Wanjiru M. Gitau (PhD, Africa International University) is a research fellow at the Center for Religion and Civic Culture at the University of Southern California, pursuing a multi-year global research project commissioned by the John Templeton World Charity Foundation on contemporary religion. She is a Kenyan educated in Nairobi, Edinburgh, and the United States, with extensive global experience, including research projects from Korea to Kentucky. She formerly served on the staffs of Nairobi Chapel and Mavuno Church.

This is a groundbreaking work, giving the global Church an in depth and intelligent look inside the Megachurch through a very important Nairobi story. Rarely are you afforded the opportunity to read an academic work from someone who was in the story itself, and yet able to remain objective. This is brilliant.

This is a delightfully readable, yet thoughtful, account of Nairobi Chapel and Mavuno Church, and the many "daughter" churches they've launched, both within Kenya and beyond, comes from someone who is both a scholar and an early participant in the explosive growth. Her main point in writing is to ask "why" churches like this have taken root, especially with the Millennial generation. Her answer is that megachurches have helped dislocated generations make sense of their changing and sometimes alienating world through the power of the Gospel.

I've just read chapter 3. It's fantastic! In fact, I also just texted my pastor and his brother-in-law, who's on staff at our church, suggesting that our leadership read and reflect on it. My church, Fountain of Live Covenant Church, is a dozen years old and in its teenage stage. We're a smallish (for California standards), urban multi-ethnic church in an area known as a church graveyard in Long Beach. We're building out leadership structure and have been going through the hard work of extending decision-making to a team, rather than having everything fall on the lead pastor. So many of the things Gitau writes about resonate with our experience, albeit scaled down to a 250-person church. I noted the Simama class, having frequently thought that we've just got to provide some kind of guidance or training or formation for people with deep trauma in their backgrounds. I am so grateful she has written this book. Yet another example of the African church leading the American church these days!It occurs to me, too, how layered this conversation about contextualization, indigenization, and pilgrimage is. For instance, there will be ways in which the Mavuno experience is different from the FOL experience: Most obviously, the one is Kenyan, the other American. And yet, the urban and millenial contexts make for striking parallels. My guess is Mavuno and FOL have strikingly similarities and would in some ways seem more similar than, say, a rural church in Kenya is to Mavuno or a rural church in America is to FOL. So much to think about here...

As I read the the multiple critical reviews bemoaning the author's "bias" against Lenin/Bolsheviks/Communist regime/etc. I simply substitute "Ted Bundy" or "Pol Pot" or "Hitler" or the "Apartheid regime of South Africa" or "Charles Manson". The review then reveals the moral weltanschaung of the reviewer in high relief: "Hey, murderous & genocidal sociopaths need love too."As for conjecture of one negative reviewer that "Pipes would have preferred the corrupt and autocratic Czar still be in power today": Anyone with historical understanding would agree that most of the Absolute Monarchies of Europe & Russia had a great deal of corruption -- as do almost ALL governing institutions throughout human history. And they would agree that a modern person (or an emancipated American of any era) would not likely choose to live under Absolute Monarchy. But a clear Red Line in the Sand can be drawn between the corrupt & autocratic monarchies typifying most of human history vs the GENOCIDAL 20th century communist governments responsible for the deaths of tens & tens of millions of their own people. Lenin & the early Bolsheviks pioneered the model and worked assiduously to spread it globally.For those whose moral worldview does not permit them to understand the difference, European scholars have written "The Black Book of Communism" to thoroughly document this history: The Black Book of Communism: Crimes, Terror, Repression

Brilliant. Astonishing scope. For example, what was happening under the new Bolshevik government as WWI drew to a close. The big surprise for me was that the Bolsheviks were just one of numerous Soviets and the way ahead was very much by way of the ballot box, which Lenin did everything to subvert. He packed the various committees, threw out legitimate results when they didn’t go his way, and threatened people with death if they voted against him. The whole story is enormously complex, but Pipes illuminates it by way of a rigorous use of the archival documents. In that respect he reminds me of Simon Sebag Montifiore.

This, the second volume in the authors trilogy, is a detailed description of a relatively brief period. Even so, some events are left to the third volume, consequently sacrificing some sense of chronology. For anyone interested in Russia this book and its companions are an excellent resource. My only reason for laying the book down occasionally was that I needed time to digest the surfeit of information. For example, the reasons for the murder of the royal family were fully explained. The story, though familiar, was made more shocking and reasonable from the Bolshevik point of view. The thesis that the Russian government was indeed patrimonial was further proven by Lenin's concern that the family could serve as a rallying point. Perhaps the chaotic character of events is well defined by the fact that I was left confused concerning things like Kerensky's failure, Rasputin's role, and the Bolshevik view of the peasants. Evidently the author's opinion that there was a Bolshevik coup, not a revolution, is now generally accepted. The book naturally leads the reader into the third volume. I am glad that I read it.

... And, to some limited extent, explained. Disturbingly, similarities to current political activity cannot be ignored. When academic fantasy displaces reality as the foundation of government action, collective insanity is unavoidable.

Even though Pipes covers over 300 years of the Romanov dynasty, he manages to inject an immense amount of intimate detail that reads more like a novel than dry history. His thematic approach is a bit confusing at times and he spends more time on the architecture of St. Petersburg than I thought necessary, but this is a work by a man who clearly loves his subject. Any serious student of Russia MUST read it.

Richard Pipes is a magnificent historian. I've both read his History of Communism and Russia Under the Bolsheviks. His treatment of the Russian Revolution is superb. In my opinion, it's the only book you need to read if you're unfamiliar with the subject. He's almost 90 years old but his perspective remains invaluable concerning the dysfunction of that massive prison state aka the USSR. He's a fine writer and its actually a page turner. The first 200 pages or so outline the dynamics of Tsarist Russia. Much of this I had forgotten from college so it was valuable to me. I've always wondered how the Okhrana allowed the revolution to occur given their reputation. It's interesting to contemplate how any Tsar's policies could have saved the Romanov dynasty. Most probably, the decisions of 1905 are what doomed Tsar Nicholas. Additionally, I know understand why Peter Stolypin is considered one of the greatest Russians in history. During his years, the normal Russian citizen had more freedom than they ever had before or since (at least up until 1990).

This was an invaluable volume for helping me get through law school, and the bar exam. The compact size was really very important: I could (and did) carry it around with me everywhere, in the days before e-books were an option. It continues to be my first choice 20 years after graduating law school. In short, if you need a definition for citation purposes, you probably will (and should) use Black's Law Dictionary. But in order to understand the actual terms, use this volume.For anyone buying a law dictionary for those going to law school (admittedly, a dwindling number), Black's is the more spectacular gift. This Barron's dictionary, however, will be the more useful of the two

I sampled three popular law dictionaries for Kindle (1) Law Dictionary, (Mass Market) 6th Ed. (Barron's Legal Guides) , (2) Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of Law, and (3) Nolo's Plain-English Law Dictionary. By far, the best I'd seen is Barron's. Among other things, instant search is enabled, and there are hotlinks to related terms. Webster's is next (it's got hotlinks, but shows only one definition per page). Nolo is the worst; it's like all they did was convert the text.Major problem with Barron's: can't search by keywords. Searches bring up index entries only.

A Law Dictionary is absolutely necessary if you study law or you work in the area of law or have anything to do with law. This book is outstanding in understanding terms which otherwise would be Greek to me. Law terms take on new meanings when you understand what is really being said. One word can have nine different concepts and this Law Dictionary will make sure you understand each of those different concepts. This is an excellent reference and a total necessity if you are involved in the study of work in the area of law.

Every law student needs a copy of this book. I keep it in my backpack and probably use it every day, if not to look up a word/phrase for the first time but to reinforce my understanding of certain concepts. (I'm a 1L at the moment.)Also, some professors at my University do not allow electronics in their classroom; I am able to look up concepts that most can't because they can not get online!

I wanted to provide a graduating undergraduate mentee with practical resources for law school as a graduation gift. I ordered this and The Bluebook. While she hasn't yet used either book, as a law professor, I am confident she will get good use out of both. While I am a fan of Black's Law Dictionary, it is not a practical resource for a law student on the go. This is a fictional resource for that use.

Is easy to navigate and comes in handy.

I am a beginner to learning constitutional law for my high school studies. This book contains all of the terms that I have so far come aross. Easy to carry around.

Strong lines and somewhat primitive shapes create easily recognized species of animals and plants. The characters' expressions vary from pleasant to fierce. Even before the birds' transformation, the world is full of color. The treatment of the sky is particularly effective, changing from a wonderful night purple to an intense early morning yellow or an interior forest green. After the teasing has turned to insults, Raccoon comes upon the sleeping Wolf and covers his eyes with tar and clay. The mixture hardens, and Wolf has to beg the birds to peck away the seal so that he can see again. After taking his revenge by rolling the sleeping Raccoon's hollow tree home down a hill, Wolf shows his gratitude to the birds by painting their feathers with bright dyes and offers his forgiveness to Raccoon by painting stripes on his tail. Taylor cites several sources for this pleasing pourquoi tale. In the appended notes, she comments on the Seneca and the roles of Wolf and Raccoon in their stories. The large-scale batik illustrations, with their distinctive look, will please young children with their clarity and freshness. A satisfying read-aloud. Carolyn Phelan
