About the Author

Gena K. Gorrell is a book editor and an award-winning writer of nonfiction for young people. Her third book, Heart and Soul: The Story of Florence Nightingale, won the Norma Fleck Award for Nonfiction. In her spare time she is a first-aid instructor and a volunteer officer in the Toronto Police Marine Unit. She lives in Toronto with her husband and her dog.Andrej Krystoforski was born in Poland during World War II. After earning a master’s degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, he began working as an illustrator and designer. Several years after receiving an art scholarship from the Kosciusko Foundation in New York, he emigrated to the United States. Andrej won many national and international awards before moving to Canada, where his interest in animation led to his involvement in the creation of many television shows and features including Pippi Longstocking, Heidi, Seven Little Monsters, Little Bear, Bob and Margaret, and Max and Ruby. Today, Andrej Krystoforski lives in Canada, creating children’s and young adult book illustrations.

Photos are beautiful.....and the narration makes me want to go to South America to see all these fascinating places. I bought this for a student who likes non-fiction and has to read a book about Latin America. This 8th grader describes herself as someone who doesn't like to read, and even she has enjoyed it.

I read it quickly and promptly donated it.Lacks depth, but then, it was probably written for a traveler who will not spend much time in S. America.

Good book for school

This book goes against christian principles. It makes the natives who poured out their own neighbors blood out to be innocent. It makes it out like the Spanish were devils from hell. It has multiple chapters on Evolution, and Darwin's enlightenment.I do understand that most of the Spanish were greedy, but you have to understand that the Spanish saw the natives for what they were, and they were afraid of them. I do understand that not all the natives were bad. Some weren't, but most were. But Darwin and his theory is just wrong. It has been tested and found wanting, and yet we still teach it as real truth. For one we have not found one real missing link that isn't made up of monkey/human bones from some old cave. For two scientists have tested the million year old theory and it doesn't hold water. The sun would be older and redder.I never intend to open this piece of garbage ever again.

This is your basic introductory book on paleontology intended for first-year college students. Much of the information it covers is fairly basic, though I did encounter fun tidbits of information I didn't know about every once in awhile. What really makes this book stand out, however, are its full-color diagrams and photographs. The outline and organization of the book make it easy to read, and the bolded vocabulary words would be helpful to a student learning about paleontology. I think it is one of the best Kindle books about paleontology out right now, especially considering its mixed-media format and the low listing price. My only wish is that the chapter on Reptiles (and dinosaurs in general) would be much longer, as this is a popular topic. Otherwise, this is an excellent book about paleontology I would recommend to general readers.

These are questions that Silence and Beauty puts persons, places, and images to as Makoto Fujimura draws us into his own journey of personalizing Endo's novel Silence. In so doing, Makoto gently stirs up the reader's own reflections and inner conflicts related to the hiddenness, ambiguity, and beauty of what he calls fumi-e culture, so captivatingly and mystically expressed in Silence (and yes, you should read Endo's novel before this book). Silence and Beauty does much to frame and contextualize the times that the novel describes, translates it into Endo's times, and ultimately reveals relevance to our own. Perhaps Makato says it best on page 165: "In a world where religious freedom is increasingly considered a frontline issue, we will do well to learn from the multifaceted stories that Endo crafted to deal with such a time as ours". Makato proves that art can inform faith, and gives us a timely message of true, deep, and lasting encouragement for those open to receiving it.I hardly ever post a product review, but this book inspires my heartfelt recommendation.

Silence by Shusaku Endo is one of those books that is not easily forgotten. I read it a couple years ago and I rarely go more than a couple weeks without referencing it.Makoto Fujimura is a very well known artist, famous in many Evangelical circles for being a famous artist that is well known outside of Christian circles. Fujimura grew up in the US, but after college was accepted into a Japanese graduate program to study art. The first student to ever be accepted into this graduate program that did not grow up through the Japanese national art system. Fujimura became a Christian while studying art in Japan, a country with a very low rate of Christians.Silence and Beauty is an interesting book. It opens with a bit is spiritual memoir. Fujimura details how Shusaku Endo and his book Silence impacted his early faith. And unsurprisingly there is a long exploration of both Endo and Silence. That is done in the context of a rich sociological and historical study of Japan. And all of that is wrapped up in a defense of beauty and art as essential to Christianity. (I was reminded at times of of Francis Spufford's Unapologetic and Brian Zhand's Beauty Will Save the World.)At this point, this is the best books I have read this year. I have not previously read anything by Fujimura. But I will read more. I have ordered Silence so I can re-read it. (Silence is not available on kindle, and I previously listened to the audiobook, so I have ordered the paperback.) Once I am done I am going to re-read Silence and Beauty again. I am not going to detail the book much more this time, but will write another review later.As a note, this is a nicely designed hardcover book. There is a velum looking dustcover and several pages of color art in the middle of the book. I was encouraged to pick up the Hardcover, and I am glad I did to see the full color art. But I purchased the Kindle edition Sunday when it was released so I can highlight the many passages that I wanted to highlight. The Kindle edition has the same art, but the art is in line with the book where the images are talked about instead of being gathered together in the middle of the book. If you view the images on a tablet they are full color. But obviously, if they are viewed on an eink Kindle, they will be in black and white.

The story of how this book came to be is just as interesting as the book itself. Its title and inspiration come from Shusaku Endō’s 1966 novel Silence, about a Portuguese Jesuit who goes on a mission to Japan in the 17th century and faces the terrible choice of either recanting his faith or, if he does not recant, watching Japanese Christians endure brutal torture. If you haven’t read Silence yet, I highly recommend that you do so before diving into Silence and Beauty; however, Makoto Fujimura does include a synopsis of the novel at the end of his book to provide some context. Or…now that Martin Scorsese’s film adaptation is out, you can go see the movie. It’s an excellent adaptation, true to the novel’s themes, and therefore very difficult to watch, but well worth at least one viewing.Silence and Beauty relates Japanese-American artist Makoto Fujimura’s experience of becoming a Christian while in Japan studying nihonga, a traditional style of Japanese painting. Although these subjects may seem unrelated, Fujimura’s study of traditional Japanese art exposed him to the history of Christianity in Japan through his discovery of the fumi-e. Fumi-e (“stepping images”) are relief depictions of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary that the Tokugawa shogunate ordered suspect Japanese to trample on; those who refused to trample were identified as Christians and tortured. This discovery led Fujimura to Endō’s novel, in which the fumi-e are a prominent element of the plot. Years later, a conversation with Martin Scorsese about his film adaptation of Silence inspired Fujimura to write a book using Endō’s novel as a framework for reflections on his own experience with Christianity and Japanese culture.As a bilingual Japanese-American who has lived in Japan and the United States and shares Endō’s Christian faith, Fujimura is uniquely qualified to discuss both the cultural and religious aspects of Silence in a way that Western readers can understand. His commentary offers rare insight on how Japanese culture influenced the shape of Christianity in Japan and how Christianity, in turn, continues to shape Japanese culture to this day. I had never thought of Christianity having any significant influence on Japanese culture, as less than one percent of Japanese are Christians. Fujimura admits his is a “radical notion,” but it is certainly intriguing: “Endō …wrote in a country haunted by Christ, and this historical mark, like the footprints in the wooden frames of a fumi-e, remains indelible—but it is concealed, hidden within the Japanese psyche; this explains the psychological and sociological reality that affects Japan today. Further, I present here the most radical notion: Japan is still a Christ-hidden culture, haunted by the past, with a developed sense of hiding well what is most important. Endō, an archaeologist of cultural trauma, begins to dip into the mud, scooping up the elements of broken shards of the culture of Christianity in Japan, and discovers, in my mind, the essential beauty and humanity of Japan.”Silence and Beauty is highly illuminating to the themes in Endō’s novel and to the more subtle aspects of Japanese culture I was not aware of. Fujimura also sheds light on the life of Shusaku Endō, drawing from memoirs and interviews to interpret the author’s motivation and inspiration for writing Silence, which I found especially fascinating. If you want to understand more about Silence, its author Shusaku Endō, the mysterious relationship between Japanese culture and Christianity in Japan, or at least one of the above, you can’t have a better guide than Makoto Fujimura.

Saying they gave us the toothbrush and crankshaft isn't real earth shattering.To quote many people saying Mohammed was a prophet of peace and love is also a weak argument in light of many other books about Mohammed.I agree that the United States has been to blame for supporting oppressive regimes around the world giving fuel for ISIS and Ben Ladens. I usually don't have to write about the quality of the book itself vs the contents, but it's important to realize that the book's first page started off talking about a children's coloring book, and then starts on the random page number and continues on without any real structure / contents. There may be chunks of the book missing from the print edition, or this just might be the way the book is. After I read the book in 30 minutes, I suspected the high reviews - several other reviewers here have dead profiles and have only ever rated this book. The physical book also has hyperlinks in it (eg. "Check out *this* site to read more.") which is a bit annoying. It seems like the book was originally Kindle only and then as an afterthought was self published in a very hurried manner.The book's contents are good though, but not detailed enough that you can actually accomplish many of the suggestions he's laid out in the book. A true beginner will get lost on the AdWords site and unfortunately there's not a single (grainy) picture of the AdWords site to help guide anyone around.I'm torn though, the information is good, which is worth something for sure, but it's no more detailed, explained better, or more organized than any blog would be on the subject.

Great for beginners to understand Google Adowrds and create ad campaigns.easy to read and more importantly easy to implement. Its all very clever and easy to implement. I am impressed by being able to get this as an ebook or simillar so it can be viewed particularly as a reminder every so often.This book by Corey has helped me understand the basics of Google AdWords. Now my campaigns are working better and the overall return on investment has been much better. In a nutshell, if you are a business owner like me and would like to take control of your paid online promotion using Google AdWords...then this book is a must for you.

AdWords is not easy for anyone I think to understand but Corey Rabazinski sure did a good job getting the job done make the subject matter as easy as possible to grasp for a novice like myself. It gave me much better handle on the topic then I ever thought. Certainly worth the few dollars spent.

AdWords is a powerful tool for connecting g a product or service with buyers, and not merely shoppers. Rabazinski does a great job of demystefying the seemingly illusive nature of AdWords. He presents concepts in language that can be easily understood by beginners who lack a strong technical background. Highly recommended.

Jens Müller was born in Koblenz, Germany, in 1982 and studied graphic design. Recipient of numerous national and international design awards, Müller is Creative Director of Optik design studio in Düsseldorf, editor of the A5 book series on graphic design history, and author of Logo Modernism. Taschen does it again with another solid compendium of the visually striking and often sublimely subtle world of ad media and design. Both volume 1 and now 2 are excellent for following the evolution of some truly genius designs, and how each period within the last century really had some game changing, and often radical ideas about getting a message across and nearly universally understood.If an item appears to be so simple that anyone could have come up with it; these books say "then why haven't they?" There would definitely be more volumes if it were the case.

From the content to the quality of the printing. I bought both volumes for my kid, who’s studying graphic design.

At last, the second volume to Taschen's in-depth look at graphic design. This edition covers the years from 1960 to 2017 with 3500 images (2500 in volume one) and the format is the same as the first book. Each decade has a brief introduction then an illustrated timeline spread followed by the graphics. The range of material is wide, obviously all kinds of printed material but also paper currency, stamps, film credits, packaging, logos, signage, and a feature I particularly liked: spreads devoted to a single subject, mostly this is designers from around the world with samples of their work but also, for example, city branding, pc icons, early web pages, 3D logos, there are seventy-eight of these single item spreads.This book covers the introduction of computer design software and there's an obvious shift from the early nineties onwards with graphics revealing a much more fluid look as designers could do anything they liked with just a few keystrokes. The previous hundred years or so of design discipline created by the limitations of process work and printing evaporated remarkably quickly so that now, visually, anything goes.The two volumes tip the scales at eight kilos with a big page size of thirty-seven centimetres by twenty-four, beautifully laid out and printed on a reasonable matt art. Two books with six thousand illustrations, it's a remarkably creative look.

I also own Volume 1 and this one is equally wonderful. It's also huge and quite heavy, unsurprisingly - and as with the other volume, it's filled with beautiful graphics. The printing process and the selection are again really great.
