Great artwork from the man who painted your favorite monsters!! Mr. Gogos passed last September and I was able to speak to him the prior April at an appearance. I grew up reading Famous Monsters magazine and loved his work. This book, though not super detailed in his life, is very much a treasure to my past and what I will enjoy for years to come.

Can you imagine having the brains and brushstrokes to produce not only recreations of your favorite movie monsters, but to instill in them a personality unique to the artist. Look long enough and you think they are looking right back at you. They are a horror in themselves. He gives them life. And think that anytime a new horror feature or sci fi movie hits the screens you could just do as he does and pick up the brush and translate the propagandist to canvas. Can you imagine being able to do such work with scenes from your favorite films or books.I agree this should have been more Encyclopedic. I would be glad to spend 3 times the cost for a complete volume set. If I could steal one thing in this world, it would be Basil Gogos talent.

Like many who have reviewed this book, I grew up with Famous Monsters of Filmland, and was really looking forward to getting this book because of the fabulous artwork of Basil Gogos that I remember so well. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed - with a title like "Famous Monster Movie Art of Basil Gogos", one would expect (at least I did) that it would concentrate on his well-known covers of monster and horror magazines, specifically Famous Monsters of Filmland, for which he is best known by many. Instead, a good portion of the book is devoted to his wildlife, western, military, adventure, and whatnot work. It would have been more accurate to call it "The Art of Basil Gogos", not the "Famous Monster Movie Art of Basil Gogos". Also, many of his Famous Monsters of Filmland cover art paintings are cropped - not a whole lot usually, but when compared with the actual magazine covers it's obvious (again, to me at least) that they have been cropped, and I just cannot understand why they would do this. And lastly, a good number of the covers are small, some very small, and are reproductions of the actual FMOF covers, not his actual paintings used to create those covers. Don't get me wrong, I'm still glad I got the book, the quality of the reproductions are great, and it's better than not having a book of his art. But they could have, and should have, done a much better job.

Basil is the anchor of my childhood horror memories. The Covers of Famous Monsters were his soapbox and he was heard around the world. Basil has a way of using colors to give black and while celluloid a voice. I went to Indianapolis to the relaunch of Famous Monsters and got to meet Basil. He was a wonderful man who was more than happy and enthusiastic to whittle away the time talking to a monster kid like me. Basil took the time to look at my art portfolio as I explained how I learned to paint my aurorakits to look like his artwork. Basil has hit the circuit of monster conventions. If you get the chance go meet him and thank him for your childhood of fear!!

One of the most magnificent illustrators of the 20th century. All of us growing up in the '60s who were dyed in the wool FM fans remember dear Basil. I grew up reading Famous Monsters and remember some of these covers. Read this book in one sitting, if you love the classic universal monsters you will love this book. Brought back great memories of sneaking. My magazines in to grade school to read with my friends. The art work in this book is great.

Even without text, this book would've earned 4 stars, just for the impressiveness of Gogos' work. Within this book are large, crystal-clear repros of his most famous monster cover paintings, as well as samples of his illustration work.The only setback for this book is its lack of depth in the text. It seems that whoever was sent to interview Basil didn't ask too many questions, didn't want to really know too much about him except for his general acheivements, and didn't ask him for a demonstration of how he works. Among all of the great pics, some candid ones of the artist would've been nice, most notably a pic of his studio.Still, the images are so rich in color and character. Worth it!

About the Author

J. Alan Childs grew up in southern California playing sports and moved his family in Minnesota in 1992. Of all places in the world, the state of hockey beaconed his kids to start playing lacrosse. Together the family of five lacrosse kids started the local lacrosse community program in Burnsville, which led to traveling to other lacrosse communities across the United States and Canada. The family number is 7, which is the jersey number all the kids wore when playing hockey and lacrosse. The Flamethrower series started as a comic book Brody Childs wrote in 2007 as a summer project. (Brody is the youngest of the five kids, others are Courtney, Cory, Jace, and Bailey) Dad(Alan) took the comic story and wrote the first Flamethrower book in 2010. Then as book two was started the research in Canada led to a newspaper headline, “Winnipeg welcomes the Champions of the United States, St. Paul Lacrosse Club.” This headline led to the discovery of an amazing story of early lacrosse in the state of Minnesota so the next book Minnesota Lacrosse: A History was written to tell that fun non-fiction story. The book is fine as a basic introduction. There's no deep dives into script writing in Roblox. As a developer myself, I wanted something that I could get use out of and so would my son. Since the TOC had a chapter called "Advanced Scripting," I thought this would cover my needs.What I expected was something like an SDK walkthrough - some tutorials and deep dives into the various methods/functions avail. in the Roblox SDK. Sadly... the "advanced" section is what would be called a beginners guide to programming. "This is a loop...." etc. Again, great for a younger audience. I'd prob. buy this for my 7 year old son.A lot of basic usefulness... but no deep dives.

Like any popular video game, a lot of books are being written about Roblox. This one is the best. Period.The guides and images are so helpful that even young kids can learn a ton in just a couple of minutes. Other books about this game seem rushed and poorly written. But this author clearly put in effort and cared about the final product. This is a must buy if you really want to help your kids get the most out of their Roblox experience.

Roblox is my 10 year-old's favorite game. It's age appropriate and spurs on creativity, so we play it together and enjoy building our worlds. It's become quite the bonding experience, but as he learns more about the game, the more questions he has for me. This book has become an invaluable guide, written simply enough for a 10-year old to pull information out of it, but retains a sense of intuitiveness that helps me tackle some of the more in-depth aspects of the game. If your child (or you) plays this game, this book is a must have.

Present for Christmas ordered with other items arrived bend at front cover at the bottom of the box book looks new but maybe should have ordered separately

My son LOVES the content of this book, and it has been very helpful info for learning all about Roblox. He got his first copy at Christmas and the pages started just falling out. The binding used so little glue it just self destructed. The publisher replaced it, and sure enough the replacement is falling apart. Bad construction by the book maker, but excellent writing by the author.

The pictures of Shakespeare gardens in the United State and England are lovely and inspiring. I was disappointed that the garden at the Huntington Library in San Marino, CA was not included, as it was the first such garden I ever visited, but that is just a personal observation. The section on plants that are typically used in a Shakespeare garden was very helpful and I am using the entire book to plot out a tiny garden in my back yard.

Both the photography and information are great. The contents gave me more substance than I expected. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in historical gardens.

Oh, the British... can't cook... but they sure can GARDEN! Just when you thought Shakespeare's been overexposed ad nauseum et infinitum, you learn some surprising 'new' facts about his life that... that... wait for it... has nothing to do with a drop of ink from his plume (not directly, anyway). Amazingly, these plants are still here. TODAY!As William the Bard would have written, "Wow!" or "Woweth!"Definitely worth another trip to London.
