'Being Mortal' by Atul Gawande is really two books in one - the first half talks about what it is like to get old in America and what happens to the elderly in our current medically-focused society. He speaks of nursing homes, assisted livings, and newer models of care for the elderly, but eventually comes to a point which is key - that people should be able to exist as they wish during their final days, but that our current system only places unfair restrictions upon them at a time when they need freedom the most. Gawande insinuates that during the time that we feel we are helping our elders, we may actually be hastening their demise. It's an interesting commentary which has to be read carefully to be believed.The second half of the book starts out with an article by Gawande from the New Yorker, "Letting Go", in which he describes how our current society addresses dying people at the end of life, including the incredibly tragic story of a new mother with lung cancer. This is a powerful article / chapter which is riveting in its stories and very intelligent in its commentary. After this, Gawande goes on to explain his own personal journey with mortality, in the illness, decline, and eventual death of his father from a spinal cord tumor. It is this section which is probably the most powerful one in the book, not just because of its personal nature, but because of how Gawande is able to intersperse the discussion of death with his own personal experience. While you find yourself being drawn in as he shares his own story, you are also amazed as how he is able to clearly lay out what is happening to his father in the context of so many others that share the same fate.In the first paragraph of the epilogue, Gawande lays out the most important theme of the book - "Being mortal is about the struggle to cope with the constraints of our biology, with the limits set by genes and cells and flesh and bone. Medical science has given us remarkable power to push against these limits, and the potential value of his power was a central reason I became a doctor. But again and again, I have seen the damage we in medicine do when we fail to acknowledge that such power is finite and always will be." This is the most powerful paragraph of the book, and one that everyone who reads this book should remember if they are ever faced with the circumstances that Gawande faced in this book.Gawande's a gifted writer, and this one is a gem. This is a timely book for me because my parents are very elderly (94 and 88) and determined to stay in their home until the last possible second. After reading this thought provoking book that teaches so much I am thinking that it may be possible for them to stay until the end which could be next week or a few years from now. It's going to take some organizing, but it looks like it is worth some research and time. It makes me sad to see how much of their independence they have lost, but they still enjoy their lives as limited as they are.There is a tendency to treat old people like children which I realize now is usually very wrong. My dad is a diabetic and we (my siblings and I) have told him over and over that his diet of sugary cereal or cinnamon rolls and orange juice for breakfast and light store brand fruit yogurt with grapes and three cookies for lunch is not what he should be eating. He acts surprised every time we mention this, but doesn't change a thing because I now understand that he wants the independence of eating as he pleases. He has lost so much--can barely hear or see or walk, that he needs these very small pleasures to continue. I imagine he doesn't see the point in giving up anything else because he has so little left. My mother's memory is going and she has COPD, but somehow has lots of get up and go. She does a lot for my dad even though I suspect she is the sicker one. Being Mortal is making me think about the best way to help my parents which will probably start with asking them what they want.One thing that surprised me completely was Dr. Gawande's statement that genetics is only a small part of reaching old age. Here I've been thinking that because my parents have lived so long that reaching old age is probably a no brainer for me. I have to think about that possiblity some more--a lot more.This book has some touching stories about very sick people and how their lives ended. Unfortunately for many sick people the medical community is driven to act, but not necessarily to do what is best for the individual. It seems to me that they've forgotten "the do no harm" part of being a doctor. It seems to me it does harm people to ruin the time sick people have left.A very through provoking book that will ultimately make me think about what I want when the end is near. I wish everyone would read it; especially medical people.

A very good book! I would like to note that I have created a slight tweak to the overall technique that massively reinforces the mask: First allow the mask to very thoroughly dry. This is important. Then, dilute some PVA glue, until it's about the thickness of cream. Get some paper strips, like you would for regular paper mache, but use a tough, medium to heavy weight paper, such as from paper grocery bags. Moisten the paper VERY lightly, run between your fingers to remove any excess water. Then dip in the glue and run the piece of paper between your fingers to remove excess glue. Very carefully line the interior of the mask with a couple of layers of these strips. You want the mask to be VERY dry, because if it is still wet when you do this, the dampness from the new paper strips might make it deform. I've made two masks with these extra layers of paper, and they're incredibly resilient. One of them was a test mask, and I dropped it, and sorta roughed it up to see what kind of abuse it could take. It is still completely intact. I think I would need to put it under a car tire or use a large hammer and considerable force to break it. The sturdiness of it is comparable to if I had made it out of hardwood. I believe this technique would allow for some even more complex sculptures, too! If you're hesitant to buy this book, it's absolutely worth the small price asked. :)

Jonni is the go to person for all things paper mache related. I don't make masks but I bought this book 1)to support this generous artist who so graciously shares her experience online at ultimatepapermache.com and 2) I wanted to have the step outs and recipes in my studio as I was creating. I have tweaked the recipes to suite my needs but truly appreciate having her wealth of experience right by my side as I am working in the studio. My book is messy now but that just shows how much I have used it. Thank you Jonni!!!

I love this book! It gives you the basic instructions & a lot of neat ideas for mask making. Although, somehow the ones i have made by following the paper mache & gesso recipes, have turned out heavier than i had expected, to the point that i really should have added extra straps to hold them onto the head. I think for now, when i use these recipes, i will be making helmets instead of masks until i figure out how to make them lighter. This book made me so excited to get started that i never completely finished reading it. I guess i should finish it, it might tell me what i need to know.

Love this book. I keep it with my paper mache supplies and use the recipes in it all the time! It is detailed and takes you through each step so you can make each mask just like the ones in the pics and then you have all the knowledge to invent your own designs. Love the author and she has a website that you can go and ask questions or show off your work. I included a pic of a luigi mask I made using her techniques, it was a lot of fun and my son loves the mask!

Recently I searched mask-making and came across a YouTube tutorial posted by Jonni Good. She was so thorough and made her techniques look so easy; I couldn't wait for her to post the next segment of the process. After watching all three YouTube posts on her Panalone mask, I bought this book. Great recipes for gesso and paste that are über easy and inexpensive. The author's explanations in the book are as concise and understandable as her tutorial videos - really, really good stuff! Lots of great photos. I recommend this book for paper mâché artists at any level. I have some experience with mask-making, paper mâché and the history of comedia del arte and I found this book to be a very worthwhile investment.Aside: Jonni Good seems to be a real animal lover. Her cat is singing (meowing) away in one of the video tutorials. Pretty funny.

Useful reference for making paper mache masks. Much of the info is available online, but this puts it all in one spot and gives excellent step by step tutorials as well as multiple recipes and handy tips to avoid common mistakes only an expert would know. Very pleased. I only used the first couple chapters, but the tutorials for the various masks provided helpful in forming my own design.

This is an amazing book. I found it by browsing YouTube for mask-making videos.As a Theatre Arts teacher, I was looking for different techniques to make paper mache masks. I bought the book and have used it a lot since I bought it.Instructions are clear and easy to follow, it has many pictures and provides good support when in doubt.She has a page in which she posts videos of the procedure, which are great for visual learners.

The great thing about the projects in this book is that they are all so doable. Every step is carefully explained with heaps of photographs so that you can't help but make some successful pieces of your own. Not only do you learn how to make some stunning masks (with complete project instructions) but there are also a lot of tips and tricks on how to create a finish on your masks that looks professional and is long lasting. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in paper mache crafts and mask making.Lisa Oliver

This book was a lifesaver for reviewing before my final; however, I used the casebook written by these authors, and one of the authors was my professor. I don't know how helpful it would be to other users.

This edition would be better if it followed the style of Mastering Criminal Law, which had far more comprehensive and highlighted factors, tests and elements in the body of the text. Otherwise, this text covers the ground needed for a basic torts class in accessible prose.

first, a caveat, one of the authors of this book is also the author of my text book and my professor. so i figured i had a pretty good chance of learning what he thought was important by reading this. it is concise, easy to understand and the organization helped me put things in a logical order. i read this at the end of the semester a few weeks before finals and only wish i had it since the beginning.

I used this book for my Torts 2 class in Law School. It was by far the most helpful supplement I have used. This book explains the law and how it operates rather than list the information in an outline format. This format really helped me to understand what I was reading and not just memorize it. I would greatly recommend to anyone who is looking for a good torts supplement. I would most definitely buy this book again!

There’s an abundance of well-illustrated scenes that make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I really look for in a good book.Very appealing and alluring, this work had me immersed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability (as always) when it comes to storytelling. There is plenty of non-stop action in this page turner that will take the reader on a truly gripping and intriguing journey.I’m a big fan of this author so I’ll be looking forward to reading more from Leslie Wolfe in the future. I would recommend this book and would add that it has a distinctly cinematic feel to it. I see no reason why it couldn’t be adapted for the Silver Screen. In my humble opinion, I honestly think this would make a great movie. Five stars from me.

‘Taker of Lives’ is the first of Leslie Wolfe’s novels that I’ve read; it won’t be the last. To try to sum it up in a few words by labelling it as a procedural crime novel with a difference would not really be doing it justice. Yes, it is about a single-minded FBI profiler’s hunt for a serial killer; yes, it features a strong female protagonist; yes, she’s backed up by a couple of male cops who bring their experience and unique way of doing things to the hunt. It is all this and more. Much more.First, author Wolfe has imbued her female protagonist with a solid, realistic, down-to-earth feel that contrasts nicely with her insights into the mind of the killer she seeks, allowing this to highlight her emotions and frustration, as her investigation seems to be thwarted at every turn. Yet, for me, the key to my enjoyment of this superb read lays in the original twist Wolfe gives to her serial killer. I won’t go into details, as this ventures into the realm of spoilers, yet suffice it to say I’ve not come across a villain as despicable and scary as this one in a long time. The author manages to convey the feeling of impotence suffered by protagonists, at the killer’s ability to always be several steps ahead, into the mind of the reader with awe-inspiring ease. The contemporary nature of the antagonist’s crimes is also something that stands out in the tale, something readers can easily identify with, which makes the story all the more credible. Definitely a novel for, and about, the times we live in.A bonus for this reader is the undercurrent of incisive criticism of how our society works these days, with its false idols flashing into public awareness like so many shooting stars on a dark summer night. An outstanding read. Highly recommended.

This is another outstanding work by Leslie Wolfe and easily better than a lot of what the big publishers push onto the bookshelves of those increasingly rare bricks and mortar bookstores! It’s novels like “Taker of Lives” that are gradually converting me to actually enjoy reading with a device instead of turning paper pages, but I digress. . .Anyone who enjoys a good mystery told at a page-turning pace with a dash of interesting technology and a highly original plot will enjoy this novel. The interspersed chapters in which the killer speaks directly to the reader provide very effective insight into the thinking of a person who sees nothing wrong with psychological torture and actual murder – and actually engenders a little sympathy for the killer’s motives.I was also impressed with how the killer draws Tess (the main character) more personally into the rapidly unfolding events, adding substantially to the evolving tension of the story and the urgency to solve the puzzle and save potential future victims.And, if you read Wolfe’s prior Tess Winnett novels, you’ll enjoy the further development of the relationships between Tess and her boss and coworkers. These characters would be great for a new television series (hint, hint, Amazon – or someone capable of outcompeting Amazon!).

What I read of this book was a series of truisms by a pair of simpletons offering handwave "solutions" that themselves rely upon massive over-generalizations.For me, this book was a waste of time.
