him esteemed as one of the major French artists of the seventeenth century. This book presents engravings executed by Stella's niece after drawings of Classical motifs probably made by Stella during his years in Italy. These engravings, first published in Paris in 1658, comprise a magnificent sourcebook of ready-to-use Baroque design, filled with highly embellished individual ornaments, decorative motifs, and a dazzling array of border elements.Included are lush florals and foliates, fruits, leaves, birds, shells, acorns, and more—as individual ornaments and rosettes, as repeating motifs in a frieze, and in other useful arrangements. Now this sturdy, inexpensive edition makes them available to a wide audience for convenient reproduction as well as for study, inspiration, and enjoyment.Dover (1987) selection of plates from Divers Ornements d'Architectures, Recueillis et Dessegnes Apres l'Antique par Mr. Stella, Peintre Ordinaire du Roy et Chevalier de Son Ordre de St. Michel, originally published in Paris, 1658.

While filled wit beautiful illustrations I was looking for more of the style shown on the cover. There are several pages that have rather flat renditions of the designs. While they are still beautiful I would have liked the whole book to be more shaded, three-dimensional designs.

Great designs, it the quality if the images are pretty poor. Hard to see some of the details...okay, most of the details if you are trying to replicate the design.

One of my all time favorites for firearms engraving -I've run borders (see Dover Book on Borders) into corner elements with astonishing results - and what DO you put on that forward flat area of the Yellow Boy? Or behind or in front of the plate on the 1873 (or even ON the plate)? You'll find it here -- and it will be beautiful!

Nice resource for artists!

not crazy about this one either....most images small and dark...wanted to use for patterns in painting. not quite what I expected

great artistic ideas

A good book needed for my work. It will inspire me to my sculptures in stone. Ornaments are fantastic. Are the basis for further work.

A small book that has a collection of very well drawn designs. These have all been done in a way that makes it very easy to read the contours for carving projects.

This is a biography of a recent hall of fame inductee Bill Parcells, whose legendary work at the Giants, the Patriots, the Jets, and the Cowboys keep being discussed, and who has trained many first-rate coaches including Bill Bellichik, Tom Coughlin, and Sean Payton. The book is very well researched through seemingly countless hours of interviews with the coaches, players, friends, owners, the family, and Parcells himself, and digs deeply into the minds of Parcells. The book is very long and requires some patience on the reader's part. For example, those who have the strongest interest in the Parcells period of the Giants may find the book a bit boring toward the end where his involvement with The Dolphins is extensively described. Given the number of years he coached for colleges and pros, the number of people that show up in the book is gigantic. It was sometimes difficult for me to recall where I had seen the name before in the book. I trust that the printed version of the book has an index that helps the reader to navigate through the book with the names, but the version I bought was an e-book, and so I found it a bit confusing on my end. Overall, this was very good entertainment.

I lived through Parcells' tumultuous tenure as Patriots head coach and had very mixed feelings about him. I bought the book after listening to a very contrite Parcells talk about the book and his career on sports talk station WEEI in Boston. I couldn't put the book down. It's amazing to discover the many people with whom his career has intersected - not just Belichick, Jerry Jones and Lawrence Taylor, bit Steve Sloan, Rex Dockery, Bob Knight, Todd Bowles and Ken Hatfield. Parcells is brutally honest about his shortcomings as a father, his regrets about how it ended badly with the Patriots and his relationship with Belichick. This book is Parcells at his best. I now see him as an incredibly complex guy who had a remarkably positive influence on many people in the game. And his relationships with Curtis Martin, who considers him his father figure, and Taylor speak volumes about the human side of Parcells.

Amazing biography, well written. The best part, to me, was to see this man's inflection point: There was a clear moment that Bill understood unequivocally that he had to win to keep his job, his career. The entire book could be divided into before and after that moment. Seeing how he changed his behavior accordingly was fascinating and instructive. The latter half of his career was spellbinding because of his inability to resist the siren call of coaching, and the details of his complicated relationship with his family. This book is amongst my favorite football biographies, along with Saban and The Education of a Coach. Interestingly, all three men have ties to one another.

Parcells was the most interesting coach the Pats have had in my life time. While he didn't win us the Superbowls that Belichick has brought us, who didn't look forward to his press conferences and comments? If you love the Pats or the Giants I think you should read this book. While it also covers him in Dallas and Miami I found it to be mostly Giants, then Pats then the other teams.

Overall, a very solid book. Well written, informative and a comprehensive breakdown of Parcels life. As a big football fan, I learned a lot and found out plenty of new details to things I thought I already knew. Two minor complaints; the author was sometimes a little too repetitive with his word choices. 'Scrutinized' for example, was used over 20 times in the book. Also, he refers to the Stanford Cardinal as the Stanford Cardinals. Little complaints, and probably bound to happen in such a big and detailed book, but that's the only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars. As far as covering everything you wanted to know about the life of a football legend? This book lives up to the bill!

I just finished reading: Parcells A Football Life. The author, Nunyo Demasio, through his meticulous research and vast diction effectively paints a detailed portrait of a football immortal. Parcells is a man with great intestinal fortitude, endurance, and unmatched authentic football credibility. Paradoxically, Parcells’s neglect of his wife and daughters’ emotional needs combined with his curt disposition may cause many readers to have contempt for him. The pendulum of judgment swings back to the positive when learning of his noble leadership traits: honesty, loyalty, intelligence, preparedness, motivator, strategist etc...The Kindle version’s touch word/definition feature enhanced my reading capacity. Using this feature allowed me to have a full understanding of Demasio’s thoughtful word choice, which provided me with a more comprehensive understanding of his syntax. This along with his painstaking hunt for abstract facts that are insignificant on their own, but have great depth of meaning when strung together, left me impressed not only with the subject matter, but also with his top-shelf writing. Because of the author’s use of detailed dialogue, description of voice inflection, body language, and facial expressions, along with the personality traits of the characters, I felt that I was observing many of the events first hand. The author seamlessly stitched together various bodies of information where they intersected at a common thread. Perhaps no better example was his connection of Parcells’s brother Don’s passing to the Army/Navy football game, John F. Kennedy, Al Michaels, Roy Williams, God, and the #31.Adding to the piece’s entertainment value was the sprinkling of humor throughout the chronological text. There were moments of great levity, like the time Parcells went around the locker room pushing his Texas Tech players and asking, “are you ready?” When Parcells got to a player named Billy Bothwell, the player got up and pushed Parcells back with a hard shove, causing him to tumble to the floor. Future NFL head coach Romeo Crennel, while standing close by, said: “I think he’s ready, coach.” The final stage of contract negotiations between Parcells, The Atlanta Falcons, and the Miami Dolphins at Parcells’ home provided both high comedy as well as insight into how NFL power brokers make their most important financial decisions. The use of football history mini-lessons gave context to several interrelationships present in the football community. Some of the connections made involving college football, the NFL, and the career paths of many average and hall of fame players and coaches prove to be quite intriguing.Whether you like or dislike Parcells personally this is a must read for anyone interested in learning what it takes for players, coaches, executives, and owners to achieve success in the ultra competitive NFL. An investment of time spent by any young writer for the purpose of analyzing the scribe’s labor will also pay meaningful future dividends. I Highly Recommend “Parcells: A Football Life!”
