Good book for learning Java, it covers the language in depth with both the visual part of Java and back end Java. I needed this for a college class but it makes a great reference for anyone interested in Java programming.MY RATING SYSTEM:I try to stick with the same criteria and system when reviewing products and here is how it breaks down…FIVE STARS: Great Product, would feel completely confident in recommending to others and consider the product to be a great overall value with no obvious faults.FOUR STARS: Still a very good product, I consider it to be overall a good satisfying purchase and can still recommend it in good faith but there is one small aspect about the product keeping it from a perfect score.THREE STARS: A good product but not a great one, it operates and appears as advertised but more than one aspect of the item is undesirable. This is an item I would use but probably consider an alternative option.TWO STARS: Product is definitely lacking in quality and or the way it operates. Would not recommend it to others and would seek and alternative elsewhere. It maybe just barely does what it is advertised to do but is probably not worth the money and there are many negative factors about it.ONE STAR: No two ways about it, this is a bad product and I would not recommend anybody purchase it.
Mind-boggling amount of typos--towards the end of the book, there were over 50 on one page! Publisher could not have cared less, was absolutely no help at all.
This is a very thorough and readable introduction to Java.I had to buy it for a class, and I was able to get a used copy (in excellent condition) for just fifteen dollars. That's a bargain!Highly recommended for anyone wanting to dive into learning Java.I care about the quality of paper in my books, and this one has those thin, but durable pages. They are ideal. It turns easily, and packs a lot of pages into less physical space.
This book explains stuff in a very understandable way. It's not really complicated, but good enough to cover all the java basics. However, in some parts it still looks confused. Good for those who has a little bit of java experience so that you can get used to tech terms.
Was told to get this as a supplement for my Java classes. Our main text book is Absolute Java. This book has a lot of extra projects to do.Pros:Tons of projectsAnother resource.Expands more on some topics.Cons:Very similar to the Absolute Java textbook.Dry reading.
As someone who knew nothing about programming at all, this book was a requirement for an introduction to programming in java course. Most who chose not to purchase the book, or just did not read it, suffered greatly and many dropped the course before it finished. But if you take the time to read the book, you will learn a lot very quickly and be able to race ahead of the classroom competition. With that said, the book is very well written and layed out. The topics covered in the book completely encompass anything you would expect to learn in a beggining Java course. After having read 2 other pure java books at the beginner/intermediate level, it makes me wish all books were this great quality and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to start learning Java. 5/5
You're probably buying this for a class, right? Otherwise, a used copy of the 4th edition would do just fine I'm sure. This was an excellent textbook. I used it before and after lectures - it wasn't so dry that it was torture to read it and it was helpful enough as a reference that I went back to it. You can supplement your learning with a really easy read - Head First Java. Head First won't give you the comprehensiveness of this book, but it will get you through some of the more complicated concepts with pictures and humor.
I got this book to catch up on old, forgotten programming skills, and it does more than just remind me of what I once knew; it has answered so many questions. Savitch does a wonderful job of explaining everything. The writing is clear and interesting, and the many, many examples are extremely helpful.The one downside is the code for online assistance at the beginning of the book doesn't exist anymore, but this is the 4th edition and only $5 so I'm not too upset
