Yesterday, at the Books Inc Store, Berkeley, I attended the author’s lively presentation. She answered audience questions with precise knowledge, concision, and grace. “THE NORDIC THEORY OF EVERYTHING: In Search of a Better Life," documented with more than 400 research citations and written in highly engaging style is an excellent example of lucid critical analysis.The widely held stereotype in the US of Nordic countries is that they are “nanny states” that discourage individuality and impose high taxes. In fact, the Nordic countries foster enhanced adult individuality by minimizing dependencies on family members and employers. And their Nordic countries' taxes are comparable to the US taxes.Just how they accomplish is convincingly detailed in the book.The subtitle “In Search of a Better Life” accurately describes the author’s view-point and tone. An immigrant to the US who arrived from Finland eight years ago, now in love with the country of her adoption, she is also proud of her heritage. Rightly so, the Nordic countries have been consistently top-ranked as the happiest. Essentially the Nordic theory of love offers care for its people from prenatal life to retirement and old age in such ways that their citizens do not have to worry about money at every stage of their lives, like American citizens do. Heavy on footnotes (over 300) and bibliography, Anu Partanen presents a carefully detailed comparison of all aspects of life in the U.S., particularly education and health care, at the same time as she exults in her American citizenship. Down-to-earth, almost conversational, this book is a must-read for anyone who mistakenly dismisses the Nordic countries as "socialist" without understanding how their systems really work.

The Nordic Theory of Everything is an eye opening comparison of the socio-economic structures supporting (or not supporting) the Nordic nations (primarily the author's home country of Finland) and the current United States, by a writer whose life has bridged both worlds. I was always under the impression that things were better in the Nordic countries in terms of health care, child care, parental leave, education, and so on, but it was utterly shocking to read this book and learn how much better off it is there, and how backwards it is here in America. The author builds her case with both statistics and anecdotes that put a human face on the statistics. She also corrects the assumption that taxes are higher there, in fact tax rates are about the same but there are policies in place to make things like the cost of health care much lower than it is here (the state negotiates for lower drug prices, there's less administrative overhead, lower doctor salaries, and so on).The quality of Nordic public education is already well known and could be emulated here, without the American mania for vouchers, scam for profit charter schools and the like that are based on ideology and nothing more. The key seems to be having better training and pay for teachers.As America barrels recklessly toward drastic cuts to social programs like health care, public school education, the social safety net, and worker benefits, this book is well worth reading to see how there is another, better way.I would love to see this book reach a wide audience. It would make a great movie along the lines of "An Inconvenient Truth". Truly a must read book for America right now.

According to my great niece (Sophie) that I buy all the books for, loved it. She looks forward to reading books and with Amazon they state the age groups (6-8) so I never have a problem picking out a book. Saves a lot of time. Actually she brought some of them to school to show her teacher and class. The teacher was impressed and asked where she got them and she replied, My Auntie Jann and of course Amazon....there are so many to choose from!

This was a fun book. My grandkids loved it but of course they love all the Froggy books. My grand-daughter really liked the shirt that the dad wore in this book. She said he was more grown up as a dad. After reading this book, we always analize the book to see what Froggy could have done better to not have so many problems. There are always learning situations in these books. Always enjoyable books.

my 6 year old is a pretty fluent reader and he loves all the Froggy books. We were so excited to find a reader version. This book is great, my son loves it but it includes words like "kayaking and tetherball" so your reader may need help.

I brought this book for my granddaughter. She loves it. And I enjoyed reading it. I ordered three additional Froggy books.

This has to be one of the best Froggy books. It is so cute and the pictures are great. Froggy had his mind made up that he wanted a dog, but his Mom wanted him to get another type of animal. good learning too about taking care of a dog. Must have.

My son LOVES the Froggy collection. The stories are really cute, although repetitive. But this is great for younger kids.

What can I say? I first found out about the Froggy books when I was substituting in the local elementary school Media Center. I saw how raptly the children listened and how they all ran up afterwards to try to check the book out for themselves. Since that time I have bought most of the series to read to my granddaughter, Emily, who loves them. She especially loves the part where one of the characters calls out "F-R-O-G-G-Y!!". Each time I finish reading one of these books, Emily immediately says "Again." That's enough for me!

There are not a lot of books out there on VA Beach or the Hampton Roads. Believe me, I've looked. Most travel guides concentrate on the state of Virginia as a whole and information on the Hampton Roads area is pretty sparse.This is why I am thankful for this book. "The Insider's Guide to Virginia Beach" is actually much more than just a travel guide to Virginia Beach. It covers the entire Hampton Roads region including the cities of Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk and Portsmouth as well as the Chesapeake Bay. Topics covered include the area's overview and history, restaurants, accommodations, shopping, attractions (including kid-friendly activities), recreation, daytrips, real estate and neighborhoods, schools, healthcare and more. At over 300 pages, it is packed with useful information that you just won't find in your standard Virginia travel book.I highly recommend this book to travelers who want to concentrate on the Hampton Roads/Virginia Beach area or those who are planning to relocate there. There are no detailed maps and very little tourist type info. Despite the title, this book covers a much larger area than just Virginia Beach. The restaurant guide is very good, and it is obvious that considerable effort was expended in compiling all of this information. If you are considering a move to Virginia Beach, this is an excellent resource. Otherwise, another travel guide that includes Virginia Beach would probably be a better bet.

The main reason I am giving this 3/5 stars is that I was expecting it to walk the reader through the process of creating a flat pattern. A more appropriate description would be that it can be used as a supplement for those who already know how to do it. I have some informal experience and thus found certain sections useful (designing collars, dart manipulation, sleeve variations). However, you need a sloper before you can begin - thus it is not complete. The author provides some resources on where you can get some materials for this - but there is no instruction on how to actually create the flat pattern. This seems a little manipulative given the title. I was also disappointed that the dart manipulation section was very short and included just a few options. It had some useful elements so I did not return it - but this is not really a resource book or one that beginners will find very helpful -- and it's relatively brief.

I like the ideas on how to alter the pattern because I am always curious, but I would have liked to see the basic bodice, skirt and pants in the small scale at the end of the book. I enjoy reviewing it over and over so I am happy with my "Designing Clothes with the Flat Pattern Method." Thank you Amazon for making it available. The the process was great, fast delivery and excellent quality of the product.

I have not read the book as of yet due to my busy schedule. I bought it as a reference book. I have all of Sara's classes on Craftsy.com and find her to be an enthusiastic teacher and expect her book will have good visual aids to assist my efforts in sewing,.

If you sew garment, you need this book!! I use the flat pattern method, and love this as a resource.

I thought there would be sample cut outs in the book. Overall, I like the book to add to my collection.

Makes sewing a lot more fun.

Great instruction for a beginner designer

OMG. This is amazing. I never dreamed I could make my own patterns and explore the types of clothing I like the most. I am so excited. Not sure what to start with yet. I know I will hit all the chapters which have every category covered: skirts, tops, dresses, pants, etc. I will post a photo of my first finished item. This book really empowers you to go for it and be a little wild too.

Easter isn't about candy and my kid didn't buy it when I was telling him this- but the good ol' Bernstein Bears taught him that Easter is about the fact that JESUS IS ALIVE. When I was trying to explain it myself, I was focusing too much on the death and crucifixion. This book helps young kids focus on the resurrection- what Easter is truly about. I'd repurchase this book 100 times over. We read it every morning and every night just before bed.

Super cute book and we love the Berenstain bears. My only complaint is that the end of the book doesn't tie in the plan of salvation with the resurrection. It just kind of leaves you hanging by saying something to the effect of "it just means that on Easter morning after you get your Easter baskets and candy, you will come to church and learn more about Jesus". I had to improvise the ending and add how Easter is really all about celebrating the resurrection of Jesus (when Jesus came back to life after dying on the cross) and how it proves He is God and if we believe in Him with all our heart and repent of our sins He will save us and bring us to heaven someday with Him. Candy, gift-giving and Easter baskets are just a small part of the celebration (just like at Christmas how we give gifts in honor of celebrating the birth of our Savior).

So I was looking for a good Easter story to read to my children. This book was more for K who is 9 rather than A who is 3.I didn't realize that the Berenstain books had some religion in them, I grew up reading these books and have never seen this in a story before. That did not turn me away from it as I wanted K to learn what Easter was really about but in a way that he would understand. This was perfect for that because Easter is just not about candy it is about Jesus and him raising from the dead three days later. This book did a wonderful job with describing the meaning of Easter and K had a few questions but not too many.Now it says there is a sticker set with this book I bought the ebook and there was no sticker set included so do not expect that with the ebook but more for the paperback.Now if you are not big into religion then this book will not be for you, if you are introducing your child/ren or are big into religion and want something read this will be good for you.K's questions and answers.Did you like the story? "Yes I did"Did you understand the story being told? "Yes it was about Jesus and not having candy."Would you read this book again? "Yes only at Easter."Would you recommend this book to your friends? "I think my friends would like this because they can learn about Jesus."

This is a nice Easter book for children. The only thing that kind of surprised me was the story of Easter and the other related characters including Jesus are all portrayed by bears. Usually in children's books I have found that Jesus and the related characters to his story are human, no matter the usual characters to a particular themed book.

Perfect to tell the story of Easter!

Brother, Sister and Honey Bear are dreaming/thinking/focused on all the different types of Easter candy even in Sunday school. When 'challenged' by the teacher to tell the rest of the class what else Easter is about there is a lot of head scratching! All they come up with are the words, "Bible Stuff"! It's time to learn some more! First step is to go to the class next door to watch the play The Easter Story.Yes, this book is Christian based providing the true account of the first Easter when Jesus died on the cross and rose again. Yes, it is scans of the original paperback book so five of the pages have double text showing the original text in the picture along with the separate, readable text. This book is VERY readable on the Kindle as the text has been typed in separately from the images. I'm just guessing that some of the original picture book texts could not be cropped enough so had to be left in.At the end of the book there are some activities and questions. Great book for those who enjoy the Berenstain Bears and want their children to grasp the true meaning of Easter. Thanks, Liz

PERFECT book for our kiddos. Talks about both the real meaning of easter, as well as the candy aspect of it. We used this to help us tell the story and bridge the gap with our 4 year old. very happy with this purchase.

I was looking for a book that would help explain the reason we celebrate Easter, and this was perfect. It was not overly detailed ( such as children's Bible story books), many that I looked at went into details of the betrayal, last supper , and crucifixion, which would be to have for my Kinder age child. This is a good intro before getting into those topics with them.

It's not the most exhaustive dictionary there is but it does have many rhymes in it. It has been of help at times, although a simple google search usually provides more help.

BOOK IS EXCELLENT, HAVE PREVIOUS EDITIONS, AND USE THEM ALOT. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO OTHERS AS WELL

I write sonnets, villanelles and song lyrics and, before I bought this book, I thought somehow that it was cheating to use rhymes that didn't come out of my own head. Well, phooey to that! Yes, I still do make a list of rhyming words first, but then I turn to this dictionary and - wow - the possiblities just open up!Some of the reviewers caution that you have to read the instructions/introductions first in order to figure out how this book works. Well, I plunged right in; as a matter of fact, when I later read the "how to's," their terminology confused and intimidated me. Just open it up and start messing around. That's what art is all about, anyhow.I love how the sections of rhyming words are arranged so that the one-syllable words come first, followed by the longer words. Many of the words were entirely unfamiliar to me and I was glad to have a regular ol' dictionary by my side. (I don't plan on using many of those arcane words, but those of us who love language always get a kick out a new word, eh?)Some reviewers noted that some words are missing. But please don't get your knickers in a knot over that; there are more than enough rhyming words in here to get you past the jump-start phase. And if you, as I do, generate your own word list beforehand, you will catch anything that's missing (or you will continue on with your life in blissful ignorance). Any reference volume is fallible; I say if you see something missing, please write the publisher so the oversight can be corrected.In short, a fun, fat and inspiring book. I am glad I decided to "cheat"!

I bought this compact handy little reference because I needed a rhyming dictionary. The price was right (inexpensive). Note that the words are drawn from Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Tenth Edition. It is crucial to use this book along with a standard dictionary. It is absolutely essential to read the preface to the book to understand how to use it and see if it is easy to use for a potential buyer of this book. This book has been useful to me but I have two issues with it: rhyming words are listed according to most common end-of-word spelling but also according to how it is pronounced (so, therefore, people in different parts of the country may say the same word differently). A word may rhyme with another word if you come from New York perhaps but not if you're from Texas, let's say. There are references after rhyming word lists to see other lists where a word may have more than one standard pronunciation and these variants often produce alternate rhyming sounds. Some words may appear on more than one list and not every word on a list will rhyme for every person (as the preface indicates). Also, it's useful as a potential user of this book to be famiiar with diacritical marks (those marks that indicate how to say the word (- for example, long or short vowel sound). If you are unfamiliar with diacritical marks or need a refresher, or you are uncomfortable with lots of cross-references, you may find this book a bit cumbersome to use at first until you get the hang of the layout. All of the words are gathered and arranged by their rhyming sounds. The main entries are arranged according to the way the rhyming sound is most commonly spelled represented by bold type face at the beginning of the main entries. Alternate spellings of the rhyming sounds are cross-referenced and the reference directs the user to the appropriate main entry. The entries for a rhyming sound are arranged alphabetically in a single sequence whether a main or alternate spelling, one-,two- or three-syllable word. A certain amount of linguistic knowledge is useful to enable the user to easily make use of the book - such as inflected and uninflected word forms, derived forms, and parts of speech. Not every word is included. Sometimes there are references to speech parts such as "present participles of words...". In such a case, it helps to know what a "present participle" is, for example.

A fun and informative reference book for everyone in your family to use. I had no idea a book like this even existed until Amazon.com recommended this book to me after I had purchased other reference books from their internet store. I thought this was only going to be used from time to time when someone needed to write a poem for school or to be silly but that certainly isn't true at all. Since purchasing this book I know I have used this book several times for writing a serious love letter to my loving wife to writing something funny in emails to friends. I have found this reference book more handy than I first thought and I am very pleased to have this book in my private library. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who has children, anyone who loves to write, anyone who enjoys surprising their significant-other with a special poem, anyone who enjoys writing music or anyone who has a silly heart who enjoys writing for the sake of writing !!!

A Silken Thread is a historical fiction that takes place in 1895 in Atlanta during the International Cotton Exposition. Eighteen year old Laurel Miller has been told by her older siblings that she must stay home and be responsible for taking care of their mother in her old age. But Laurel wants something more and gets a job at the Exposition as a silk weaver to hopefully meet a wealthy man so that she can have a family and take care of her mother too. Langdon Rochester has been told by his father that he must settle down and get married or else he will loose his inheritance. He goes to the Exposition to "work" at his father's booth and try to find a lady to marry that will please his mother but still allow him to live his life the way he wants to.Willie Sharp takes a job as a security guard at the Exposition in order to pay for his father to go to a hospital to recover from a stroke. His best friend is a black man named Quincy who also gets a job at the Exposition. Quincy and Willie have been best friends their whole lives and never considered the differences in their races until the Exposition. The Civil War had taken place around 30 years before, and tensions were still running high. Trouble comes to the Women's Building at the Exposition and Willie and Quincy have to deal with issues in their friendship they've never had to before.One of the reasons that I love Kim Vogel Sawyer's books so much is because you can tell when reading her books that she puts a lot of time and effort into her research to make it authentic. When you are reading her books, you will feel as though you are transported back in time and a part of the story you are reading. The characters are amazing. Even the minor characters are real and believable and are an important part of the story. The challenges and struggles they face are things that we can relate to. In A Silken Thread, Ms. Sawyer tackles the difficult topic of racism, and it is done very well ,with grace and dignity. There is a romantic element to the story that I loved and appreciate that Kim Vogel Sawyer's books are not overly romantic. You do not have to worry about any inappropriate content. As always Ms. Sawyer weaves elements of faith throughout the book and we learn so much about trusting in God, seeking His will, the importance of doing the right thing even when it is hard, and that anything, even a new suit bought for the wrong reason, can bring about good in someone's life.Even though I loved the main characters in this book, one of my favorite characters was Mr. Rochester, Langdon's father. He is a very wealthy man but he wants his son to work hard and tries to teach him the importance of good character. Willie is just a factory worker but he knows him and trusts him and stands up for him even when others including his own son gave reason to doubt him.He has good reason to be very angry with his son but instead forgives and tells him he is proud of the good thing he has done. It reminded me of the love our Heavenly Father has for us.A Silken Thread taught me many things I didn't know or really think about during this time in history.
