Semi-thriller starring a divorced mother setting out to begin afresh in a new environment with her young daughter. Unfortunately, things go awry when her daughter, Autumn, is bullied in her new school. Laura (the protagonist) makes a very, very bad choice early on in the novel when dealing with Autumn's bully, and finds herself in the crosshairs of her new town's ire. To make matters worse, someone has singled her and Autumn out for a vicious vendetta, somehow cancelling her credit cards, vandalising her property (and her client's!), and still, Autumn is bullied relentlessly.What makes this tale of woe less than mesmerising is Laura's lack of focus in assisting her daughter (insisting she still attend the school where Autumn is the victim of bullying so bad, that in the U.S., the perpetrators would be serving jail time), and Laura's shrill attacks on her perceived perpetrator when recounting events to the police. She comes across as unlikable even to the reader, and these events are designed to instill empathy in anyone tagging along with her. There doesn't seem to be a POINT in much of her avoidance; she seems unable to deal with the situation thrust upon her, but also unable to ask for assistance from anyone able to help her. She comes across as rather weak, and yet not as unnerved by her life spinning out of control as most people would be.The book is divided into sections narrated by both Autumn and Laura. Each seem a bit too unemotional to be believable; conventional wisdom would seem to be that this situation would merit a larger emotional trauma. The writing wasn't terrible. Perhaps if there is a next novel, the author will try to make characters a bit more believable.
This story was really quiet ridiculous!!! Every time the mother was asked to explain why she pushed a boy 2 grades higher than her daughter, she failed to mention that she caught the boy and 6 even bigger-&-older boys, were actively bullying the girl, to include surrounding her, grabbing her schoolbag, and tearing up all of her paintings. Then he got in Mom's face so she pushed him away, as I would have done. The only issue with the town was that he slipped and fell when she pushed him, so wouldn't you think the circumstances were important?? After 4 or 5 chances to explain, including to the boy's dad, I got fed up and ejected the MP3CD!!!
Listen to the book while on a long road trip. Kept me very entertained and guessing what was going to happen next. Some parts were a little slow but ultimately the ending was a little bit of a surprise. The English accent of the reader narrator was difficult to follow at times
The book could have been good, however the narrator is the worst. I fought to stay awake listening to the MP3, believe me it was a fight, because I listen while I drive.Someone that reads a book aloud, should be able to change voices somewhat as the different characters speak.
This book carries an excellent message of what a devastating effect a bully can have on your child. I was disappointed in the timid main character. I tend to feel English writers portray English women as weak and introverted. Something foreign to many of us Americans; however, I have to applaud the Mother stepping out of her comfort zone to protect her child.
This story got off to a slow start and I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy it but after a few chapters it started to get interesting and I looked forward to what would happen next. It's about bullying, the effects it has on everybody, how people deal with it in different ways and how it can easily escalate into serious situations. It was good and I will look forward to another book by this author.
I would describe this novel as "just Ok". The subject matter was timely in terms of the bullying by children in school, but I found the the involvement of the father somewhat implausible because there was so little developed in the character and his situation. There should have been more development in the area of the bully's family relationships and situation.
Was ok, wasn't really a thriller. Was able to figure it out almost immediately. A lot of detail in the beginning, confusion in the middle and the end felt like the writer was in a hurry to finish it up. Left me disappoionted.
