I was always looking for a book like this on critical thinking. Your usual critical thinking book is filled with cherry picked good ideas on the topic but never organized in a thinker to thinker way.Here the author presented 10 great critical thinkers in a chronological-ideological fashion. I appreciated that the author chose thinkers from different schools of thought. The presented thinkers approach critical thinking sometimes from completely different angles yet they all arrive to the same conclusion - that our thoughts should be questioned from time to time. The entire book is a celebration of the essence of critical thinking - familiarizing with opposing thoughts and finding something in them we can connect with.
After reading this book, I find myself considering more how these masters of critical thinking throughout history might solve today's problems, and this book gave me a great introduction and reference point to continue learning more about both the history of critical thinking, and it's evolution around the world through time, focusing on ten of the greatest minds to tackle the world's problems, while teaching others to share that same curiosity and responsibility. The most important thing learned is that we can solve any problem with reason, and we just have to be open to asking the right questions.
An excellent summary of critical thinking philosophies and how they implement into aspects of our lives. The author gives a wonderful, multi-faceted approach to discussing critical thinking. An excellent read!
This audiobook lays out a great foundation to use critical thinking for asking the right questions to solve a problem. It covers several methods and applies them to practical applications. The narrator is perfect for conveying a vast amount of information and keeping you engaged is what is being said. I enjoyed this audiobook and have used the information contained within in my every day life. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Great book which focuses on the "heavy hitters" in the world of critical thinkers and philosophy. I liked the each thinker was introduced by a bit of a background and history of them. Further into each chapter is nice explanation of the different methods each one is known for .
This book focuses on well known philosophers like Socrates, Aristotle, Sir Francis Bacon, etc and how their thinking applies to our modern thinking. One of my favorite sections of the book was Descartes and how anyone seeking the truth through critical thinking must question everything even basic things learned as a child because as a child you acquired beliefs and opinions through instinct, sensory data and dogma. This book is put together brilliantly and is one of Albert Rutherford's best works so I'd definitely recommend you pick it up.
This book is well researched, based on the ideas of ancient experts in the critical thinking field. It's a quick read but you may pick it up more than once just to get a quick recap of the techniques and ideas shared. The ideas presented here are sometimes as old as 2500 years old, however, they serve as a good reminder to critical thinking methods that many of us can use even today. I particularly liked the thorough description of the Socratic questioning, the Thomistic Disputation, and James Mill’s teaching methods. Recommended read.
