Seeing the overwhelmingly wonderful reviews for this book, I had no reason to believe I would be disappointed.I was wrong. I want to be sure to say that the family has my full empathy. I know that what they have all gone through, and continue to go through, is nothing I take lightly. That said, the book was an account. I found myself cheering everyone on, of course....but not liking any of them. I appreciated the author's honesty throughout, but I can't say that I learned much about traumatic brain injury. I felt the book was a waste of my time and my money. I sincerely wish this family the very, very best, but I do not recommend this book at all. Considering that the wife and author of the book is actually an author by profession, I was deeply disappointed.

As the wife of another TBI survivor, I found myself nodding in understanding, with tears of shared memories sliding down my cheeks, over and over as I read this book.My husband was nearly killed when a large birch tree he was felling on our property 'kicked back' and swatted him like a fly. Like Al, he was air-lifted, close to death, to the nearest hospital trauma unit ... where I experienced much the same minute by minute, day by day nightmare Cathy describes so well.The first hours, wondering if your husband will live or die ... days that feel like weeks, weeks that feel like months. And then reality hits ... rehab is a battle not only for the TBI survivor, struggling to swallow, speak or sit up, but for the caregiver as they fight equally hard for every benefit, every extra day of covered services ... along with the constant trauma and stress of wondering what the future will bring.They call a severe TBI a 'life-altering event' for good reason. it forever alters the life of not only the survivor but of their main caregivers as well. This is a well written book, full of the realities of life with a TBI survivor, without exaggeration.

I hated this book for several reasons, one the author never uses person-first language, she often describes her husband as a TBI guy. Two she is always describing her husband as a child and never sees him as a man with an injury. Three her depression and self-loathing is evident and annoying, it screams that she needs therapy to better cope with her new role as a mother, wife, and caregiver. Four, the author's elitism is evident when she feels entitled to certain health care services in her world. Most of the book is 160 pages of her whining and selfishness, it's only within the first 20 pages and the last 50 pages where you get a better idea of her husband's recovery and perspective. Not recommended for someone who has become a caregiver for a loved one with an injury or TBI.

Cathy Crimmins holds back little in her blow-by-blow account of her husband's bizarre boating accident that left him forever struggling with a brain injury. I would highly recommend this book to any of you close to someone suffering with a TBI. Not only is Crimmins’ story heartfelt and relatable, but it’s also informative and enlightening. A must-read for the TBI community.

This was one of four books that I had to read for an Intro to Communications Disorders class that I took last semester. I was pleasantly surprised what a good read it was. After reading this book I checked into my insurance to see how much coverage I would have for accidents like this one. It also made me think about how fragile life is and how your life can turn on a dime. The brain is complex and vulnerable to trauma both externally and internally. The book also helped me to communicate with my husband about these kinds of accidents. If your language center gets damaged then you can't communicate. I told him that if that happened to either one of us then one really helpful piece of advice is to find a book such as this to see whats going on in the injured person's head. I really appreciate that people take the time to write about their experiences even very traumatic ones such as this.

My wife suffered a traumatic brain injury a year and a half ago as a result of a ruptured aneurysm and subsequent brain surgery to repair it. This book was recommended to me while she was in rehab. This book is so candid about the effects of TBI on the patient, the spouse, the family. I could never write this book because my experience was too painful. I want to both remember and forget at the same time. This book told me I was not alone in what I was experiencing. Many times in this book I thought to myself "Yes, I know that. I have been there too." This is a must read for anyone who has had a loved one suffer TBI. Please know you are not alone.

I picked this book to do a project for my Neuroanatomy graduate level class. I am studying Speech Language Pathology. I loved this book because it was honest, realistic, and often humorous. Anybody getting into a profession with this population needs to read this-put yourself in the perpsecitve of your patients and their families, and to be aware of the realistic outcomes and struggle (day to day) for TBI patients.

Well written and captivating. Having worked with patients with Traumatic Brain Injury for many years, the author captured the depth of emotions the family encounters when a loved one goes through the TBI process. The author also provided valuable information on the recovery and rehabilitation of patients with TBI.

His insightful commentaries within each profile, in addition to the regional introductions, are excellent and give the reader a greater understanding of what is regarded as world music and how such musicians balance their traditions and roots with modern audience expectations and desires. Some 65 artists from around the planet are profiled. Even the United States is included, as Hawai'ian and Native American indigenous musicians certainly meet the criteria. Selection is, of course, a personal and pragmatic decision, but I find myself in large agreement and would have included nearly all the representatives. The quality of each section varies with the artist, owing to their own analyses and, I assume, familiarity with English, but even the popular, well-interviewed musicians offer new observations about their art and industry. This, therefore, is a fine book (think gift!) for the world music aficionado and ethnomusicologist. This grand survey will also enrich the curious listener who desires to learn about different world musics and musicians.

I remember very well the first time I read "To Lead is To Serve." I was on my way to a meeting that Shar McBee was going to keynote. I wanted to introduce myself to her philosophy of volunteerism prior to the meeting. Since then, I've re-read the book several times, and each time I get more and more out of it. The writing is fresh but timeless, new and invigorating. It's book that's so good you can tune everything else out when you're reading it. "To Lead is To Serve" is also a quick, easy read - you can read it in just a couple of hours.The principles that Ms. McBee espouses in "To Lead is To Serve" can absolutely turn an organization - any organization, be it for-profit or a non-profit, around. Unlike many who write about non-profits, the author skillfully differentiates between management and leadership. The heart of the book is the recruitment and retention of volunteers. Membership-based organizations will find great benefit in using Ms. McBee's ideas to not only recruit members, but to also retain those members. In To Lead is To Serve, Shar McBee talks about the challenges and skills necessary to manage and maintain a volunteer group. I would even go further than that. Since most employees can choose to quit and move on at any time, I feel these same skills are important for ANY people you work with - whether they are paid or not. Every person wants to feel important, wants to feel appreciated. What Shar lists here can work in any type of group situation.Shar talks about how maintaining a healthy view of the situation is critical. An example she gives is of finding a group of drowning people. You would not sit down and start discussing with them the basics of swimming. Instead, you would throw them a life raft. If people have an immediate need, you meet it. Only when they are ready to learn can you start providing instruction. Before the workers can accomplish anything, basic needs have to be met.An important message Shar reiterates several times is based on iChing - "to rule truly is to serve". You cannot go around thinking "what can I get out of my volunteers / workers". Rather, you need to think about "the workers need something - what is it? How can I help?" In another example she talks about how you need to meet people where they are, and help them from there. If someone doesn't know a certain skill, it does no good to berate them for the lack or to complain about it. Instead, realize that starting point, teach them the skill, and go from there.A key reason most volunteers stay is that they get continuous and immediate recognition and appreciation. They like to know that what they are doing is being seen. Everybody likes to be included and welcomed.Shar offers a variety of helpful tips. If you get discouraged, contact five people and express your gratitude for specific things they've done to help you in the past. It reminds you of the blessings you have and the opportunity you have to help out others.She also points out that people work best when we show strength first, sweetness later. We need them to respect us first. If you show sweetness first, human nature is for them to walk all over you and see that as a sign of weakness.Shar explains that the number one reason volunteers quit is they have hurt feelings. The Chinese say that patience is putting breaks on strength. This means you have to hold up, just listen, let them talk. Sympathize. Only then can you start to offer solutions that they will appreciate.I do have a comment. In one area Shar says, if you're in an accident, to always jump out of the car and say "Gee, I'm sorry" to diffuse the situation. You should NEVER do that. Countless research has shown that this can easily lead to a lawsuit. You should never express guilt. You should express NEUTRAL concern, such as "are you all right" or "Neither of us needed this today". You should never make any statement that YOU are the one at fault.Finally, Shar warns that while workers support modest, kind and humble leaders, they delight in taking down pretentious and uppity leaders. It is completely up to you which category you fall into.A great book for any leader of any type!

I've used it twice now. I pondered long and hard before I did. It was at a time that I needed justice swiftly. I had a roommate that would not leave, that was destroying our house. I evoked a certain demon to help and boy did it. Remember that magick works in all directions in time. They had visions of a demon before I did the ritual. Hehe. They moved out two weeks later.Second time was a minor curse on someone who stole a substantial sum from me then left the state. He's not doing well at all from what I've heard through the grapevine. I could've used the master curse provided in the book, but decided against it, because money is fluid and will return to me.Long story short. This works well when you have actually been wronged and need justice. I used to, before initiation believe that dark magick was to be avoided, but it has been pleasurable to me and cathartic. At first I thought it was a fluke or coincidence, but now I see I have success over and over again. I can reference this book (I use the digital version) as needed and know I can solve problems or address issues with reliable results. Some are afraid of black magick or believe that it will come back to them in a bad way. While there are laws of karma and what we do to effect change can come back to us, we also have to remember that it is our right to correct wrongs, make justice, and protect ourselves; this is where black magick comes into play and is justified.

December 31, 2015: I've had this book since the day of release but wanted to try a ritual before writing the review. I have to say I am very happy with how easy it is to complete the rituals AND obtain such quick results. The sigils are very clear and every ritual is well explained. If you follow everything as written, you WILL obtain a result. It works so be sure you truly want what you desire.Update January 31, 2018: Since the first review I have only used one other ritual and saw my result within two months. I never received any negative backlash and don't expect to. This is very effective magick. As I've stated before.......be sure you truly want the result you desire before completing any rituals in this book.

Contrary to what orthodox religion teaches, the information in this book will undercut every piece of your life long indoctrination, break longheld chains you have been bound by, and allow you to claim your God given rights. This book is definitely not for people whoare still yoked to Christian Teachings. Winterfield gives you a completely different paradigm to empower yourself and (I believe), protectyourself from devious and evil forces. Here is the clincher, the author will show you how to call on and activate evil to combat evil. He stronglyissues disclaimers at the beginning of the book asserting that you accept personal responsibility for everything you learn and what theconsequences are for using evil entities to combat evil against you.This book is not for the weak of heart and nervous Nellies who need someone to hold their hand for them.In the fifth paragraph of the book Gordon asserts, "I do not revel in the Glory of Black Magic or wallow in the powers of darkness. My life is gentle and kind.. this is not a book about the thrill of dabbling with demons and darkness." finally he tells us his purpose when he says, "This book has been written to fulfill a need for results and to provide the opportunity for spiritual development."Every step of the way Gordon advises the lesser evil asking self reflection and personal integrity before you bring down the hammer of spiritual protection. Remember this: the people who are destroying your life have more power than you do, They are using it for their own malicious purposes and care little if nothing of the consequences of their unprovoked attacks.The spiritual dynamics of the Gallery of Magick is very different than what you have been indoctrinated into since birth.This information ought to be used to terminate and end unwarranted attacks against you. This is a TERRIBLE abridgment. Going off the reviews, I thought this would work for my students as an abridgment of the classic for their summer reading, and I honestly thought it might be the same one I used to use when teaching it during the school year from an out of print textbook. I WAS SO WRONG. This abridgment leaves out key things that make the parts it leaves in impossible to understand if you aren't already familiar with the story. I am SO embarrassed that I suggested parents buy this catastrophe of an abridgment. The publishers should be ashamed of the way they have butchered this classic.

Oh, the beauty and the agony tears at me as I think about this stunning story. The characters are vivid and the settings so well written that I was transported to the graveyard alongside young Pip and his convict, fear streaking through me as it was for that small boy torn by a near-impossible decision. And I’m there with Pip and kind-hearted Joe in the forge. I can feel the fire on my skin and taste hot metal on the back of my tongue. In my mind, I hear the crackling of the decades-old crinoline of Miss Havisham’s skirts rustling against the marble floors of the mausoleum she calls home. Amid the stopping of Miss Havisham’s clock, the cool radiance that is Estella vibrates from the pages, bringing her to life.If you haven’t read Great Expectations, I encourage you to do so. Yes, it was first published in 1861, and the syntax is more eloquent than that we’ve become accustomed to, but once this tale grabs hold, you will forget the language and year it was written and be all in with these new friends. The love, the heartbreak and the lessons still hold true today. Some choices, once made, can leave long-reaching scars on the hearts of those we never knew we touched. A good deed can ripple through time to places never imagined. The consequences of our actions must be accounted for, and there will always be outcomes we could never have anticipated.Great Expectations is the real deal! The deliciously-satisfying prose is the whipped cream on the proverbial sundae that is Dickens. The plot and subplots (and sub-subplots) are astounding! The way he can weave this tangled web yet keep the interest of the reader while giving nothing away until the perfect moment … and BAM! He has you, and you sigh with the perfection of it all.You’ve missed a gorgeous piece of literature if you don’t dive into this book.

I avoided reading books by Charles Dickens because I thought the old style of English would be too tough to work through and keep my interest. I was wrong. I waited 64 years before I figured this out. Maybe I needed to wait until this before I could appreciate his work.It is basically a story of a young orphan boy, named Pip, coming of age in the mid- 19th century. It is a life full of characters both good, bad and in between. The main thrust though is how theses characters all affect young Pip's beliefs; fears and... great expectations. As he grows he finds that many are not what he originally thought them to be. However, they are what they are. The story is about how Pip learns to deal with them and life's twist and turns.It is really a good book. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. It is tough to read in a few spots but you can still get the context and keep the story moving along. I highly recommend this book, but you will have to decide if you are old enough to appreciate it. Just don't wait too long...

Some chapters really have nothing to do with the story about Nickolas and his family; the coincidences are really implausible, and sometimes it seems that Dickens can not really figure out what to do. (One bad guy is killed in a duel that has nothing to do with the plot. At least he did not have a piano fall on him.)But for all that, Dickens is one of the world's great story-tellers and you will find yourself wanting to know what is going to happen to Nicholas and his family as they go through some really bad years of their lives. (Spoiler alert: They all live happily ever after.) Also, you will learn a lot about London in the early to middle 19th century. It is entertaining and well worth reading.

This book is a classic for a reason -- Dickens' insight into the human mind and spirit is phenomenal. He is a master writer and psychologist and perhaps spiritual leader. He strips bare the human condition especially how we get stuck in our moments of trauma like Miss Havisham, or stuck in our insecurities like Pip longing for what he knows is emotional poison (Estella) because he imagines her love and attention will elevate him. This book ought to be read and studied.
