As is the case with the Golden Guides, this little book is an excellent tool. It is not the most in-depth reading, however, but I am one who prefers to plan out heavy research, rather than stumble on it while I'm outside. It prevails where larger, more precise guides fail by being small and light. While you will get more information with other guides, none are as easy to carry on your person as this one. After all, what good is a field guide that weighs you down in the field?

How many fourth grade science reports have been written out of these little books by Zim? Back in the late 1950s (upper pleistocene to most), every kid worth his dinosaurs had a bunch of these nature guides (I lived with "Mammals;" "Reptiles and Amphibians;" "Rocks, Gems and Minerals;" "Fishes;" and "Insects")."Mammals" is a very handy sized book giving a picture of each U.S. (lower 48) mammal with a painting, short description of habits, reproduction, and range. In the back are found the scientific names (I find this handy as I can never remember them when sitting in front of my computer). Excellent for ages six and up.I considered "Mammals" good enough to order one for my six-foot-two son to put in his pack. Don't leave home without it!

A bit out of date but still gives good, accurate informations on the mammals of North America. I have used this book since I was a kid in New York City and when I moved with my family to the Hudson Valley south of Albany and found it most useful. I wanted a hardcover library edition an it's larger print is nice for my older eyes.

I'm currently collecting these Golden Guide nature books for my boy because they are what I grew up with. They are a bit dated but I love the artwork and the information is still quite pertinent. I hope to have the full collection before he turns 4. I just love these books.

Simple, nice illustrations. Would be good for middle schoolers.

Purchased for granddaughter, age 5, and she loves all of these books about nature. I read to her about the things she gets interested in by the pictures.

6 year loves this books. They are a good size for her and with lots of pictures. She uses the book to identify animals in our yard and has surprised me with how well she can find exactly the right animal.

I've read many books on Catholic apologetics from today's authors (i.e. Keating, Hahn, Madrid, Johnson, etc.), and though those authors are excellent in their own regard, I think that this 130 year old classic is the finest for anyone just starting out in Catholic apologetics or just wanting to know what Catholics really believe. It's straight-forward, easy to read, uninsulting, and accurate. And after 130 years, the truths it teaches about Catholicism have not changed. Sure, there are a few brief mentions of historial issues (European governments) and the Mass in Latin which are dated, but the core Catholic beliefs he describes have not changed--not just from 1876 but from the time of the Apostles.Cardinal Gibbons honestly and frankly describes what the Church believes and teaches. His language is very thoughtful, heartfelt, logical, and inclusive of scripture and references. Plus, since Cardinal Gibbons based the content on lectures and discourses with mixed Catholic/Protestant congregations in rural, protestant North Carolina and Virginia, his approach is very accommodating and non-offensive.If you want to know what the Catholic Church REALLY teaches...AND what Catholics REALLY believe, this is the first book you should pick up. I would feel comfortable lending this book to ANYONE who wants to know more about Catholicism or wants to strengthen or defend their Catholic faith.

I'm very excited about an ebook I purchased recently and wanted to spread the word. James Garton has edited and annotated the great apologetical work of James Cardinal Gibbons, The Faith of Our Fathers. In addition to providing useful summaries for every chapter, he has provided a nice biography as an addendum. The formatting is excellent overall (a frequent deficiency in many ebooks, unfortunately). It's hard to improve on this classic, but Garton has done so and impressively. The price is a mere $1.99, a steal for the quality, so he hasn't done this to get rich. I highly recommend this book to Catholic neophytes and sages, and open-minded Protestants who want to learn about what the Catholic Church really believes. Gibbons was a noted evangelist and interrelious pioneer, he spoke in as many or more Protestant churches than he did in Catholic ones in his early years. The book was written with Protestants in mind as well as Catholics.

Must have for any one of the Christian faith that interacts with anyone of the Protestant faiths. Although the book was written in 1876, the common objections that many Protestants have to the Christian faith are addressed in straight forward language that is often easier to understand and remember than official church teachings. It is the reviewers opinion that this is due to Protestant objections having changed very little since 1876 and the Christian Church having changed even less. This book is not a substitute for Holy Scripture; however, the author uses Holy Scripture to support his position. The 1800's language used is for advanced readers by modern standards and the words are used in a more literal meaning than what many modern readers may be used to.

This book quite literally changed my life. I was raised protestant but then decided to brush up on my anti-Catholic apologetics. I began reading the early church fathers (which shocked me to death to say the least) and eventually read this book. By the time I got here to Cardinal Gibbons apologetic work I was open to receive it. Great book, Great writing and beautiful explanations!

This popular 19th century work is a charming and persuasive defense of Catholicism by the Archbishop of Baltimore. Written in the effusive style of the era for the average literate person with some education, Archbishop Gibbons, for the most part, does not resort to citations of the Church Fathers, but rests his case on the Bible, history, logic and common sense. In doing so, I believe that he wrote the best work of apologetics ever produced by the American Church. As expected from a 130 year old book, some of his concerns, as well as some of the Catholic practices he felt the need to defend, are out-of-date. Seeing the overwhelmingly wonderful reviews for this book, I had no reason to believe I would be disappointed.I was wrong. I want to be sure to say that the family has my full empathy. I know that what they have all gone through, and continue to go through, is nothing I take lightly. That said, the book was an account. I found myself cheering everyone on, of course....but not liking any of them. I appreciated the author's honesty throughout, but I can't say that I learned much about traumatic brain injury. I felt the book was a waste of my time and my money. I sincerely wish this family the very, very best, but I do not recommend this book at all. Considering that the wife and author of the book is actually an author by profession, I was deeply disappointed.

As the wife of another TBI survivor, I found myself nodding in understanding, with tears of shared memories sliding down my cheeks, over and over as I read this book.My husband was nearly killed when a large birch tree he was felling on our property 'kicked back' and swatted him like a fly. Like Al, he was air-lifted, close to death, to the nearest hospital trauma unit ... where I experienced much the same minute by minute, day by day nightmare Cathy describes so well.The first hours, wondering if your husband will live or die ... days that feel like weeks, weeks that feel like months. And then reality hits ... rehab is a battle not only for the TBI survivor, struggling to swallow, speak or sit up, but for the caregiver as they fight equally hard for every benefit, every extra day of covered services ... along with the constant trauma and stress of wondering what the future will bring.They call a severe TBI a 'life-altering event' for good reason. it forever alters the life of not only the survivor but of their main caregivers as well. This is a well written book, full of the realities of life with a TBI survivor, without exaggeration.

I hated this book for several reasons, one the author never uses person-first language, she often describes her husband as a TBI guy. Two she is always describing her husband as a child and never sees him as a man with an injury. Three her depression and self-loathing is evident and annoying, it screams that she needs therapy to better cope with her new role as a mother, wife, and caregiver. Four, the author's elitism is evident when she feels entitled to certain health care services in her world. Most of the book is 160 pages of her whining and selfishness, it's only within the first 20 pages and the last 50 pages where you get a better idea of her husband's recovery and perspective. Not recommended for someone who has become a caregiver for a loved one with an injury or TBI.

Cathy Crimmins holds back little in her blow-by-blow account of her husband's bizarre boating accident that left him forever struggling with a brain injury. I would highly recommend this book to any of you close to someone suffering with a TBI. Not only is Crimmins’ story heartfelt and relatable, but it’s also informative and enlightening. A must-read for the TBI community.

This was one of four books that I had to read for an Intro to Communications Disorders class that I took last semester. I was pleasantly surprised what a good read it was. After reading this book I checked into my insurance to see how much coverage I would have for accidents like this one. It also made me think about how fragile life is and how your life can turn on a dime. The brain is complex and vulnerable to trauma both externally and internally. The book also helped me to communicate with my husband about these kinds of accidents. If your language center gets damaged then you can't communicate. I told him that if that happened to either one of us then one really helpful piece of advice is to find a book such as this to see whats going on in the injured person's head. I really appreciate that people take the time to write about their experiences even very traumatic ones such as this.

My wife suffered a traumatic brain injury a year and a half ago as a result of a ruptured aneurysm and subsequent brain surgery to repair it. This book was recommended to me while she was in rehab. This book is so candid about the effects of TBI on the patient, the spouse, the family. I could never write this book because my experience was too painful. I want to both remember and forget at the same time. This book told me I was not alone in what I was experiencing. Many times in this book I thought to myself "Yes, I know that. I have been there too." This is a must read for anyone who has had a loved one suffer TBI. Please know you are not alone.

I picked this book to do a project for my Neuroanatomy graduate level class. I am studying Speech Language Pathology. I loved this book because it was honest, realistic, and often humorous. Anybody getting into a profession with this population needs to read this-put yourself in the perpsecitve of your patients and their families, and to be aware of the realistic outcomes and struggle (day to day) for TBI patients.

Well written and captivating. Having worked with patients with Traumatic Brain Injury for many years, the author captured the depth of emotions the family encounters when a loved one goes through the TBI process. The author also provided valuable information on the recovery and rehabilitation of patients with TBI.

Elijah Wald, the author, musician, and globetrotter who interviewed these many musicians, provides us with much more than what appears in album press releases or liner notes. His insightful commentaries within each profile, in addition to the regional introductions, are excellent and give the reader a greater understanding of what is regarded as world music and how such musicians balance their traditions and roots with modern audience expectations and desires. Some 65 artists from around the planet are profiled. Even the United States is included, as Hawai'ian and Native American indigenous musicians certainly meet the criteria. Selection is, of course, a personal and pragmatic decision, but I find myself in large agreement and would have included nearly all the representatives. The quality of each section varies with the artist, owing to their own analyses and, I assume, familiarity with English, but even the popular, well-interviewed musicians offer new observations about their art and industry. This, therefore, is a fine book (think gift!) for the world music aficionado and ethnomusicologist. This grand survey will also enrich the curious listener who desires to learn about different world musics and musicians.
