Unfortunately, there is a lot of generic advice that will give you guidance. However, this book tries to hard covering too many topics with a superficial explanation. There are many vignettes of prior successes; however, past performance does not predict the future. Hindsight is 20/20.For people who are paying monthly payments on credit card accounts and other short term loans, people who feel like they have too many expenses or feel like they are in over their heads in bills, this book will give guidance. It is helpful for those who are seeking a method to plan for retiring. If you find your savings accounts with the 'low fuel' light on, this is the "AAA" equivalent of getting your finances kick started on your trip to better financial security. The book is broken down into major categories:Spend LessSave MoreMake MoreGive MoreSPEND LESSMany of the principles regarding spending less money, decreasing debt, and caveats of debt counselors are some key points to get out from under a heavy load of liabilities.SAVE MOREThe concept of investments such as diversifying in real estate, stocks and bonds sounds simple in theory. However, there are numerous volumes of books written on each subject. This book, however, is more of an introduction to summarizing major investment vehicles, rather than offering a definitive method of managing your assets. There are other books that will help you in your investing quest like the books listed below:The Real Estate Investor's Handbook: The Complete Guide for the Individual InvestorTechnical Analysis of Stock TrendsThe Winning Investment Habits of Warren Buffett & George SorosThe Intelligent Investor: The Definitive Book on Value Investing. A Book of Practical Counsel (Revised Edition)MAKE MOREThe author outlines methods of how to increase your income stream, and some topics are covered as more of a primer to get you started.AnotherSmall Business Ideas: 400 Latest & Greatest Small Business IdeasSUMMARYThis is a good primer on getting your finances turned around. It is more of an introduction on how to get started.

I didn't realize how old this book was when I purchased it, and I came here to see if I could still return it (unfortunately not).I want to write the author and see how these people are doing today, the couple he made buy a house in 2004 so they would get rich off the equity. If you are starting late you need to be reading F.I.R.E. books, not the antiquated info in this book! Perhaps the info on how to get out of debt or get a raise is good, but honestly, if I were this author I would have either written a revision or pulled the book from shelves because it is so not appropriate for getting ahead today. I'm 38 and found much more helpful info in books about extreme early retirement and financial independence.

Wish I had discovered this book in my 30's, but even in my mid 50's I found this book invaluable, and I have hope now that it's not too late to achieve financial stability, and even independence. Very empowering, yet not unrealistic or scary. David Bach lays out sensible, doable steps to take charge of your finances and your financial future. There's hope, everyone!

This book is very motivating. I got a lot of great tips about saving money and paying off debt that I am already implementing. The book flows very easily and can be applied to anyone in any economical situation. It makes an older saver feel hopeful that his/her economic situation can improve by following the many practical suggestions offered. I did not give it five stars only because a lot has changed in the financial world since it was written ie, the ease with which to obtain mortgages, etc. No fault of Mr. Bach of course, he's done a wonderful job of getting me to save more, spend less, and chip away at debt. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who feels it's too late to get their finances in better shape.

This was written in 2006 prior to the home bubble and banks crashing, i.e. Fannie Mae, etc etc. No longer trusting of mutual fund advice or of bonds. Greening other useful advise.

In almost all of David Bach's books, he describes a file system for your financial files. I had a file system. But when the file cabinet broke, and after I started putting my important papers in folders in boxes, and then they filled up and I left them on top of a table... the paper fire hazard finally had to be dealt with. Although I didn't follow his system literally, it inspired me to scan all this rubble and organize it in my computer (about 1 month of effort). The very personal files (those with Social Security numbers and account numbers) are stored on my Iron Key. The paper in the living room is nearly gone by now, and I can find my documents all the way back to 2004 instantly and easily. If you are young, any of David Bach's books will be helpful regardless of their title. You are never too young to start saving, and he has great advice on how much, how and when to do this. Goals such as retirement and college are important. But if you just start building your financial portfolio as early as you can, you almost won't need to worry about the goals - the money will be there when you need it. David Bach also helps you to differentiate need from want, and identifies what "wants" waste your hard earned money.I recommend the Finish Rich series for everyone, young and old alike. These books are must haves!

This book taught me that I didn't need to be afraid of the fact that I had not managed my finances properly throughout my life - and that at age 61 it's not too late to start building a nest egg towards financial freedom.Bach's book is simple to follow, logical, and immensely motivational. My only regret is that several chapters talk about Institutions and support in the USA. I live in South Africa therefore these parts of the book were not relevant to me. But Bach gave me the leads to research the equivalent institutions in my own country.I recommend the book to anyone who, like me, has fooled themselves by thinking all their working lives that money is not important. It's a crucial aspect of wellbeing!

This book is worth more than 3 stars, but in light of all the 5-star reviews (written by young bloggers, probably) I find myself compelled to provide a counterpoint. For the Love: Fighting for Grace in a World of Impossible Standards is a fun stream-of-consciousness roller coaster ride through the rants and raves of a Jesus-loving, preacher's wife and mother-of-5, sprinkled with a little minor celebrity glitz. It is, therefore, not what I expected. The book is truly funny, easy to read in small snatches and occasionally makes a great point of practical theology. (“If you can make a pot of chili and use a cell phone, then you can create community.” Or, “Anytime the rich and poor combine, we should listen to whoever has the least power.”) However, it is not what I expected because the title suckered me. I thought it was going to be a straight-up education about grace applied to ourselves primarily and others secondarily, something we all sorely need, whether we are coming from the get-your-life-in-line end of the spectrum or the let-it-all-hang-out end. But it's not. After the wonderful Introduction, grace is never directly addressed again, and there are whole chapters which don't even use the word. There IS a chapter on fashion, multiple chapters addressing pet peeves, Jen's life in Facebook posts and several intricate recipes. Yes, there are a couple more serious chapters about missions (seemingly borrowed from When Helping Hurts) and church leaders, but there is approximately one Bible reference (ok, I found three more in the second-to-last, confusing chapter encouraging women to lead more) and for a book touting grace, I felt kind of ragged on a few times.I could be the author's mother (if I'd had a couple rough and/or promiscuous teen years), so there's one other thing I've got to say: sometimes this good-hearted lady knows not of what she speaks. By her own admission she hasn't been through a lot of hardships. She has a loving pastor-husband, five great kids who are still at home, and she and her friends cheer on one another's published books, released CD's and popular podcasts. Talk to me again when there's only one of you working on your marriage, when your grown child has embraced atheism, when you've had a significant part of your body disfigured, or when your best friend or your dreams have died a slow death. Then you can write a serious book aimed at lifting burdens, explaining modern dilemmas or applying grace to self-condemnation. Until then, please adhere to truth in advertising by subtitling your book: Funny Blogs about Being a Middle-aged Christian Mom.Please buy this book (seriously, do) if you want to read some light yet inspiring Christian humor. Just don't be fooled by the title like I was. And, Jen, when you decide to write the book you promised in the Introduction, I'll stand in line for it.

Hatmaker is hilarious, peppering jokes between tear jerker odes to her loved ones, community, and Jesus. The chapter about "Callings" by itself makes it worth it to get the book. She also fills an important hole in common Christian writing - she talks about grace, but also addresses the need for people to leave abusive and toxic relationships. She also frankly addresses modern problems in the church, such as homophobia, science-aversion, and unnecessary dogmatism. It's a good book! I have to whine about something though. I was personally quite miffed by the bits on cooking. She has a little speel about how "we" do have time to cook healthy meals, mixed in with a mockery of advertisements for fast food and packaged food. Then she follows it up with a recipe that requires two hours in the oven. I remembered that Hatmaker does not work a nine to five job like most of us and, suddenly, that comment made sense. If I tried that, husband and I would be eating dinner at 8:45 P.M. Correction, I would be crying from hunger by 7:15 P.M. and husband would have bought us burgers by 7:20 P.M. I was very much enjoying the book but was very disheartened by the way she talked about food as some kind of relationship glue. I grew up with and live with people who just don't care that much about food - investing extra time and money into food would mean disappointment and a slimmer budget for me. I know because I've tried; I had to change my standards about food to "Well, they are easily pleased. That's a blessing." I think I was so bothered by the comments because the rest of the book is such a good representation of finding acceptance and satisfaction. Cooking is such a sore subject for so many women and I wish Hatmaker had been a little gentler with it. Anyway, she is a good writer and the book is encouraging and thoughtful on the whole.

The best of Jen Hatmaker to date, in my opinion. She makes me laugh so hard, I cry. Her stories are so real and encouraging. Her approach to loving her family, friends, and the disenfranchised people around her is what I believe God expects from all Christ followers. Her approach is Grace based, which is where God has been leading me to focus. After 40 years as a Southern Baptist, married to a minister, the daughter of a staff member, and myself a pianist/organist, the judgmental, political leanings of the denomination has become more and more disgusting to me. Jen's thoughts and scripture references help me pray through what path God is leading me down as I try to love people unconditionally.

This book is more a monologue of Jen Hatmaker's life. A whole chapter devoted to whether leggings are pants? I quit half way through. This wasn't about enriching my relationship with the Lord as much as stand up comedy from her life. Disappointed.

Save your money! This book is a mere compilation of Jenn Hatmakers opinions on other Christians, while using quick witted and back handed one liners. It's ALL OVER THE PLACE. Definitely not a study or anything. The title is misleading, it's not about finding grace at all! If you want my copy, feel free to reach out, I'm looking to get rid of mine, or perhaps I'll just toss it.

American Green: The Obsessive Quest for the Perfect Lawn

Review

“The lawn is the centerpiece of the American Dream, and why wouldn’t we dream about our obsession? In American Green, Ted Steinberg explores the psychological, moral, economic, and, yes, even political implications of growing and mowing a lawn, a not at all academic act that turns out to be a blast. You may never picnic the same way again, but if you do, you will want to talk about it with your city councilman, if not your doctor.” - Robert Sullivan, author of Rats

The book is interesting, mostly, with stories about how obsessed Americans are, and what lengths we'll go to, to maintain a patch of monoculture. If you know nothing about that history, it is a decent read. If you're already familiar with it, then it isn't all that appealing. It really needs some editing/proofing though, as it is chock full of typographical errors.

This was required text for American History II. I cannot say the topic was one of my favorites, but this novel contained a good deal of American lawn care history and purpose. I knew a good deal about lawns before I read this book, but I am proud to say I more than doubled my lawn vocabulary and knowledge base with this.Worth reading for informational and historical reasons. Product exactly as described, perfect condition.

Steinberg shows in his book that our obsession with lawns has done more harm than good. The constant cycle of seeding, mowing, etc. is so labor intensive, and really does nothing for the planet, but it feeds our human, suburban-driven egos. It's a very readable book, full of historical notes, anecdotes, and points about how the grass is NOT always greener; in fact, the "green" thing to do now is put your lawn on a diet, by reducing it, and place other types of foliage that are more beneficial like moss, native plants, and clover. The idea of endless turfgrass has proven to be detrimental. This book is a great motivator to choose alternative ground covers.

I was introduced to this book through an environmental history class I took in college. I am studying agroecology and sustainable agriculture, so I came into it with a base knowledge that may have been more than was expected by Steinberg as his target audience and still absolutely loved it. Great research about present conditions and a fascinating look at the past. I would definitely suggest it to anyone, especially people who grew up or presently live in the suburbs.

This is one of the most entertaining and informative books I have read in years. Steinberg, a clearly gifted author, has taken a seemingly mundane topic and written something that has depth, is interesting, and very humorous. I thoroughly enjoyed his writing style. I will read it again in the future.

great read, thanks!

But were afraid to ask.Perhaps it isn't as amazing that someone would tackle this verdant subject as that there are actually two books which advertise themselves as a history of the lawn (see also The Lawn: A History of an American Obsession), and that both include a form of the word obsession. It is important to state up front that I have completely missed out on this particular passion - crabgrass, clover and dandelions are welcome in my front yard, as are the ruts underneath the swing-set, the impressions left by my hammock frame, and the inevitable proliferation of mystery grasses growing up through the cracks in my sidewalks.I give that little bit of personal information because I'm trying to define exactly who I think this book is best suited for: The lawn-owner who has not yet crossed over to the fanatical, but who suspects they may be headed there. (Remember - people who don't have a problem obsessing over their lawn don't sit around wondering if they have a problem obsessing over their lawn.) If you are genuinely interested in your yard, yet are still able to have a sense of humor about your ardor, then this well-researched and sincere history of the lawn, lawn-care, and its future is targeted at you. If, on the other hand, you, like Clint Eastwood, are more likely to target trespassers on your lawn with a double-barrel shotgun, then perhaps there are other avenues open for your reading pleasure. (The Lawn Bible: How to Keep It Green, Groomed, and Growing Every Season of the Year)Author Ted Steinberg eschews this theological approach and, while avoiding the ready-made opportunity for lampooning the idea, also never forgets that what we're talking about when we talk about lawns is really just grass - no matter what Scotts might want us to think. Divided into three parts, AMERICAN GREEN recounts the history of the lawn as we know it today, the side effects of the search for a perfect green, and finally new trends in the yard mentality. From the English idea of lawns to the hyper-conformity of Levittown; the history of Scotts and TruGreen ChemLawn; the environmental arguments; and the urge to merge with natural grass rather than turf grass, Mr. Steinberg is nothing if not thorough. After reading American Green, there is truly nothing more I want to know about the history of the Lawn.I think perhaps it is this exhaustive approach that drags the book down in the end. I believe that any subject can be made interesting by a skilled author, but the less-is-more cliche may have worked better in this instance. As it is, AMERICAN GREEN is too much for those interested in something diversionary, but probably not enough for true devotees of the lawn. That leaves a chunk of people who are just right for the book, but who are probably out laying down fertilizer rather than looking for some light reading to round out their hammock-time. Highly recommended for lawn-afficionados; probably of marginal interest to heretics like me.

This book makes it clear that Americans are very odd people, at least when it comes to lawns. Not only do Americans like to have patches of green around their homes, but they like *big* patches of green that require lots of attention to keep green. In this book, Ted Steinberg tells you everything that you might want to know about these lawns. He begins the story with the cookie-cutter homes and lawns of Levittowns. These aspired to reproduce English formal gardens in the New World, but in a mass-produced way. Then Steinberg moves to the spread of lawns across the country, and the extensive use of power lawnmowers, fertilizers and pesticides, and intensive watering. For many Americans, lawn care borders on the obsessive-compulsive, and this is fed by the lawn care industry, especially Scotts. Golf courses represent another, equally compulsive, variation on the home lawn theme. This book is a well-written expose of the American lawn. It's also quite funny in two ways. First, Americans are funny when they take care of the lawns, so Steinberg can stick just to the facts and be funny. Second, he is good at making funny side comments, often tongue-in-cheek.There are serious sides. The environmental consequences of the American lawn include intensive water use in the desert southwest, lawn chemical runoff, lawnmower air pollution, leaf-blower noise pollution, and the spread of invasive species at the expense of native species. Lawns also come at a significant cost in safety, thanks to power mowers, especially riding mowers. After that indictment, Steinberg concludes with a vision of eco-friendly, safe landscaping - - one that even includes lawns.

Incredibly helpful. I'm a first-year medical student, and I struggled with Immuno. My TA recommended this book as a high-level overview that could help me develop a framework for the detailed information we were learning in class. She was right. This book gives some color and interest to the otherwise dry alphabet soup that is introductory Immunology. The writing is clear and engaging, and it ends up feeling like you're reading a story rather than a textbook.

I bought this book as a first year medical student when my understanding of immunology was very weak. Even after the course was over, my grasp on the topic was so poor that I couldn't pass my final. Desperate to pass my remedial exam, I purchased this book on the recommendation of a couple classmates, and I am so glad that I did. This book really breaks down the first year medical immunology class into a very easy to digest (and dare I say enjoyable!) and CONCISE explanation. Don't be fooled-- this book has a lot of detail in it for being so thin. It reads like a story, following a logical order as it takes you through the steps of immunological development and the variety of immune responses of the human body. The unique story-like format spares no explanation so you don't have to memorize all those little details; rather, they just make sense! Be aware, however, that this is basic/normal immunology-- it doesn't delve into a lot of pathology. It's perfect for the struggling M1 student, or as a way to stay engaged and interested in the topic throughout the course. Before getting this book, I neither understood nor liked immunology. Now I understand it and enjoy it. Major props to Dr. Sompayrac.

In 1998, I wrote the first edition of How the Immune System Works because I couldn’t find a book that would give my students an overall view of the immune system. What was missing was a short book that tells, in simple language, how the immune system fits together – a book that presents the big picture of the immune system, without the jargon and the details. This, the newest edition of my little book, continues that tradition. For the fifth edition, I’ve updated all the lectures to include the latest information. I’ve also added a new lecture on the intestinal immune system. Our knowledge of how the immune system deals with the trillions of bacteria, viruses, and parasites that inhabit our intestines is still evolving. However, enough is now known to see the rough outlines of how this important arm of the immune system works. In addition to this new material, I’ve also made some “style changes” that I think will make the fifth edition even easier to use. For example, I’ve included a short “Heads Up!” section at the beginning of each lecture to alert my readers to the important topics that will be covered. Also, essential words and phrases are now highlighted in red where they first appear in the text, and a summary of important concepts is included at the end of each lecture. Although How the Immune System Works is used as the textbook for some immunology courses, I suspect that most students buy this book and then carry it around in a brown paper bag – so their professor won’t know what they are reading in order to make sense of the lectures! Indeed, How the Immune System Works has become a bit of a cult book, as thousands of students have used it to help them master this difficult subject. I’ve been told that I even have a “fan club” on Facebook. How cool is that? I believe this fifth edition is the best one yet. I hope you will think so too.

Had to buy this book for class. The material is clearly explained in simple terms which is really helpful especially for a topic like immunology which tends to be vocab heavy and intricate. Really easy and pleasnt read!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I had listened to several lectures on the immune system and was still overwhelmed but this book cleared up a lot. The author's enthusiasm for the topic is encouraging. He uses many memorable vignettes to help the reader understand. I hope I can find more books as useful as this in my studies.

This book is very well written and easy to understand for someone who is just starting to learn about immunology, even if you already have an advance degree in science. With lively language, this books helps you to understand the key concepts and build an clear overview for immunology, so you are ready for further readings.

This book was a great primer to read before the immunology course in medical school. It makes no assumptions that you know the different parts of the immune system and introduces all the key players so that you have an overview of How the Immune System Works (see what I did there) before you attend the lectures/watch Kaplan videos.

Heaven-sent.If I had known. If I had known... this book existed when I struggled through immunology during my first year. Sweet goodness my life would have been so much easier when I waded through those trenches of cluelessness. Seriously *the* best immuno book I have read for a general overview of "need-to-knows" during medical school. I could have read this text in 5-7 days and simply sat in class and allowed my professors to reinforce information.I found this book towards the end of my immuno-micro course (3-wks at my school) and became pretty upset by how great it's written and the fact I had no idea it existed 2 weeks prior :(. I'm actually reading this the month before my step 1 study period starts to really learn immuno.Excellent Resource for Medical Students.

Bestselling author Matthew Kelly believes it is possible"¬‚¬"and in his latest book, The Biggest Lie, he explains how. We all want to be happy and live life to the fullest, but the answer isn't found in the world's definition of happiness. But as Matthew Kelly shows, we've arrived at a crucial moment in history. People are disillusioned with what the world offers. The world is in desperate need of change, and no one is in a better position to effect that change than Christians. We have an incredible opportunity to dispel the lies and cut through the confusion and false promises around us. This book provides the practical tools necessary to help you regain your fervor and leave your mark on the world"¬‚¬"and experience more happiness than you thought possible. I have been a fan of the works of Matthew Kelly since I first read one of his books late in 2015. Since that time, I have read a book by him a total of 18 times. I have been bouncing around his different titles randomly pickling what to read next. This book is his most recent publication, at the time of writing this review. This book has a densely packed 15 chapters:1. Life Is A Puzzle2. Your Happiness Project3. The False Promises And Lies Of This World4. I've Been Lying To Myself5. So Many Lies About Christianity6. The Biggest Lie7. Prove It!8. One Beautiful Truth9. The World Needs Changing10. It's Been Done Before11. History Is Presenting Christianity With A New Opportunity12. Everyday Miracles13. Live An Intriguing Life14. Our Dirty Little Secret15. Now Is Your Time! After the last book I reviewed by Matthew Kelly a reader reached out to me and asked if Kelly was just a Catholic version of Max Lucado. I thought about that for a while, when I was involved with non-denomination campus ministries I read a lot of Lucado. Eventually I stopped because it all felt the same. It came to feel like Lucado just continued to present variations on a theme without having much real new content. And I feel the same way about Mark Batterson. But with Matthew Kelly I have not felt that at all yet. Yes Kelly writes with a great deal of passion, and he does sometimes use the same illustrations. And his catch phrase: 'Becoming the best version of yourself' appears often in his writings. But even with all of that with each new book by Kelly that I read I have a renewed interest in reading more of his works. Every time I finish one I go and pick one I have not read and add it to my to be read pile.In this book Kelly states:"Transforming people one at a time is at the heart of God's plan for the world. Itis also essential to developing dynamic marriages, loving families, vibrant Christian communities, thriving businesses and economies, and extraordinary schools and nations. If you get the man right (or the woman, of course), you get the world right.""The thing is, our deep yearning isn't for momentary pleasures; it is for lastinghappiness in a changing world. The world is always changing; we cannot control every situation. Situational happiness is easy. It is easy to be happy lying on an exotic tropical beach all day for a week. But so much of this happiness is dependent on the situation. What we are really hungry for is a happiness that is independent of the situation."Matthew also shares with us form his personal experience. He states:"Through my own quest for happiness, there are a few things Ihave learned: Happiness and pleasure are not the same thing. Getting what I want doesn't make me happy. Focusing on myself almost never leads to happiness. I am never happy when I pretend to be someone I am not. Too much of the happiness I experience is dependent on unsustainable circumstances or situations. The more I help others in their quest for lasting happiness, the happier I seem to be. Lying never makes me happy. Happiness is always found by embracing the present moment. It is impossible to be grateful and unhappy at the same time. Anything that helps me become a-better-version-of-myself makes me happy, even if it is difficult or painful. Happiness is contagious."And he shows us that the way we find true happiness is by pursuing answers to four questions."Who am I?What am I here for? What matters most? What matters least?"He also shares with us that:"It is this fact-that we lie to ourselves-that is of particular importancehere. Humanity's ability to deceive itself knows no limits."Or"Whenever and wherever Christians have taken the idea that holiness is possible seriously, Christianity has thrived. Whenever and wherever the biggest lie in the history of Christianity has prevailed and everyday holiness has been set aside, Christianity has fumbled along clumsily with limited impact or become stagnant.""I don't like alarm clocks. Just the name disturbs me. Who wants to start the day alarmed? But when you check into a hotel, they often ask you if you would like a wakeup call. I like that. We all need a wakeup call from time to time. I needed one last year. Maybe you need one right now. It is just so easy to fall into the mode of sleepwalking through life."I hope that those few quotes will help you appreciate some of the message that is in this wonderful book. Of all the books I have read by Kelly this is the best so far. I highly recommend it.

I am involved in Christian and Catholic apologetics. I write and read a lot. Matthew Kelly's The Biggest Lie in the History of Christianity" was given out to parishioners at the two parishes our family attends. The book is lauded as a great tool of evangelism. I read it. But I found it very shallow and insipid in its thinking. Catholics can do much better than read this if they want to be better prepared to engage the culture, witness for Christ, and better their lives.Consider these few points.(1) The Biggest Lie... unlike most Catholic texts this book has no citations, outside references, footnotes, nor is there a bibliography. Ex. He quotes Keats, but no citation. Only one Scripture is cited: 1 Thes. 4:3. Thus, contrary to what I was told by a priest, there is no clear presentation of the Gospel in this book. But rather a feel-good, nearly post-modern version of the Gospel IS suggested. (See No. 3 below.)(2) In rebutting the historic lies about Christianity, The Biggest Lie... provides few if any facts that can be tracked down and checked out. But Kelly offers plenty of opinion. Ex. "#1 Jesus Didn't Exist" (p 22), Kelly provides not one piece of evidence that Jesus did exist. But he provides 7 claims that Christ didn't, and offers 6 of his own unsubstantiated opinions, demeaning his detractors by calling them "disingenuous" or liars. Matthew, name calling is not evidence.(3) If there's a practical theme to the book it's to create Holy Moments by being kind to others. This is where 1 Thes. 4:3 comes in, "...be holy." Good starting point, but Kelly interprets this, which by other names is a repeat of past secular social fads a.k.a. "random acts of kindness" and "pay it forward" which the secular culture practices to a great extent. Kelly seems to think such Holy Moments are unique to Christians and the world will sit up and take notice. He's wrong. He's also wrong the holiness is arrived at by being kind to others...although being kind is a good thing. Further, he provides no advice on how to use Holy Moments to confront cultural issues like abortion, sexualization, gender politics or the ever-present sex scandal in the Church. He ignores these issues totally. Thus, the book is very shallow.(4) He spends time talking about giving 100% of our lives to Christ, but the thinking here is nothing more than a bottle of bromides. Platitudes with no practical interpretation. EX: If I give my 100% to Christ how do I have anything left for my wife, job, or kids? Now there's a clear answer to that, in that we are Christ in our interaction with our wife, job and kids...but Kelly doesn't say that. He just piles on the adages.(5) On pages 94-95 he writes of the power that ONE individual has to change the world and gives as an example: "Had another thousand or ten thousand joined" the resistance against Hitler "they would have changed the course of history." Think about that logic. ONE person can change Hitler's attack on humanity, but 1,000 or 10,000 more are needed. What happened to the "one person" business? In claiming this over simplification Kelly appears ignorant of the tens of MILLIONS that died to stop Hitler and the Axis powers over a period of years. The logic is over simplified, generalized, and baffling.(6) On pages 109-112 Kelly gives one-line bios to over 30 of the greatest achieving people to grace humanity, from Bill Gates to Grandma Moses, listing the great things they did and the age when they did them...and he points out that these special people were "called of God". Then he follows this up by reminding the reader (in big type) "you and I—are capable of incredible things." Why does he say we don't do such things? He does not remind the reader that he said that the former were called of God, or that they worked hard all their lives and prepared for their great opportunities. No, he says it's because we're busy with the "hustle and bustle of life" as if the famous folks weren't busy with such things. "Or we think we are not among the special people and we are not capable of great things." Duh! Well, most of us are not "called of God" in a special way like Joan of Arc, nor are we as talented or as disciplined as Jack Nicklaus, or driven like Paul McCartney for fame, etc. But never mind that logic. Kelly says, "We are wrong. We are capable of great things." And then by the force of his words he reminds us that Holy Moments (Random Acts of Kindness) are equivalent to the works of Mozart and Michelangelo. One thing for sure, Matthew Kelly will never be lauded for his literature or remembered for his sharp mind.(7) In many places the proofs he provides to support his opinion are simply restatements of his position with more emphatic words. On pages 59-60 he goes on a rant about the need of Christian unity to save the Church and the world. He never gives a tactical or strategic plan for bringing about such unity other than his Holy Moments motif. And then to prove his point he writes: "And hear me when I say this: The future of Christianity around the world depends on this unity. It's no longer just a nice idea...." etc. Thus, in numerous places Kelly's best evidence in support of his opinion is the sight of his own words in print... or the sound of his voice on his videos. What more do we need? There are a number of other logical problems with this book. In short, if Catholics read this they will learn that simply repeating ideological chants ("But Matthew Kelly said...") and paying it forward with random acts of kindness will unite the church, dispense with evil, and change the culture. In the meantime, it would be great if Kelly would steer clear of the bromides and write a practical book on confronting evil.

We all struggle with being the best version of our selves, we allow ourselves to put off what we should be doing, this book give some direction on how to get started.

I started reading this, then put it down when life got busy. I was hit with a minor illness that really had me feeling low. Looking for something to read, I grabbed this book again. I was just coming into the chapter of Transformation and I was hit....this is exactly what I need. I need to open myself to God and find out why I am here, and what is my purpose. I am so ready to make more Holy Moments! I am inspired!

It was an easy read and made you think about really being catholic. I have been catholic all my life but this re-energized me about my faith

Wow, what a simple but necessary solution to the problems of our time which is actually timeless. Learn how live the life you were meant to live as only each of us can do!

Extremely simple concept, don't complicate it. Jesus used a child as the model for us. Quick and easy to read.

MaybeI like the approach but like most Christians that write as an expert the topic of evil being involved is taboo. Jesus recognizes Satan in the desert and several ties when mentioning fires of hell. So you may bring the real Christians around but embedded evil will continue to block as much as they can. Been attending church for 75 plus years and am still trying to identify what a sin is other than those listed in the 10 commandments. Rest are “ God said to ? Or man decided another rule would bring them around. So essentially he is right we are more holy than organized religion would have us believe. I am tired of hearing how sinful we are as the writer 9 implies. Good not great show.

This book isn't for everyone. Those who hate the English won't like it. Those who dislike sarcasm won't like it. Those who have never had problems opening a tin can won't appreciate it. Those who have never been in a boat might not relate to it. Those who don't understand self-deprecation will not grasp this book. Those who despise dogs will not enjoy the book, but such people don't enjoy anything, probably, because dogs are wonderful. Those who have no sense of humor will definitely loathe it.I liked it. British ironic sarcasm is a humor I enjoy immensely. I found myself relating to the 4 main characters (the dog in particular), and the story finds ways to be applicable to more of life's daily adventures than you might think based on its title and plot. If you've ever struggled untangling, or more likely getting tangled up in strands of Christmas lights or an extension cord or a garden hose, there is a chapter in this book that will sound very familiar and you will laugh at the entangled character (in something other than Christmas lights) and at yourself when you remember your own similar follies. This is the genius of this book. It takes funny situations that humans get into every day, and tells them in a way that anyone can relate to whether English or not. There is a lot to laugh at in here, and some history of English towns and islands that the characters float past or visit. The brand of humor is the kind that endures through the years. One caution only - this is an old book, and the author in one sentence used a term that was common in his time period but is offensive today (the "n----r" word). It was not used as an epithet toward an individual, but because we don't use or hear that word today it was jarring to encounter it in one sentence. Certainly not as jarring or frequent as reading Mark Twain, but old novels often reflect the time period in which they appeared. It was the single blemish in an otherwise charming and lightheartedly humorous book. I read this novel between much heavier literary works and it was just the right diversion for me at the time. Kind of like cleansing one's palate between different dishes so they all taste their best. I needed something funny but clever, and this fit that need. If you enjoy British humor, you will enjoy this book and you will find it has some parts that are quite profound in their observations of human emotions and motivations.

This is one of my favorite books. I always start laughing out loud, and by the end, I'm looking up trips to England online. Yes, it's a picaresque travelogue, but it's so funny and charming, that you just want to know these people and be at the pub when they're recounting their adventures. The "voice" of the main character is so clear and funny, that I can imagine it makes a wonderful audio book. The British wit and humor is in full display as is a wonderful sense of place and time.If you like this book and also like sci-fi or speculative fiction, I recommend "To Say Nothing of the Dog" by Connie Willis - she uses the setting of "Three Men in a Boat" in a charming and exciting time travel novel - HIGHLY recommended.

I read this book upon the recommendation of a friend who wanted to know if I thought it had influenced Wodehouse. Personally, I don't know. TMB predated Wodehouse and was immensely popular. I would be surprised if Wodehouse hadn't read it. And a Google search Provides TMB in the list of Wodehouse influences. But, I don't know where that information comes from. So, once again I know no such thing.TMB is top-drawer British humor as is Wodehouse. Both provide an innocent vision of young men about the town. TMB is told in first person narrative by a likeable participant of the adventure. He describes the foibles of himself and his friends in a loving fashion much as is done by Bertie Wooster in the Jeeves and Wooster stories. The comic pacing and slap-stick of both writers is similar.Though, TMB reminds me more of Love Among the Chickens than a J&W. Wooster's misadventures have a depth and invite repeat performance in a way that is not found in either TMB or LAC. Though, admittedly LAC was an early Wodehouse novel and the hero does make many reappearances with S. Featherstone. Still, TMB reminds me more of LAC than a J&W.

Timeless. Absolutely great and rich and simple language; stories and characters which are around and will be around till humankind exists. Delight and must read. I just regret that English is not my native tongue and I can not express fully everything I felt while taking this wonderful river boat from Kingston to Oxford and back with J., George, Harris and Montmorency.Read it, you won't regret it.

The history of this book is fascinating. It was first published in 1889 and it continued to be published each year, somewhat as a puzzle to the author according to the preface. The discussions between the three friends of their common aliments and treatments let’s the reader know how lucky we are to live in modern times. Three Men in a Boat is very humorous and engaging.

While some of this is a travelogue only germane to a 19th century Englishman, the majority is clever satire, hyperbole and dry humor in the best English tradition. As a medical doctor I especially love his personal physician‘s prescription of regular meals, plenty of sleep and “don’t stop your head up with things you don’t understand.“

This book is rather old but is nevertheless funny enough to keep you entertained and interested until you read the last page. If you like British humor this is a very good choice...but be aware that this book is not 'laughing off loud ' funny, if you are looking for something to crack you up you may look somewhere else.

Pretty funny book in a very British way. While I would not recommend it to someone who doesn't like the unique British style humor, it's a nice and quick read for someone who wants an idea of what it's like or already enjoys those blokes across the pond.
