Great old school recipes (Swiss steak, stuffed peppers, chicken divan) and pages with nostalgic excerpts from previous editions in the 50s and 60s. Themed party ideas. This was well worth the money, great gift for those who like to cook or entertain.
I pre-ordered this book several months ago thinking it would truly be a lost collection of Betty Crocker recipes compiled into one book.Unfortunately, that is not the case.Some of the recipes are not even vintage and the ones that are have already been published in other Betty Crocker books over the years, mainly those in the Desserts chapter—including:Starlight Yellow CakeVelvet Crumb CakeGingerbreadJelly RollLemon Chiffon CakeCream PuffsMolasses CrinklesHermitsBanana Cream PieIf you have any of the above recipes, you'll probably want to skip buying this book. It really is more of a retrospective look back at Betty Crocker with previously published recipes thrown in. Why call the book Lost Recipes if the recipes in it are not lost?Other things that irked me when I flipped through the book:The Appetizers & Snacks chapter features one cocktail recipe (Manhattan Cocktails), but no others—except for a few non-alcoholic beverages (mostly Punches).Chapter 3 is called Breads and Coffee Cakes, yet only one coffee cake—Cherry Swirl Coffee Cake—is included in the chapter (and it calls for Bisquick and canned cherry pie filling). The remaining recipes in the chapter fall under the Quick Bread or Yeast Bread category. No Streusel, Crumb, or Sour Cream coffee cakes are included in the chapter.Maybe I took the title a little too seriously, but it definitely wasn't what I expected. I did find two recipes in the Main Dishes chapter (Stuffed Peppers, Meat Loaf) that I'd probably try.If you're on the fence about whether you should buy this book or not, my advice would be to preview it before you do.
I was so disappointed when I read the introduction and they said they had modified the recipes for today's cooks. The whole point of looking at recipes from the past is to see how food was made back then. The problem I find with the new Betty Crocker cookbooks is that they use too many prepackaged ingredients such as ranch dressing mix instead of the actual individual components. If you want to find lost recipes, try thrift stores, used book stores, and estate sales.
This book is a rare find as it uses recipes made from scratch. An example is the recipe, "Pigs in a Blanket". This book has you make the dough cover from scratch where the new recipe, also from Betty Crocker, has you using the dough you can find in a tube.
I haven’t even had this for 24 hours, so I haven’t cooked out of it yet, but am really looking forward to doing so! The recipes are just modernized enough to be a little more appealing to today’s palate, without losing the spirit of the original recipe. The book layout is adorable—handy housewifery hints at the beginning, a note on the origins of every recipe, and each page is made up to look like you are reading an old cookbook. Also, every recipe has a photo. It’s delightful, and I highly recommend it!
I am overjoyed with this in its entirety! I've recommended it on FB to my friends already. I love learning different techniques they used back then like making both cornbread and hush puppies by cooking first the cornmeal and water together and so on. Many most requested recipes are included with several from 1961 cookbook. Would make an excellent gift too!
I was surprised by the old recipes that this had. I wish I had the old red book again. I lost it in so may of my moves. However, with this book, it brought back many of the old recipes I used to make and had forgotten in time. This book is easy to read and with help young new cooks how to substitute ingredients and other information lost in time.
I was hoping for more... nice hard cover book and an ok item, but not very many recipes
