The book is about the dance scene in Los Angeles in the 90s. Babitz took dance lessons, went dancing, interviewed dancers and instructors, and made friends among them. There is commentary interspersed with dialog. The book reads easily and in the Epilogue, written some time after the main text because she was seriously burned and spent time recovering, contains a brief update on the dance scene (which rapidly changes, with clubs coming and going, fads coming and going, dancers coming and going, including some dying). The chapters are based on specific dances: fox-trot, two-step, tango, cajun and fais-dodo, ballroom, salsa, and both east coast and west coast swing.At first blush the book seems a break from her previous works. They were fiction (although pretty autobiographical) and based primarily in the 60s, with some tales from her parents generation back into the 30s, when Holllywood was Hollywood. There was a grace and an ambiance which she presents. And there were certain people who were graced and who helped make that ambiance. In many ways that period passed in the 70s, when she wrote to fiction pieces. There is a nostalgia about them. TWO BY TWO also harkens back to that time, to Fred and Ginger, to when there still were social graces, where flirting was an art form. The dance scene has elements of this and TWO BY TWO traces this out, but in a New Journalism fashion. And the book is a paen to dancing, because it is fun and good for you. I recommend this book

I became interested in Eve Babitz after reading the March 2014 Vanity Fair article about her youth. She sounded fascinating and I vaguely remember her as writing articles for the L.A. Times magazine or similar publications in the 80s. This was one of the only two books by her I could find. It was highly disappointing. Reads as if she transcribed her phone conversations with a friend. The overall effect is like listening to your aunt talk to a friend of hers about a bunch of their other friends doing something that you have no interest in. I can't imagine this being of interest to anyone who does not take dance lessons. The blurb tried to promote it as having "celebrity gossip," but aside from one line about Madonna taking tango lessons from Joe Shmoe or whatever, I didn't see any. Gave up after skimming 1/4 of the book. Big yawn!

If I could recommend only one resource to help Latter-day Saints with the study of the New Testament this coming year, it would be Thomas Wayment’s study edition and new translation of the New Testament. With the Church placing greater emphasis on personal and family study, there is greater need for resources to help us navigate challenging passages in scripture. When last we studied the Doctrine and Covenants in Sunday School, we had the help of the new supplementary manual, Revelations in Context. Now Wayment’s The New Testament: A Translation for Latter-day Saints provides the much needed historical, cultural, and linguistic contexts that can help to make sense of these sacred ancient texts. In the English-speaking Church, we continue to use the 1769 Blayney revision of the 1611 King James Version of the Bible. This practice helps us to identify parallels between the Bible and restoration scripture that uses similar language, but it can also lead to confusion because of the KJV’s antiquated English and heavy reliance on Latin. For instance, the KJV renders 1 Peter 2:9 as follows: “But ye are … a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.” Wayment, however, renders the passage in this way: “But you are … a people acquired so that you declare the virtues of the one who called you from darkness to his amazing light.” The KJV translators used the word “peculiar” from the Latin peculiaris meaning “personal, private, or one’s own.” Today, however, the word “peculiar” has come to mean strange or weird. But God is not calling his people weird, God is calling his people his own—his own private possession, or as Wayment renders it “a people acquired” for a purpose. For Latter-day Saint who might worry that a new English translation will obscure the parallels between the Bible and restoration scripture, don’t. Wayment has included in his detailed footnotes not only allusions to the Old Testament, but also the most comprehensive collection of parallels between the New Testament and restoration scripture (including the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price) ever published. The footnotes also include historical and cultural insights that help to clarify the text. For example, the Parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard (Matt 20:1–16) begins with a householder agreeing to pay his workers one silver coin per day. Wayment’s note on this passage provides important information to us that Matthew’s original readers already knew: “The wage for the worker who worked the entire day (= one denarius) would have been considered quite low in some regions and for certain types of work. Work contracts from North Africa indicate wages between three and eight denarii per day. Jesus’s audience would have anticipated a looming problem because of the low wage promised to the first worker.” Wayment makes it clear from the beginning, in his “Note to the Reader,” that he is not replacing the King James translation: “The language of the King James Bible will always be part of the Latter-day Saint cultural fabric in English: it is woven into our hymns, our ordinances, and our scriptural canon. It has been one of the primary vehicles through which we encounter the word of God.” But I am convinced that Wayment’s translation will help English-reading Latter-day Saints to encounter the word of God in new and profound ways.

I purchased the Kindle version because I did not want to wait 1-2 months (as of January 2019) for a print copy. I'm happy with the basic content and applaud Thomas A. Wayment for completing this project because I think the Latter-day Saints' dogged allegiance to the King James Version is impeding our ability to understand and learn from the Bible. (I seriously hope someone is working on a modern translation of the Old Testament for Latter-day Saints!) However, the Kindle version is not yet ready for prime time. It's fine if you plan to read the book straight through, but if you expect to look up a specific chapter or verse as easily as you can on your Gospel Library scripture app, forget it. Also, it's difficult to toggle back and forth between the main text and the footnotes, which are all lumped together at the end. Don't waste your money on the Kindle version and wait patiently for Deseret Book to print more copies on paper.

I learned about this translation of the New Testament shortly after attending an institute class where it was suggested to check out other bible translations.I ordered this the moment I found out it was available.I can’t express how fun and exciting it is to read the New Testament with all of the new footnotes, background on writers, and integrated maps. I will be recommending this to EVERYONE because of how much fun it is to read. Just because it’s modernized language, I feel like I really able to study and understand instead of focus so much on “what could that verse mean?” Or “why was this included in the middle of the chapter?”Everything you could wonder about has a footbote with a detailed explanation, and key references to other scripture.I can hardly wait to keep reading. This is the book my wife and I will be using for our companion study. SO AWESOME.

Excellent reference and my wife and I are enjoying it. I heard about the book from the FAIR podcast and immediately pulled over to buy it on Amazon.I am enjoying the book very much and learning A LOT! New nuggets of info on each page that I hadn’t yet learned in a lifetime of scripture study.If I could change anything, it would be the print. It’s really tiny print with a low line height and it makes it a bit tough to read even though I have good eyesight. I’d be glad to pay for more pages to get it a bit more readable. Maybe I’ll go to the digital version.

I love the concept and have enjoyed using it as a reference. I bought both the paperback and Kindle editions. My main complaint with the Kindle edition is that you can't easily jump from one verse to another verse in a different chapter or book in the Bible. Very difficult to navigate. You can jump back to the table of contents but not to a particular chapter. Also, you can't easily get to/from the footnotes which are at the end of each book. These problems could be fixed by the publisher. For now the Kindle version is a pain to use for study.

To me the notes reveal an astounding erudition. It's one thing to memorize the NT in Greek (and English) and another thing to have apparently done the same for the other canonized LDS scriptures. As for the translation itself, I am particularly grateful for Mt 5:48. Over the years I have checked several translations in search of a less impossibly demanding understanding of that verse than that which is found in the KJV. Thanks to Prof. Wayment, I now have that understanding.

I am just starting to read this, however I would like to purchase a hard copy instead of the kindle version, because the highlighting feature is spotty and I am finding myself taking many notes. Sadly, there isn’t a way to refund a digital purchase.

This book is great for planning and during the journey. So far, I have driven only the top portion, but the mile-marker detail and the info about the towns on the trip are really helpful. I appreciate the honest "time-it-takes" info about the drive also; it keeps one honest in planning. I gave this to a friend who lives a few miles off of the Trace, and he was surprised by how much he didn't know! Thanks so much!!

We used this book for a trip in October all the way from Nashville to New Orleans and followed it most of the way down the Parkway - it was a wonderful guide. It provided many good suggestions for sights along the Parkway and in nearby cities and towns. Highly recommend.

I purchased this book for our planned trip to the Natchez Trace. It has lots of good information.

Just got back from my trip and this has to be one of the best books I’ve ever purchased, so informative and gives great detailed information about each stop on the Natchez Trace.

Not bad. Didn't provide much extra on Natchez or the Natchez Trace - but a useful guide none-the-less.

I literally used an early copy of this book to assist a very recent road trip from Nashville to New Orleans. It's so well-written and the information is up-to-date. You might be able to use a GPS to get from one place to the other, but this is the way to get there in style and have some great experiences. Highly recommended.

Lonely Planet quality! Always good

Libya is not a country yet used to having many visitors from the western world (with the possible exception of Italians) so vistors should not expect too much in terms for five star comforts - or at least not yet as things are already beginning to change. It is a place well worth visiting however and this guide is very helpful in both planning your trip and finding your way around. One of the greatest tourist assests this country has are the remarkable Roman and Greek ruins at various sites throughout the country - in particular the spectular Greek ruins at Cyrene in the east of the country. (These make the acropolis of Athens look pathetic by comparison). The outlines and maps provided by Lonely Planet of these archeological sites proved accurate and helpful and allowed us to get much more out of guided tours than we could have otherwise.The guide proved remarkabley accurate in assessment of the quality of hotels, restaurants and sites to visit. So much so that our Libyan guide from one of the local tour companies was delighted when we gave him our copy at the airport on our departure. It should be noted that the authors have a somewhat rosey view of things - they don't mention the fact that a lot of litter is strewn throughout the country, a lot of people are not especially friendly (though many are) but they are right in pointing out that it is a relativley safe place to visit. All in all a smart investment for anyone visiting the country.

By all means, this Lonely Planet guide is an extremely useful tool for those travelling in Libya, and is probably the best guidebook about the country. The author and editors have put some great work into it, resulting in an excellent achievement in terms of overall coverage and book's presentation. Few other Lonely Planet guides are as interesting and fascinating to read as this one, so filled with thrilling information on history and culture, with great anecdotes and stories about Libya's wonders. But the problem is, exactly, that this guidebook is too filled with Libya's alleged 'wonders', making Libya truly appear a real dream-country for the visitor - which, very arguably, it is not. So, if you have already made your mind about going to Libya, by all means you should take this book with you. But if you are tempted to visit Libya mainly because you have been enchanted by this book, as might indeed happen given the book's excellent prose and contents, then you should think twice. The author seems to have made great friends in Libya and have enjoyed the country greatly, and I am glad for him. But please do note: Libya is far from being a pleasant place filled with "the most pleasant people on Earth" (book's wording). I have so far been to 155 sovereign nations, and to my chagrin I am sorry to say that I have found no other place on Earth as harsh, boring and outright tidious as Libya - I enjoyed Somalia, Sierra Leone and Kosovo far more ! If you are looking for Arabic warmth, Morocco or Tunisia are a much better bet. If you are looking for desert, you have a whole half-continent to consider, including nearby Algeria. If you wish to go somewhere 'new', maybe try Cuba or Iran. And I don't see why would one bother with Libya's ancient Roman ruins, since Italy is just opposite, on the other side of the Mediterranean. And if Libya fascinates you because of its alleged dangers and novelty, plenty of other alternatives exist, from Syria to Yemen. As regards the people too, I have not had the pleasant experiences which the guidebook seems to guarantee: without wishing to stereotype a whole people, I must say that I have found a great deal of arrogant, cheating, rude and inhospitable people among Libyans. Therefore my advice simply is: please take this book's positive words very cautiously. Many inacuraccies or misrepresentations are also contained in the book. The whole range of Tripoli's top-end hotels (allegedly 5-stars), listed very positively in the book, are in reality no more than low 3-stars properties with appallingly low or inexistent customer service. Some of the restaurants listed simply don't exist, or are horribly disappointing compared to the book's description. The whole procedure of getting a visa is described in the book in a way that makes it seem complex and lawyerly, while in reality I was able to get a visa very straight-forward, and was amazed by the lack of bureaucracy encountered along the process. Having said all this, thereby placing this book below the excellent standard usually offered by Lonely Planet, the book is indeed a great achievement in terms of coverage of the whole nation. In a region so hard to get to know, the author has been able to cover small towns and villages, albeit with errors, in a way that is amazing and wonderful. And as mentioned previously, the book is so rich with facts about Libya, that it makes fascinating reading, by all means great for the armchair traveller, and for those wishing to dream of a wonderful Libya. Indeed, I wish Libya were really as the author describes it...

Eldon Hall has done something rare with this book. He has taken a very complex subject, nearly forgotten due to time, and made it utterly relevant and engaging. For anyone with an interest in either space or computer history, this is a vital book.It is somewhat technical (I had no idea how they made rope memory modules, an early ROM format before this book for instance), but Hall is very careful to explain things in terms that an average reader can readily understand.The book itself documents the Apollo Guidance Computer from conception through numerous iterations and changes, to final successful lunar landings. Although the AGC capabilities seem trivial today, the AGC was the world's first Integrated Chip computer, and had enormous hurdles to overcome. In the end, of course, we know that Hall and his fellow employees at MIT did a good job...what I didn't know before was exactly what they had to do and the challenges they had to overcome.

The book presents a close-up look at the challenges of devising new and novel technological solutions from the unique perspective of a person who was there when it was happening. The stories of some of the people behind the innovations provide a rare glimpse into the thinking and personalities of the engineers involved with the development of the AGC, and the descriptions of the interactions between NASA and the engineers at MIT offer some unique insights into the dynamics of how space missions really happen.Computer technology has changed dramatically since the days of Apollo, and that change is due in large part to the Apollo program. Comparing the photographs of the prototype systems for the AGC to the package that actually flew on the spacecraft gives new meaning to word "amazing". The software that ran on the AGC was also a stunning feat in and of itself. The AGC utilized real-time multi-tasking before it was even a commonly accepted approach in the software industry (and it's now a standard feature of every cell phone and MP3 player).The text is well-written and easily accessible, with enough details to keep the more technical minded reader interested. As someone who stood on a hill behind his house in Florida as a kid and watched the Saturn V rockets disappear over the horizon, stayed up late to watch Neil Armstrong step onto the surface of the moon, and then later ended up working in the aerospace industry, this book has a special meaning for me. I highly recommend it.

As a high-school then college student during the development of the Apollo missions, I found the book very interesting. In 1967, our senior class math teacher took us to Bowling Green State University to learn how to program BGSU's new IBM 360 computer using Fortran and punch cards. I designed a small computer the year before that could count from 0 to 7 as a science fair project, so the details on how they selected components for the Apollo computers was very interesting. During my senior year in high school, using my new knowledge of computers, I designed and built a computer that computed poker odds using just diode arrays, so the construction techniques used to develop the AGC (Apollo Guidance Computer) was even more interesting. I watched Apollo 11 land on the moon on my 20th birthday on July 20th, 1969, so I have always had an interest in that great program. It depicts admirably what this country can do when challenged.

What a fascinating book! I expected to like it, but the level of detail and the quality of the writing and graphics was outstanding. I knew the outline of the story but it was particularly interesting to read in detail how the design evolved as the AGC was developed. There are lessons in there for even today's designers about reliability and testing. In case it isn't clear, this is not a book for everyone. I am a electrical engineer actively developing embedded systems, and watched the Apollo missions on TV, so this book hit my sweet spot.This book is a perfect companion to "Digital Apollo" by Mindell, which explores in detail the man-machine interface. This book focuses entirely on the hardware itself.The only possible complaints I have are that it was too short, and that there was only a brief section on software development.I was lucky enough to find a copy in my University library so I won't weigh in on the cost :)

This text is a very narrow treatise on an archaic topic; specifically, the history of the Apollo Navigation Computer. This computer was compact and versatile, being the first major effort to use integrated circuits extensively but before microprocessors. The book is well written and interesting to me. There are many color photographs and diagrams that bring the author's description's to life. His narrative is enlightening for technically knowledgeable readers though the author also takes time to explain some basic concepts without slowing the work down. The only problem with the book is that it costs 58 bucks. This is very expensive for a paperback book and that amounts to almost $3 dollars per page. This is probably due to being printed in small numbers by a specialty press. For this much money, though, I expect a hardcover. Due to the specialization of its content and its high cost, I recommend this book only to those with great interest in either in early manned spaceflight or the history of computers.UPDATE 2014. Although I initially gave this a 2 star rating, the book has been great for multiple reads and I still refer to it. So, in the end it was worth the price. There are fascinating nuggets and great photos you wont see anywhere else.

Even though the marketplace is getting bigger, many publications today are either "academic level" or "dummed down" for general consumption.
