This book is gorgeous to look at, many great photos of drums...but the accompanying text is riddled with inaccuracies, some of which are quite inexcusable. For example...One of Carmine Appice's pictured sets is a Leopard finish Slingerland set. The text says that he used them from 1970 to 1972. At that point in time Carmine was one of Ludwig's highest profile endorsers, unlikely to be playing drums from their main rival...but even more importantly, the set in question has Conway, Arkansas badges (there is even a close up picture of one of the badges and the caption mentions that these drums were built there). Slingerland drums were not made in Conway until the late 1990s. So either Carmine has a time machine or the author really didn't do much investigation.Even worse...Buddy Rich. The text tells us we are looking at Buddy's last Slingerland endorser set (which would have been from roughly 1977, last I knew this set was on display in one of Steve Maxwell's drum stores) but the lavishly photographed drum set shown below (and the following two page spread) is not a Slingerland set (even one from Conway) but an inexpensive set from about a decade ago, imported by the short lived Buddy Rich Drum Company. Drums that didn't even exist until 20 years after Buddy's death nor would have been up to his standards. Here again there is even a close up of the badge, which does not say "Slingerland" anywhere on it but does clearly say "made in Taiwan"...seriously? did the author not look at the pictures prior to publication or does he know so little about drums and/or Buddy that he missed that? These sets had nothing to do with Buddy beyond licensing his name and I recall a Sam Ash store that had a set in stock for almost a year, even at $999.00 no one would buy them. Imagine a book on baseball and you turn to a page where the text tells you that you are looking at the bat that Babe Ruth hit his 714th home run with, but pictured on the page is a plastic whiffle ball bat...or a book on racing that informs you that a go-cart pictured on a page was used by Mario Andretti to win the 1969 Indy 500. This is a drum world equivalent to that sort of error.Keith Moon, they have pictures of a Pictures of Lily tribute set from a few years ago rather than photos of Moon's actual Pictures of Lily set (which they mention is in a museum in London...well then photograph those, not some copy that as made decades after his death).Art Blakey's 60's Round Badge set in the photos is a five piece "Rock and Roll" model set from the 1970's (stop sign badges). Maybe they did belong to Art at some point but that is hardly the sort of set-up you associate with him.I get the impression that the author doesn't know much about vintage drums. Certainly he dropped the ball here as far as fact checking. These were just some of the things that jumped out at me on the first brief perusal of the book. After that I'm not sure I'd trust anything I read in this book. I imagine most of it is probably more or less accurate, but still. It is well laid out and, as I mentioned, the photography is first rate, even if the wrong drums are being photographed. Nice to look at, the same book, without the text, would probably be preferable since it wouldn't spread misinformation about vintage drums. Seek out a copy of Jon Cohan's Star Sets if you want to know accurate information about the drums your drum heroes actually played.I had high hopes for this volume and pre-ordered it back in May. I was thrilled to see it had finally shipped, only to be disappointed almost as soon as I started looking at it. I understand that no book is going to be 100% accurate but these mistakes represent pretty shoddy work in my opinion. It will go on the shelf with my other drum books but won't be the book I pull out to look something (anything) up in.
This is a great photo collection of drum kits over the years, from The Tonight Show's Ed Shaughnessy to Kiss's Eric Singer. It's far from complete, though. Stewart Copeland, who had as signature a kit as any drummer ever, is nowhere to be found, and Neil Peart has one kit showcased where many drummers have multiple, and in his case it's because a replica kit was available to photograph. So the book seems to rely on available images and/or willing participants. The summaries on the drummers careers is sometimes questionable and in at least one case even contradictory, but much like Playboy, that's not really why you showed up to the party. This is a treasure trove of information and eye candy on the kits themselves that will fascinate any drummer and make you want to spend thousands filling your basement with replica sets.
If you love drums, or even music in general, you will love this book. It starts with a clear and concise introduction to drum kits, then takes off like a rocket through the history of the most famous kits ever created. Young drummers in particular should find the book inspiring and informative as most legends in the genres of rock and jazz are included. The great photographs are just the icing on the cake.
Good book, but I was hoping for more. It’s filled with great pictures and tidbits sbout the artists, but I was hoping for more in depth information about the individual kits. I read the entire book and looked at every photo. Now if will just look cool on my book shelf for the rest of whatever.
Overall many mistakes as stated in previous reviews. Many kits and many drummers were and strangely omitted.
My husband loved it. Going through the pages and remembering all the drummers he looked up to
Two stars only because the photos are really nice. Why on earth would you go to the trouble of publishing a book like this and not double and triple check the content? This thing is riddled with ridiculous errors that any drummer would have spotted in a second. I won't bother listing the mistakes since another reviewer has already gone to the trouble. If this thing goes into a second edition the author would be well advised to do some homework and get the facts right.Very disappointing.
We drummers like to look at drums as much as play them. This book is a gem. A must have for any passionate drummer. The author and photographer are to be commended for what must have been a lot of hard work. And a lot of leg work. The drum kits are all professionally photographed in a studio. All of the concert photos are beautifully reproduced except for one of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. There is one obviously backwards photo and one unnecessarily repeated photo. Other than that, it's a masterpiece!
